slyvia brown told amanda berry's parents 10-11 years ago on the montell williams show she was dead. she was found alive in ariel castros house in clevend last year. she and 2 other girls where trapped there for 10 years. if slyvia brown was a real physic, then she should have known where amanda berry was. on the same show she told another couple their son was buried between 2 jagged rocks. he was found four years later living with his kidnapper. yet people still think she is a real physic.
This video should be a Public Service Announcement. The shysters who conned my mum out of hundreds of pounds by exploiting her grief after my dad died should be locked up. I really appreciate Steve's passion in this one. Also, I've just discovered this "5 stupid things" series. I've got some binge watching to do.
I'm willing to accept that some of the small-time psychics might sincerely believe they have powers. The lady who runs the palm reading business at the strip mall. But the big guys, the John Edwards and James van Praaghs, have got to know they're ripping people off.
No way, I went to psychic when my dad died and he told me my dad had said he left something for me under the couch. I checked under the couch and found a dust bunny, it was INCREDIBLE. I still have that dust bunny on my shelf.
People who believe in psychics and read that "for entertainment only" disclaimer just think the psychic was bullied into putting up the disclaimer anyway.
I agree totally. Why is it so many psychic and paranormal shows take either an unabashedly pro-psychic position, or a bullshit "balanced" position, where they won't fully endorse it but they stop short of debunking it? Because there's way more money in feeding people's fantasies than in telling people the truth. Other than Mythbusters, there's not a show on the air devoted to disproving this bullshit, and there are multiple psychic/ghost shows on.
I studied being a "psychic" for a while, got pretty good at the readings. It's not that hard to be a psychic, you just have to know how to make people think you're right when you are not. But if you have a conscience, it's impossible to get money for it.
That's some righteous anger, Steve. The grief stricken are these assholes' bread and butter. Years ago, when my mother died, I (yes, even I) would have given anything to talk to her one more time. It took me months to finally beat those stupid desires out of my head. Grief is a powerful emotion and the most rational among us are not immune to it's traps.
Hey Steve, working above and beyond, hope you get well soon. Great vid, and more arguments against the "it does no harm" defense of all manner of quackery and con games.
....... Well I'm an idiot. I'm multitasking and thought the video title was "Five stupid things about physics". Was wondering what could possibly be stupid about physics lol.
I found a few episodes of a program called Most Haunted that I used to watch when I was younger, I bought it hook line and sinker back then. Watching the program nowadays I see that it is a bunch of easily impressed people freaking themselves out in the dark. Something I found out recently was that the spiritual medium Derek Acorah was supposedly possessed by a spirit who was entirely fictional (an invention of one of the production team) and who's name was an anagram of 'Derek Faker".
I used to work at a bank in a shopping mall. The bank, at one point, sponsored a series of jazz concerts in the mall. At the same time as the first concert, the mall was hosting a psychic fair and the psychics was all set up around where the band was to pay. My manager came in and said that the psychics were upset because their customers could not hear their readings because of the music. I told my manager "They should have foreseen this"
I knew a middle-aged woman who claimed to be a medium. But, she looked more like an extra-large! Yeah! I should talk, because I'm also fat. But I think it's OK for me to make fat jokes, since I'm fat myself.
I used to watch episodes of John Edward's show with my sister for kicks, and there is one thing that stuck in both of our minds ever since. After picking the "right" person in the audience, he was trying to determine what relation had died and said, "I'm getting someone... hmm... someone male.... cousin, nephew, brother, friend?" Some serious specifics coming through that time. That was hilarious. And infuriating because the audience member was amazed....
A friend of mine called up a psychic hotline he saw on a billboard for a laugh, and the first thing the "psychic" asked him was "Where did you get this number?!", and well....you can probably see where it went from there.
And whether they honestly believe or not, that false belief should not be tolerated. Why should a person who sincerely believes he can talk to dead people be allowed to sell that service to people when he can't actually talk to dead people?
