    I'm 59, and I find it amazing that my generation's music can be appreciated by young people (like this guy) with such obvious enthusiasm and knowledge. It would be as if I, in my youth, had loved and appreciated artists from my parents era, or even earlier...I was certainly aware of it, but never would have found it "cool" or exciting. Which, in turn, makes me so proud to be from a generation that gave the world such enduring and still-interesting and exciting music. Yay us!

    Want to add one more thing : That Im impressed by your knowledge of music, as in playing Lady Jane in Mozart's style. It's great to know different musics. There is beauty to be found just about anywhere you look/Listen. Music is infinite and i never get tired of discovering different styles. It expands me and will do the same for anyone who will step on the path to exploring it. Youve done well yourself and I respect you for it. Thanks.

      But i can compare to Queen, Bowie, John Mellancamp, Rundgren, Yes, ELP. Seen them twice. Disappointed both times. Watch Beetles Anthology. Jagger their in recording session. They never came up with anything on their own until they brought Ronnie Wood in from the Faces. They are nothing but Hype. You've never seen the best so I'm sorry that you don't know what you're talking about. Richards didn't come up with ideas. He took them from the best. Go see 100 different bands in 18 years and comment. Ac DC as an opening act blew them away.
      They are overrated and riding their hype. Richards was always to high to come up with anything on his own. His playing came from other legends.

    there was a top 100 guitarists ever poll a couple years ago, 2 guitarists who were not in the list we're later added. The people were asked to vote and a vast majority kept asking why Keith Richards and Malcolm Young were not on the list... and they kept asking, and eventually the powers that be (guitarworld, rolling stone mag etc) added them. Such is the impact these 2 brilliant guitarists had on the world.

    Thanks, this is excellent. I've been a Stones addict all my life. Saw them 14 times and in 1969, in the Air Force, saw them four times in two days.
    The Ya ya's Tour. twice on Saturday at the University of Illinois and then twice, 125 miles north to Chicage at the Chicago Amphitheater. The last night, I figured out a way to get in front of the center aisle. BAM, it starts...I stand up and feel the pressure. I'm 10 feet from the stage and there's a cordon of police with batons. There was violence at the Democratic Convention recently and Jagger is singing Street Fighting Man. The moral of the story is I ended up pressed hard, dead center, with Mick about 4 feet away. I could see Keith's fillings. I saw the entire concert right there. Mick Taylor on the left and Charlie, the metronome who's perfect for their sound. I don't mind my hearing aids !! I agree my favorite sound was with Brian but Listen to Taylors lead at the back of 'Can't you hear me knockin'. I think they were a better blues band with Taylor and a more original band with Brian.

    I wish people would stop comparing the Stones to the Beatles. They were completely different styles. The Stones were a classic blues band backing a single fantastic vocalist. The Beatles were a harmonizing vocal group with a folk rock backing track.

    • @axiomist1076
      @axiomist1076 5 років тому

      He didnt compare them. He merely mentioned them and said the Beatles had written the first song the Stones did on their first single (other side was "Come On" by Cuck Berry). Eventually the Stones would start writing their own material, being made to do so by their manager, who said theyd never get anywhere if they kept doing covers.Of course, we all know the diff. between the two groups and I feel the Beatles were more musically intellectual as they went on after they came out of the teenage sounds. Anyway, thats my opinion about them. The Stones continued to kick ass as rockers and are still doing it in their late 70s.

      @@erin_22 - I never thought about that. Yeah, they both have the same name but they are significntly different songs. The Sontes tune is an accoustic blues performed on a 12 string guitar. You should hear it. I am sure it's on UA-cam somewhere.

      Brian Jones plays Harmonica on Good Times,bad Times...He was miles ahead of Mick Jagger on Harmonica

    • @Bkellyusa
      @Bkellyusa 5 років тому

      @@mocheck I never compared the two of them on harmonica. Jaggers playing on that instrument is very unique in the sense that he just seems to play it the way he thinks it should go. You can't really hear any particular influence other than his own. He plays like he sings.
      What impresses me most abouut Mick's musical talent is that most of the percussion instruments you hear on their records is Mick. I had always assumed that it was Charlie overdubbing the parts but it's not.

