  • I came to Yellowstone for a month this Fall with the sole focus being finding and photographing wild wolves.
    Check out this vlog where I photograph bison, elk, coyotes, and all the wildlife that call this National Park home.

    Enjoyed the video, thought it was well done. It seemed you were doing a lot of driving and has me wondering where did you stay? campsite, hotel, etc? Thanks in advance.

      Thanks! I stayed in Gardiner which was about an hour drive from Lamar Valley. There are plenty of hotels and lodges in town that make it very popular for visitors trying to stay up north. Though to be honest Silver Gate and Cooke City are much closer to Lamar Valley and would be a better choice if your sole focus is just wolf watching in the valley. The downside is that you would totally miss out on the other wolf packs that might be seen along the northern range in the morning, though I’ll admit I have yet to ever see them as more than a dot on the horizon. Either way you have to be prepared for long days and plenty of driving!

    Wolves are not the hardest animal to photograph in Yellowstone. That would be mountain lions and wolverines.

      Very true. Wolves are the hardest animal that you can regularly spot, but rarely get a good photo of. If you even manage to spot a mountain lion or wolverine then you go buy a lotto ticket

    Excellent! What lens did you use for the wolves toward the end of the video? Thanks!

      400mm f2.8. I should have put on my 1.4x teleconverter but they popped out so quickly that I didn't have time to react

    Did you camp or stay in an RV or cabin and hiked in every day?.. I’ve seen them a couple of times in Alaska, in Denali

      @ScrimshawPhotography  17 днів тому

      Nope I stayed in the town of Gardiner and drove in every day. I've camped before but I never get good sleep camping in bear country so 4 walls is required these days!

    How many yards away were you from the wolves? How long was your lens?

    • @ScrimshawPhotography
      @ScrimshawPhotography  21 день тому

      I was shooting with a 400mm lens, which is honestly not long enough most of the time. Most encounters were from about 400 yards off, except for the last one with the Junctions which was maybe 250 yards