Derren Brown is excellent at cold reading and he did this thing where he "wrote a letter" to individuals and they were asked if the letter was the same to everyone - and everyone who read them believed they were personal to them. The same letter worked on people from America, Spain, China and Africa. I like that the Witchcraft Act 1734 chanced the idea from believing in witchcraft to committing fraud.
It's logical to deduce that nobody is a psychic until I see evidence that anyone is a psychic. I'm not close-minded on the issue. I'm open to being persuaded. In fact, at one point in my life I did accept the existence of psychic phenomenon. Then I was persuaded that it was bullshit.
Randi was right. 40 years ago, early in a radio career, I was doing 7-Midnight on a local station, and one of my duties was to be the call screener for our talk show host. One of his favorite guests was a psychic who was fairly well known at the time, though I forget his name. This guy was one of those whose predictions for the coming year appeared in the National Enquirer, so obviously, he had serious credibility (!). Anyway, it was ridiculously obvious how he was operating. Psychics know that virtually every question will be about money, love, or health, and have generic answers ready. They listen for verbal "tells" from the caller or audience member so they can make the answers seem more personally specific.
I can't account for the exact programs you have seen, but I think there are a few reasons that something like this. 1. Psychics are good cold readers. They know people and can deduce a lot from a little information. "I see a car and a little used road". 2. People tend to remember the hits. Police give the psychic some info, she builds on that, later the officer remembers the psychic as giving all the info to him. 3. Editing.
Everybody is saying that. Shit, maybe I SHOULD do Five Stupid Things About Physics. It's about time the law of conservation of angular momentum got taken down a peg.
Nope, no psychics, only empaths. But empath is a sensory thing more than it is a magic ability. There are those few people who will try to analyze what they see (I.E. body language to gauge personality, looking at their eyes to see if you can find hints of a strong laugher, etc. Basic body reading.) and what they feel through their empathic personality. Then by getting an idea of who that person is, they can in essence predict the likely paths they may go down. Trust me, you'll almost never find one of those people. Too rare when being psychic is too easy.
Yeah. That's something I and a lot of other people have noticed, too. Why don't dead people ever have anything of the remotest substance to say? And why are they always so reassuring?
There's a similar interesting tale about one of Derek Acorah's claimed "spirit guides", an Ethopian named Masumai who, Derek tells people, prefers to be referred to as "Sam". Masumai spelled backwards is "I am u, Sam".
A question for fellow skeptics....Are you able to enjoy movies and TV shows about paranormal phenomena? I sure can, as long as it is a fictional media and not a reality show.
I would love to stick around and spill over the seemingly-endless list of things wrong with that question, but I have to work in about 5 and a half hours, so I don't have time.
I've seen a few programs on these psychics who give information to police investigators - mostly I believe giving their services free- and I have to say there are some pretty compelling examples of them helping to solve crimes, in ways that seem to me difficult to explain. The police themselves usual start by being sceptical but by the end are usually more open to the idea. I would recommend watching a few just to get another perspective on it.
" I hate, for example, how the "syfy" channel has become the paranormal channel. . .don't even start me on the history channel." There are still some good shows on the History Channel. Universe jumps to my mind. But you are right that in general the History Channel ignores history.
If she ever finds a genuine psychic, maybe she can talk that person into splitting the million bucks from the Randi Foundation with her. Like a finder's fee or something.
There are talented Psychics out there, but they don't usually advertise much as they don't have too. Also, I have never had a legitimate practitioner ask me a bunch of questions! They ask what kind of reading you would like and go on to tell you the very specific information they have and then you are allowed to ask questions. Thousands of dollars??? Most psychics that are legitimate (not the gypsy ladies in the bad part of town) charge about $80-$120 per hour, and 30 min readings are common. Most people want to know about Business or Romance, not Spirits. Many of them have been tested and proven legitimate...every time someone wants to claim the prize from James Randy there is a BS reason why they are turned down.
