  • At a time when we’re at our most divided, maybe the surprising answer to bringing us all together can be found through sports. In the midst of a loneliness epidemic, AJ Maestas, the Founder of Navigate, explores his own relationship with sports and how it made him a part of something greater than he could have expected when he left Fairbanks, Alaska at age 18.
    Whether you love football (in the American or global sense), baseball, Taylor Swift, or even if you don’t consider yourself a sports or entertainment fan at all, this talk offers an emotional and engaging look at why the fans in your life act the way they do. Our fundamental need for belonging drives us to find community and shared passion for sports, music, or the many other reasons we gather.

      So.. looks great. But personally I wouldn't go into that crowd and go chant. Because it would do nothing for me and be a chore. People differ. Always curious why someone would enjoy that though.. I think it's like religion - your mind believes that this soccer game (which won't affect your life in any way) is the most important thing.

    This is a way of belonging that encourages winners losers, a "we're better than you" mentality, and often violence and vandalism in fans -- aside from avoiding and dismissing events with your actual community, like you mentioned. Other options that include more people constructively, with no losers: craft/make art, create music (you gave examples, and yet schools often sacrifice the arts to sports), go to or create community events, play games. Also, have design that accommodates community space where people can meet that doesn't involve buying things, and otherwise keeping people isolated or paying to belong.

    The problem is that I'd actually have to like watching people kicking a ball around and not just see it as a disruption to my regularly scheduled programming . However I do think that developing any interest outside of work and connecting others about it can open doors !

  • @hannesRSA
    @hannesRSA 5 місяців тому +4

    Unfortunately I can't force myself to watch sports and get excited about strangers kicking a ball around. It's fundamentally boring and a waste of life to me.
    But i appreciate that the unexplained phenomenon of camaraderie and the benefits it brings to most people is great for them.
    Would be nice if following zero sports was socially acceptable and some alternate common interests were as common for social gatherings.

      @@Betweoxwitegan thought about it and there's nothing with the same "us Vs them" camaraderie. Concerts and food festivals give you a sense of community but the crowd isn't in sync as with a sports game. Better and more festivals is all I can think of. But I still don't like being expected to join in with fake enthusiasm if I'm simply not wired to accept a ball game as a religion.

    To those that complain about the “tribalism” in sports: I’ve sat with or near friends of rival teams and have never had any issues. We let the athletes duke it out, not fight among each other. We are ambassadors of the teams we support and we should act accordingly.

    Every TedX video after the end of talk the way crowd screams (/celebrates) sounds to me like that of 90s wrestling PC game crowd noise. And this is scary. I guess Ted is using fake crowd noise on their video and since it is computer generated they all sound same and scary

    Not really sport per se, but I saw this video of wrestling fans who are streaming the WWE event called Survivor Series. Towards the end, CM Punk came out of the ramp after 10 years away from the company and the video shows these big, burly men - streamers, youtubers, etc - just shriek like they got him in the balls 😂🤣 it's funny looking back, but to see these grown men act like kids again and just be so happy just because of someone coming out unexpectedly is really special. A lot of people may have watched alone, but a lot of people watched alone together and were part of this moment. That is what belonging is.
