Stop Rushing Past Tricks! Rookie Mistake #13

  • This one is committed by so many beginners. If you haven't landed your kickflip, or can't land them consistently, there's no point in throwing out varial or Tre flips. Focus on the stage of skating you're at, get comfortable there, and then climb to the next plateau. Rushing ahead will only make it harder.
    Let me know which tricks you’d like to learn in the comments. Thanks for watching.

    I've been enjoying your videos. I appreciate all the advice as an older guy learning how to skate. Right now I'm drilling on Ollie's, I hope to be able to ollie up and down a curb in a few weeks.

    You are really right, skating is something that goes in steps and a lot of concentration and patience and you don't have to rush to have heavy tricks, first you have to have a good base, to then express bigger things in skating. This year I started doing more consistent with your content and the advice you give, and I have improved a lot, one day I will send you the progress I have made, you really inspire me, I identify a lot with what you say.

    Thanks Norman, great advice, I started skating when I was 11 and was at it hard until the age of 16 or so. I always got distracted easily and never focused on my fundamentals. The result is that after 5 years I had a bunch of half-baked flip tricks and almost no real grinds or slides under my belt, skating was never fun and always frustrating, so I quit.
    I started skating seriously again at the age of 27 and as an adult I had a more considered approach, I learned all the basic flip tricks in order of difficulty and did the same with my grinds and slides. The result is that the age of 36, Ive never skated better. Only recently Ive learned how to 5050 round rails, flip my board in a nollie stance and add a few switch tricks to my bag. I wish I had learned this 20 years ago, but Im still progressing so Im just grateful to be enjoying skating at an older age.

    This is awesome. It's nice to hear an established skater talk about skateboarding in the same way I have been talking about it for years. I agree with everything you pointed out in this video.
    I'm 41 and still progressing because I think along the same lines, intellectually.
    Since I live in a small Rural Canadian Town, no one likes it when I mention skateboarding in such terms. Up here Skateboarding is widely seen as just for childs-play. The Canadian North doesn't understand.

    Was doing this with heelflips and ran through 2 pairs of shoes and got a hamstring injury. Had to take a break from relentlessly shooting them out during sessions and now only do them intermittently. I'd still be hyper focusing on them if it weren't for those 2 factors.

      Ouch. Heal up. Remember to rotate between obstacles. A bit of transition, some flatground, a curb, some stairs. That allows you to focus on one trick per obstacle. So, you can lock in on a trick, and move on, while not compromising the level you’re at.

    I been on a related dilemma for a while and it is about how much should I “learn” a flip trick before starting to tackle another one. In particular it is how much good should my kickflip feel, how much kickflip consistency should be, how high or long should I be able to kick flip before tackling let’s say the treflip.
    And the reason it is a dilemma is because I have noticed this effect that from the process of trying a new trick that is a complex version of a trick I have already done (not necessarily learned fully) often times I get important/key insights from the harder trick attempts that applied and help a lot with the related trick I have already done.

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  Рік тому

      I’d say going for Varial flips and backside flips, before Tre flips, will help a lot. Getting that 360° spin is tough at first. Especially if you haven’t learn to get the board rotating 180° with a flip. That’s the exact order myself, and much closer to group of friends learned them. Seems to be a good progression.
      As for consistency, I was landing about 4 of 10 kickflip attempts, when I started to try Varial flips.

    I rolled my ankle about 3 weeks ago as a 32 y/o man, on a heelflip. I was not skating for those 3 weeks. My heelflips were good before, I could do them up a curb almost first t. Now I can't seem to commit even standing still 😫 I hope to get them back better than before

    man I love the clips mixed in with these videos. talk about credentials. and good subject, it get's harder when your horizons broaden and you got so many things you could try. I got a bad habit of thinking of a trick for a spot, going through some of the process of learning it, maybe getting some easier tricks on it, but then moving on before I ever actually got the clip.

    I can 360 pop shuv, kickflip and varial flip but I find tres impossible, they either don't flip or I can't jump with them lol. Everything else makes sense but as soon as I try to 360 flip everything goes out the window. I think I've built up a fear over thousands of attempts launching the board either into my knee or toes.

    well said, ive been working like this for some years now. the amount of focus u choose to direct into what ever ur trying to learn is always going to determine if u will learn how to do it and if being super focused still isnt helping then just put the same time and effort into other tricks or just do the tricks u know. doing the same tricks u got in new ways or something also helps make it easier for u to learn the tricks u didnt get the next time u go back to them. for me rn im learning how to nollie or (switch) flip out of a nose stall and land back in a regular stance (shoulders parallel to ledge). once im ready to combine this with the grind all I will need to do is focus up on the lockin, hold, and the pop+flip out should be super chil.

    I had no idea you're from Nebraska lol. I'm from WY.
    The math analogy is on point. As a an older (35) skater, who's also getting ready to go back to school for Engineering, yes indeed... Holes in your math, you'll fvck off calculus easy and other types off math beyond algebra. That's why I'm starting with college algebra, working my way through calculus series and differential equations. But yeah, same for skating, holes in your skating CAN make skating not as fun later on, which can lead to quitting. You gotta really love skateboarding for real to continue skating and not really be progressing. Ask me how I know lol. I'm one of those guys who's been skating off and on since I was 11 and I still am on basics. Hopefully... My math, and my skating can progress EXPONENTIALLY in the coming years. I want to get good at both by the time I'm 40 lol. Great vid man, agree with everything, and you sound great.

    Dude its always awesome to hear that another skater is into watching/training combat sports. There's so many similarities between training something like muay thai or Jujitsu and learning new tricks. The way you have to move several parts of your body in unison exactly the right way to throw a powerful kick that lands heavy in the exact location you are targeting VS Doing all the parts of a kickflip fiveO. The thought process and the repetition and the never ending journey to "perfection" feels almost the same sometimes. martial arts and skating really do go together. Since you have this platform and you follow the UFC and fight pass, maybe give a re-cap of an event after it happens? I think that'd be sick to see a skater's perspective on how a high-level fight went.

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  Рік тому +2

      Hey Anthony. Thank you for watching and commenting. I share your sentiments. So many parallels between martial arts and skateboarding. The lifelong pursuit of your personal best. Refining movements. Discipline. Always happy to find other combat sports obsessed skaters. Maybe I can throw up a breakdown one day. Prochaska vs. Perreira is looking nice. As is the recently announced Fight Night, in December.