Stop lying about what Psychic's do! You don't have any personal experience... Just shit you hear and repeat. If you tried to get a reading you would fail because you do not have the intelligence to pick a good one.
"The only significant difference between a psychic and a mugger is that the mugger uses a gun." and a psychic uses their crystal ball to steal your money, just to finish your sentence for you buddy. great vids man!
A psychic recently told me that I had someone in my family whose name began with M. She was right--my Aunt Marilyn. There is no way she could have known that.
(Google: Science-Based Medicine Chiropractic - complete overview) Most if it is bunk but I still go for my migraines because it seems to work quite well. "Some physiatrists, sports medicine doctors, and osteopaths legitimately employ manipulative therapy to relieve muscle strain, mobilize joints, and improve function. Chiropractors do this as well."
I won't argue the possibility but I don't fully believe it's placebo. These were muscle issues. My sister also walked pigeon toed so that her feet faced inwards. That was also fixed. (Science-Based Medicine Chiropractic - complete overview, part 1) "Some physiatrists, sports medicine doctors, and osteopaths legitimately employ manipulative therapy to relieve muscle strain, mobilize joints, and improve function. Chiropractors do this as well." Not completely bogus but deserves scrutiny
A. What type of magician esoteric or just a entertainer. B. Some of the random thoughts thst pop into my head that correlate with a later event may be considered psychic but i have no intent to contact your dead loved one for you.
In at least 3 cases, no. I did attempt to record my dreams in university, in case something like this happened. I gave up when nothing did after several months, but about a year later, I experienced something I had recorded, exactly as I had written it. The other 2 dreams also happened within a few weeks of that event, although in all 3 cases, I was alone, without any witnesses. (Except the cat, but they're not that reliable.) Given the evidence, I probably should keep a dream diary, but meh!
My favorite bullshit is the pet psychic that first asks the owner what the pet's name is. If the pet know NOTHING else, it knows its own name. Ask him.
My problem remembering dreams comes mainly from the fact that I tend to try and get back to sleep. I *really* don't like getting up most of the time....
Every notice they never tell anyone something like "Your mother is on the other side and has a message for you....she says you were a rotten kid and an even more rotten adult"
Steve, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but James Randy has ended that $million reward for genuine supernatural abilities. It was never claimed in all the years it was running. Not even close.
I agree and I know there are more and more poeple in the world who have a more advanced awareness as humanity evolves we are using more of our brains. I'm sure the hard facts will come out when society is ready and can handle it. Because there are hard facts they just aren't open to the public. We lose our dreams 10 mins after waking but if you have that ability every one of your dreams could be worth atleast taking note..
Magicians are excellent entertainers and showmen - but they aren't liars. A professional magician will never claim to have actual powers. Psychics feed on ignorance, magicians are skilled artists.
Had a feeling it was something like that. Unfortunately because that's a reasonable criteria in other areas of business, people can't understand why it isn't the same thing for psychics.
My sister and I were talking about this and she said "oh, I always make sure I go to a genuine psychic". To which I replied " I can tell you how to spot a fake. It says the word 'psychic' in their advertisement. There all fucking fake!!!" . "Give me some money and I'll lie to you". She got upset with me for some reason.
Wow.... My mother (whose name started with the letter "M"), died of congestive heart failure (a chest issue). Steve is a psychic!!! Or like every other psychic, he just threw out some crazy coincidences.
I would love to hear what you have to say, although I don't imagine anything you say will change the really good feeling I get when I get an adjustment. It's like acupuncture and massage; they're so relaxing and feel great. You should try it :D
(1/2) **Dean Radin & Rupert Sheldrake** Even if Steve Hawking said 1+1=4, that would not make it true. **performing experiments …. statistically significant results.** Then why not submit it to the scientific community for peer review?
I think that a lot of cases of supposed psychic phenomena (i.e. predicting the future) is actually subconscious mathematics. What I mean is the subconscious brain puts two and two together using logic and things already seen, and comes up with a logical conclusion. However, a lot of people interpret it to mean they mystically predicted the future.
