"We can't expect god to do all the work" "i survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me" -some of my favorite Joshua Graham quotes
"By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yay we wept when we remembered Zion. Remember, oh lord. The children of Edom, the day of Jerusalem who said. "Raise it, raise it even to the foundation." Oh, daughter of Babylon. Who ought to be destoryed happy shall we be, that rewarded thee as thou hast served us.. Happy, shall he be that taketh and dashing my little ones, against the stone. Do you know what it means?" - The Malpais Legate, Joshua Graham
"We shall see how brave you are when nailed to the walls of Hoover Dam, your body facing west so you may watch your world die." - Legate Lanius "I pray for the safety of all good people who come to Zion, even Gentiles, but we can't expect God to do all the work.” - Joshua Graham These two are such good characters.
I remember playing New Vegas when the game first came out and being genuinely uneased because of Joshua Graham. He doesn't show up in the base game itself, but the second DLC "Honest Hearts", and despite that you can still fill his presence in the Wasteland. People will whisper rumors about him, the Legion talks about him like some kind of monster, and there's random graffiti all around the Wasteland claiming "The Burned Man still lives" with horrifying depictions of him. He honestly felt like something out of a playground rumor back in the days before the internet with everyone claiming he was real but no one having any actual proof. Then you finally meet him and he just knocks it out of the park as far as character writing goes. He's one of the most well executed characters I've seen in fiction honestly. A top 10 of all time for me for sure.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Praise well deserved. You should consider playing Fallout New Vegas. Just like Final Fantasy you don't have to play the others to "get it"
Lanius and Joshua Graham had, by far, the absolute best voice lines and voice actors in all of New Vegas. Joshua Graham more so than Lanius, but only because Lanius got relatively few lines overall. Still, I would love to see you guys react to a video or two of their best lines.
So the storyteller makes Graham sound like he’s reverting back to his old ways but it’s more complex than that. So you meet Graham in the Honest Hearts dlc where the White Legs are trying to join the Legion but to do so they must wipe out New Canan and the tribes of Zion. There are 2 survivors of the New Canan massacre Daniel and Graham himself. Graham wants to fight to defend their home in Zion from the White Legs as well as getting revenge for what they did but Daniel is more of a pacifist and wants to leave the valley altogether. That’s of course where the player can make a choice on who to side with, you can even convince Graham not to go too far if you side with him. It’s probably one of my favorite dlcs from the 4 in New Vegas behind Lonesome Road.
I've been a part of the fallout universe for a long time, over a decade for certain. I'm still learning a few things i didnt know every video, so glad to be watching this with you guys!
Legate Lanius is one of the toughest bosses in Fallout. I had to be in T-51b power armor and use Ulysses staff to kill him. That final battle was Epic!
Caesar messed up when he declared Joshua Graham dead. When he later learned that Graham survived, he was terrified his old friend would seek revenge (a very justifiable fear) but if he announced Graham was still alive, he would be admitting he made a mistake, something that Caesar never does. So now, Caesar has a very dangerous enemy somewhere out in the wasteland, but he can't so much about it without appearing weak to his followers. He's sent many teams of assassins with vague orders to try and find Graham but, needless the say, none of them ever returned. When you meet Joshua, you can bring up that you could easily rat him out the Caesar, but he'll calmly explain why that would be suicide. Joshua is called the Burned Man because saying his real name is punishable by death in the Legion. People in the Legion (mostly the lower-class slaves) get around this by calling him the Burned Man. Joshua is also insanely durable. Not only did he survive being set on fire and tossed into the Grand Canyon, the NCR also tried to have him assassinated multiple times while he was still a Legate. Five times he was declared KIA by NCR Ranger snipers...and every time, he showed back up, still alive. He's also immune to Chems. Guy is borderline immortal. I'll never forget seeing Salt-Upon-Wounds, leader of the White Legs tribe and the one who ordered the destruction of the New Canaanites (nailing their bodies to walls and salting their lands among other horrible things), a man who is constantly being referred to as a monster in battle that knows no fear, on his knees and begging for his life when he encounter the Burned Man.
