    Nice station! I look forward to riding the new metro once it opens. A bit disappointing that they couldn’t time the opening right before Vivid or during Vivid, as it would’ve been a nice new way for crowds to travel to the city’s festivities with a brand new form of transport just opened.

    Thanks for the grand tour, Phil. The Metro is, in my opinion, a great improvement to Sydney's infrastructure. It will make moving around the city so quick and efficient. The stations are works of art and I was particularly impressed with Barrangaroo. As a regular guest of the Langham Hotel on Kent St I have had a bird's-eye view of its construction site so was very impressed to see what was below the ground (and water!). Can't say I'm quite so impressed with Martin Place but I will reserve judgment until my next Sydney visit after the line opens when I will follow in your footsteps and tour the lot.

Thanks so much for putting out these videos mate. It's so cool that Australia now has a proper metro. I mean, it makes sense, because Town Hall is a much more central location in the CBD than Central and Central gets a lot of its traffic from interurban travel, which helped it overtake Town Hall's numbers when it was the busiest station.

    Architecturally this is the least interesting station, which is a shame. I would have thought with a big bank behind the development they would have put more into the project. It also seems to differ greatly from the other stations, there doesn’t seem to be anything unique for this metro station (placemaking and identity). In my opinion the station already looks very aged, and it’s not even open yet! The yellow sandstone concrete for the walls and poor form work of the ceilings is not a good look. Also, is the way finding signage different? The overhead signs are all rounded, I don’t remember this being the case elsewhere.

    Why is it so BIG (and deep)? It is functionally no different to a station on the Picadilly line in London which is two enlarged tubes plus a bit of access space. It strikes me as a Taj Mahal, which is beautiful but not built for commuters in a hurry. There is almost enough unused space for a rock concert. It is a long way down and along to get anywhere. A station box designed for economical function here and at the other places, would work as well and would have reduced the cost of the project by $ Billions.(Thanks for the excellent video.)

    • @timtam53191
      @timtam53191 4 місяці тому +2

      It's deep because it needs to clear all the building foundations, infrastructure and terrain in the CBD. It's big because it's built to be futureproof. Stations once built remain in use for more than 100 years and they decided it's safer and more economical to build bigger now, than to realise decades down the line that future growth has hit the station's capacity. Look at Town Hall station, built in the 1930s, but crammed and congested now.
      It's bigger than anything we're used to in Sydney, but elsewhere around the world like Hong Kong or Paris, stations of this size are pretty much standard. Check out Admiralty station in Hong Kong for example.

    • @mgp1203
      @mgp1203 4 місяці тому +2

      Hardly. All busy stations should be built to accommodate large crowds like this. Just look at Town Hall and Parramatta. Decent size but overcrowding and congestion is a big issue.

      @@mgp1203 Yes, but there are only 2 tracks and no plans for more. I am not convinced on the need for the massive size. E.g. the long separation between the 2 lines, What's its purpose? I feel that "grandiose and extravagant " is an appropriate description.

    Should of been a standard guage railway with Sydney trains at the lead. Load of crap as a Sydney sider.

    Horrific design of the architecture. Looks like it’s designed to oppress and be completely soulless.

    How weird the world is. At the same time that light rail gets rolled out across the city with no platforms, no concourses, no retail outlets, the metro rail gets more slendiferous palaces than could have been imagined even in the golden age of railways.
    (And too bad if you have difficulty walking further than your frontgate).

    Looks very good. I hope I am not being too cynical, but, should we have to shelter there during a blitz, we'll be well better off than London was.
