  • In this video I show I turned a regular $16.99 boxwood shrub into a bonsai tree. I found this tree at my local Lowes store, and I was amazed by how semi thick the trunk was with an interesting nebari. So I decided to give it a go. This tree was surprisingly easy to style but I was trying to be extra careful not to snap any of the thin branches. It definitely needed a repot, the soil was disgusting, it smelled like sewer water. Thanks for watching!

Did ya get Microphylla?? I dragged home one today from HD in a 3gal pot with an amazing bottom 4inches. Most of their junk was clumps and not a single trunk... Anyways, it's pretty hot in West texas to screw with it much now. Gonna try it in a spot for morning sun and shade in the afternoon.

Why didn't you use rubber pads on the tie-down branch wiring & on the trunk to keep it from digging into the wood?

Just found your channel. I have several small plants that I started from a cutting but my trunks are not too fat which look better. How do I get the trunks thicker ? I will keep the plant from getting bigger by trimming until the trunk gets thicker?

The only way to get the trunk to thicken is by letting the tree grow out with out pruning it. I would also either put the tree in a larger training pot or plant it on the ground. The natural soil is great for trees.

@@gravelpit5680how do you mean no soil? It stands in clay pallets in a generous size tray. The roots can be pruned in the same ratio as the branches. It has a good chance of survival if it is put in the shade and prevented from drying out.

@@woutmoerman711 I doubt it lived because that is not a tree. I have those in my backyard, it took 30 years for them to get big. They grow at a snails pace, even in the ground but in a pot after that kind of damage. That Shrub is wasted. How are the roots supposed to stay healthly and wet? Its not a maple, or ash or oak tree... its a delicate shrub. Boxwood is a poor choice for a bonsai.

id bet 1000 that plant is dead today, yellow leaves ir brown, dried out and disintegrating. bet! even if he watered it, that thing is still gonna die

@@woutmoerman711 for the record. i hope they all live. im not here to br mad or troll, sorry. I skipped a few waterings when I shut off the sprinkler system and the Summer axed three of them big box woods. once theres no green, its over. Theyre suppos3d to be green 365. if theyre in full sun, make sure to water that soil twice a week here in DFW