Oh... and my sister walked pigeon toed with her feet facing inwards. That also was fixed. BUT I still want to see you dig into them. I haven't shared the bullshit products that my parents have bought. The bullshit practices he pushed that are downright dangerous. And the VERY real risk of being seriously injured.
I think they are because I believe it has to do with personal discretion, eye witness and intelligence. Loads of children born from 1987 on have psychic abilities and loads of those children have been heavily medicated, diagnosed with mental illnesses and made to shut up and go to sleep. If you believe physicalility is all there is in all that exists your senses aren't working at their full capacity and there isn't much I can say to show you how to relate. I can tell you what kills the senses..
i couldn't agree more this is really a dispicable way of robbing people of money and dignity i see them on tv while zapping sometimes i listen for a while just to see the depth of the depravity sickening
My cousin was trying to convince her a psychic helped her for free to deal with her rape (because she was like, "How could she have known that?"). Probably wanted to keep up her credibility.
I can't believe people who believe this rubbish. Doesn't anyone have a brain anymore? Have you listened to the Long Island Medium lately: "Whose the mother energy around you that passed? How do you connect with (insert number, color, or object here)?" When was the last time you went to a party and someone you didn't know introduced herself as the mother energy around the area? Um, usually people just say "Hi, I'm Michelle. I'm Jill's mother." or whatever their real name is. Why don't mediums just get the real name of the person they are talking to? Sigh, I can't believe this crap.
I just spent 2 hours watching your videos, and this is my favourite one. Houdini was all about exposing these assholes, and I wish that was more prevalent today, instead of people like Ellen Degeneras welcoming the nonsense on her show. Thank you for taking the time to do these.
Empathy does not prove extra sensory perception, when you are asleep, dreaming of doing things, the activity in the brain is largely the same as when you would be doing these things while awake, your body is just paralyzed by chemicals the brain produces naturally throughout the sleep cycle, there is a portion of the brain that will "dream", if you like, of doing or having done to them that which they just saw another do, this is the mechanism that results in empathy.
I used to work master control at a local tv station and had to sit through a lot of this shit. Sylvia Brown on Montel, John Edward, etc. For some reason the one that bugged me the most was James Van Pragh. He actually claims that "Ghost Whisperer" is based on his life. Bullshit! The dude looks nothing like Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Someone with a name that starts with "M" that has chest issues... OMG it's Michael with his asthma! Oops wait... nope... can't be... he's still alive. :-)
slyvia brown told amanda berry's parents 10-11 years ago on the montell williams show she was dead. she was found alive in ariel castros house in clevend last year. she and 2 other girls where trapped there for 10 years. if slyvia brown was a real physic, then she should have known where amanda berry was. on the same show she told another couple their son was buried between 2 jagged rocks. he was found four years later living with his kidnapper. yet people still think she is a real physic.
At first I thought it said "5 things wrong with physics" I was like "Wait....What?"
Me too!
Yeah, I thought I was in for a laugh too. Didn't realize it was psychics till I heard him say it
+Cretaal same it was the whole reason i came to the video
Your videos are the only ones that really cut razor-like through all of the BS. Gotta love it!
Sherlock Holmes was fictitious but at least his determinations were based on fact. I hate vulnerability vultures!

"this is for entertainment purposes only" is also the disclaimer that every gambling casino has.
I thought for a second it said "Physics" and was a touch concerned. I didn't want something like that from a great UA-camr that I just found
Great job again, man. I love your no-nonsense approach to these videos.

Same
I found a few episodes of a program called Most Haunted that I used to watch when I was younger, I bought it hook line and sinker back then.

LOL
I knew a middle-aged woman who claimed to be a medium. But, she looked more like an extra-large!
Yeah! I should talk, because I'm also fat. But I think it's OK for me to make fat jokes, since I'm fat myself.