    Great great video, except ... not a word about Ron ? I think there is an 8th reason why the Stones kick ass : they are fantastic, exceptional, on stage. And Ron was born to be Keith's accomplice in front of a 50.000 people audience, and proved it once more during the 2018 tour. He exsudes joy - which Taylor really did not - and his togetherness with Keith is a pleasure to see and hear. Also, Brian was more universal and original, Taylor was more of a virtuoso solist, but with Ron there is less of "A soloist and a rythm guitar" and more of two guitars answering each other. Keith + Ron = an incredible musical engine (plus, of course, Charlie's unique drive). And that, also, kicks ass. All three line-ups are great, but I love this one. And one more thing : dear Mick, get well. GET WELL !

    The Stones were musical geniuses. Their music was far more complex and interesting than most other before or since. Their innovations fusing early rock and roll with rhythm and blues were amazing, as was the diversity of instruments including Brian Jones on the recorder (Ruby Tuesday), marimba, sitar on a few songs, church organ and London Bach Choir (You can't Always Get What You Want} , Jagger on harmonica (Sweet Virginia), strings and brass (She's a Rainbow). The rhythm and blues add incredible richness. Kieth Richards' guitar riffs were amazing. Brilliant lyrics: Sympathy for the Devil, Mother's Little Helper, Paint it Black and others. Credit is also due to the studio musicians and arrangers like Nickey Hopkins, Jack Nitzsche, John Paul Jones, Merry Clayton (Gimme Shelter) and manager/drummer/musician Jimmy Miller. No other group even comes close. Listen to a piano cover of Angie and study the composition. I challenge all of you musicians to equal or exceed the Rolling Stones. We want more music of that quality.
    sition.

    Really good video, Tom. I learned stuff. (I've always played Brown Sugar in standard tuning, and the required fretting makes it tough to get the chords as silky and raunchy as on the original.)
    Now, I want to encourage listeners to pay particular attention to two songs on Sticky Fingers.
    1. Sway: the front end (with vocals) might not draw everyone in, but later, Mick Taylor just climbs to the stratosphere, patiently and forcefully, and pushes every emotional button that rock guitar soloing was invented for. It's shocking!
    2. I Got the Blues: overall a fine white-soul 3/4 ballad with interesting transitions and tasteful instrument layering, and then... that oh-so-brief Billy Preston organ solo. So much emotion in those long notes, stops, and short fiery bursts!

    Also, Keith played that G tuning with only five strings. The low E got in the way.

      actually the licks you played were Taylor..... But Keiths solo was still great. Not as good as what he laid down on the studio version, which is probably the best solo Richards even recorded.

      Guitar Pilgrim if you order the Keith Richards string set from Ernie Ball, you get only 5 strings in the pack,haha

      But I know what to DO with that E sting. I discovered it ALL by accident and didn't know Keith and i used that same tuning for his songs. I've tried to get in touch with him to show him how to use 6 strings. So if anyone can help me, let me know. Thanks.

    Growing up a fan of The Who, Zepp, etc. ... I always thought the Stones were sloppy/lazy. Live performances were half hearted & Jagger would mumble most of the lyrics. Only recently have I come to appreciate the genius. They created some of rocks most iconic and catchy songs.

      @@charlessteenburgen LOL, they are far and away one of the least talented live bands of the era. The Who blew them away in concert. So did Cream. So did Hendrix. And where is the Stones rock opera anyway? Need I go on? I'm not a Stones hater by the remotest of means, they had some good albums, but their live act was musically lacking, as , like you say, IMO.

    I completely agree with you on "Under my Thumb." While I've never been a big fan of the words, I love the layers of melody in the instruments. In addition to the vocal line and the marimba, the bass has its own line, similar to the marimba line. The guitar plays light accents, and I think I hear a fuzz bass.

      Harkleroad, Boston, Tripp, Estrada, and Vliet were better than The Rolling Stones. Among those who agreed with this assertion are McCartney, Mingus, and Miles. Vliet sang like Howling Wolf and the band played blues and rock far better than The Stones. As far as songwriting Vliet amazed the older men of the blues and the the jazz trailblazers as well.

I can barely manage to record myself with my crappy phone camera to show my friends, and here you are producing something fit for network TV. I love the content, have no serious disagreement with anything you said, BUT... I get so sick of the neglect and outright derision heaped upon Mr. Wood. He is a better guitarist than many lauded axemen, and the way he and Mr. Richards play off each other is unique and 2nd to none. Most don't recognize that, as he doesn't play endless searing, soulless arpeggios, a la Satriani, Vai, and the like. As a clearly serious player, I'd hope you'd recognize this. Subscribed, nonetheless!
