This attakkatha is written by Balakavi Ramasasthrikal. The story of Banayudham is about the romantic tale of Usha, the daughter of Banasura and Anirudha, the grandson of Lord SriKrishna. Lord Siva was so pleased with Bana that he become the latter's gatekeeper thereby making him invincible. Bana, a great warrior himself, frustrated by not having anybody to fight with went to the extent of requesting the Lord himself a friendly fight. The Lord rejected it but assured him not too far will he meet with someone equal to him. At the same time, Usha fell in love with Anirudha. Chitralekha, the maid of Usha, brings Anirudha to Bana's palace using her magical power. Soon Bana knows it and jails Anirudha. Great battle follows in which Bana (even with the help of Lord Siva) was defeated and Usha is given in marriage to Anirudha.
The fragment presented in here is the scene in which Usha conveys her feelings to Chitralekha. This scene is considered to be a challenge to both the actors who represent Usha and Chitralekha. On the scene, you see the ladies playing and then Usha sleeping on the lap of Chitralekha in fatigue. After a while, Usha wakes up from a dream. She tells her mind that she had a dream in which a handsome young man came to her. She craves for his presence. Chitralekha draws the pictures of all handsome royal personnel and finally knows it was Anirudha who appeared in the dream. She brings Anirudha who was asleep in his chamber to Usha's bedroom without her knowledge.
Kottakkal Sivaraman who carved place for female characters in Kathakali by his superlative historic talents plays the lead role of Chitralekha together with Margi Vijayakumar, an established actor, as Usha.