I used to watch episodes of John Edward's show with my sister for kicks, and there is one thing that stuck in both of our minds ever since. Another awesome and very accurate 5 stupid things video!!! Awesome job Steve!! Keep at them. You should do one about the Hulk next. Just a suggestion.
Someone else suggested that recently. I think one on chiropractic is definitely coming at some point.
A friend of mine called up a psychic hotline he saw on a billboard for a laugh, and the first thing the "psychic" asked him was "Where did you get this number?!", and well....you can probably see where it went from there.

Nope, no psychics, only empaths. But empath is a sensory thing more than it is a magic ability. On the bright side, you get SO MUCH work done under quarantine.
Glad you plugged Derren Brown. That guy is incredible.
Nah. I thought about it, but decided against it. The bit about the Olympics in the Five Stupid Things video I posted Monday is all I'm probably doing.
Grief vampires - thanks for this term, Steve.

Psychics that help catch criminals, but did nothing to stop the crime should be charged with aiding and abetting or accessory.
Most definitely.
Magicians are excellent entertainers and showmen - but they aren't liars. A professional magician will never claim to have actual powers. Psychics feed on ignorance, magicians are skilled artists.
I did too! I expected to hear a "spoof" about how gravity sucks etc.

Even if Steve Hawking said 1+1=4, that would not make it true.

Then why not submit it to the scientific community for peer review?
"Five Stupid Things About Me" is coming in a couple of months.
Lol, when I saw the icon, I thought it said:
"Five Stupid Things About Physics" lol
"Gravity is so stupid. Inertia couldn't possibly exist."
i couldn't agree more
this is really a dispicable way of robbing people of money and dignity
i see them on tv while zapping sometimes i listen for a while just to see the depth of the depravity
sickening
Baby steps.
Well done, by the way.
My cousin was trying to convince her a psychic helped her for free to deal with her rape (because she was like, "How could she have known that?"). Probably wanted to keep up her credibility.
Ah, America: jailing people for possessing pot, but not jailing frauds for exploiting people through claims of psychic powers.
I can't believe people who believe this rubbish. Doesn't anyone have a brain anymore?
Have you listened to the Long Island Medium lately: "Whose the mother energy around you that passed? How do you connect with (insert number, color, or object here)?"
When was the last time you went to a party and someone you didn't know introduced herself as the mother energy around the area? Um, usually people just say "Hi, I'm Michelle. I'm Jill's mother." or whatever their real name is. Why don't mediums just get the real name of the person they are talking to? Sigh, I can't believe this crap.
I can only feel other peoples pain or stress, but the title Grief Vampire would be kinda awesome :P
"Theres one born every minute"
I just spent 2 hours watching your videos, and this is my favourite one. Houdini was all about exposing these assholes, and I wish that was more prevalent today, instead of people like Ellen Degeneras welcoming the nonsense on her show.
Thank you for taking the time to do these.
Lol, I was like "five stupid things about physics?" hell yeah dyslexia
Empathy does not prove extra sensory perception, when you are asleep, dreaming of doing things, the activity in the brain is largely the same as when you would be doing these things while awake, your body is just paralyzed by chemicals the brain produces naturally throughout the sleep cycle, there is a portion of the brain that will "dream", if you like, of doing or having done to them that which they just saw another do, this is the mechanism that results in empathy.
please do 5 stupid things about physics! That'll be a bit harder I think :D
@stevelikes2curse: have you considered doing a "5 stupid things" video on chiropractic? It's just as woo-tastic as psychics.
Do one on Sylvia Browne!
OMG, I'm so thrilled you even considered commenting on my humorous comment. Thank you soooo much.
I have yet to find a psychic that can hear me even when I scream loud enough to hurt my host.
Is it really a coincidence that before your video was a commercial for a "love psychic?"
Someone with a name that starts with "M" that has chest issues... OMG it's Michael with his asthma! Oops wait... nope... can't be... he's still alive. :-)
And asthma is a throat issue
I felt like someone in your family was going to make a video about psychics today.
