The tragedy is that his grandfather may have been born with syphilis and manifested in his teenage years. People still take this horrible disease too lightly.

Oh, I have loved him since I was very young. Lovely man.
As someone from the US, I'm really enjoying viewing segments from the British version of this TV show. However, I really wish that the segments were presented in the right sequence on UA-cam, and that there was no skipping around from one celebrity to the next. The stories are difficult to follow otherwise, and I find this disconcerting.
Very sorry to hear about your Grandfather Mr. Davis. Also to know that syphilis can remain dormant for years. That is truly scary.

Just found out my great-grandfather, who came from Wales, died of the same thing. General paralysis from syphilis.
Becoming paralyzed and unable to speak, sounds like it could also be alzheimers.
is it possible his exposure to the chemicals and the stress (both mental and physical) caused a relapse of his syphilis? It would seem he had more extenuating circumstances against him than for him. If he hadn't been exposed to the stress, he may not have had the relapse but again; extenuating circumstances. His diet was probably rationed and depending on how rationed it was, he might have had to eat horse meat in which case his immune system could have suffered and opened him up for all kinds of trouble. It would be easy enough to say that many factors killed him but likely as not, he was more of a war casualty than just someone who suffered from tertiary syphilis.
I heard 'general paralysis' and mental hospital and knew. Syphilis is/was a nasty illness.