Joshua Graham is my favorite character in New Vegas. Not only is he a badass that can still kick ass despite being a mummy, he has also influenced people in the real world to become Christian.
When I was younger I was absolutely obsessed with Fallout and it wasn't until after the release of Fallout 4 I took a huge break it's so good to watch this lore series alongside you guys I am learning all over again! :)
I think, to a certain extent, Lanius recognizes that he’s a monster but just doesn’t see it as an issue. To him, it’s might makes right. That’s not to say he isn’t willing to listen to reason and think tactically. With a high enough Speech skill and the proper planning, it’s possible to convince Lanius to temporarily retreat from the Mojave.
Also in the battle of Hoover Damn if you side with the NCR, you eventually make it to their camp fighting your way through and at the end you meet, have a 100% speech check dialogue conversation with Lanius and get him to surrender and run away without killing him. If not, you fight and kill him and the second battle of Hoover Dam is officially over either way, fight to the death or surrender. Also you can kill both Caesar and President Kimball (NCR) LOOONG before the battle of Hoover Dam even happens... I could go on for hours explain every little detail that makes New Vegas the best Fallout, but I'd be here forever. The game is just so reactive to how you've been treating every faction. So much to the point if you're vilified by either the NCR or Legion, they start sending hitmen after you every once in a while. You see a group of NCR rangers or Legates in the distance and think: _"Oh sheeeit, here we go again."_ they initiate dialogue automatically saying something to the effect of, _"The [Insert Faction Here] has marked you for death. Prepare to die!"_ then you go into combat. It's really cool, reminds you that ALL your actions DO actually have an effect on the world, it's actually reacting to you. Also why I like game with great A.I. scripting like Rockstar's games, immersive when NPCs actually freakout with a loading revolver in their face or panic/scream/run when you get into a shootout with the cops.
Lanius was always kind of a blood thirsty killing machine, ceaser just keeps him in line and gives him outlet for his desire for war, that's fighting the enemies of the legion. But don't get it twisted, being in the legion doesn't mean you are entirely safe from Lanuis. Disobey orders, betray the legion or commit acts of cowardice, You WILL face the Wrath of Caesar, the wrath of Caesar, Is Lanius. And you won't survive.
The way to beat Lanius diplomatically is by telling him he has to go back home so he can bring the entirety of the Legion with him because there's too much of NCR to conquer for the one he brought with him... it's the only language that man understands. He promises to come back soon, but in the meantime the game counts this as a "win" because, hey, bloodshed prevented. Graham is such a breath of fresh air in games like these. He's a devout Mormon who knew he screwed up in life and was willing to do what it takes to atone, using his faith in God as his way towards that goal and to force all that Legion business out of his mind. When his people were massacred, he turned to his faith and saw that he may be the only one left who can answer the injustice brought upon him, justifying his call to unleash righteous fury by saying can't just "expect God to do all the work". He can be turned around by reminding him of his time just before the Legion started, when there's this Followers guy who turned into Caesar using his knowledge of Rome to teach a tribe how to fend for themselves. Now that he has a new tribe to call his own which was under attack as well, he has to be careful not to transform into a Caesar of his own, himself. It's really hard to find genuinely compelling narratives like this in video games even with all the developments in the medium through the decades, and that's why I dig the ever loving crap out of New Vegas.
Joshua graham is beyond one of my favorite characters in all of fiction, if you guys would have time I would love for you guys to watch oxhorns series of honest hearts which goes into great detail of the dlc that Joshua graham is in to fully understand the character of Joshua graham. Of course you could also play the game yourselves if you wanted to.
Thanks for the channel rec. it’s one we’ve had our eye on and heard before. Also fallout new Vegas and 4 have been recommended for us playing as well 😅
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames if you ever do get the chance, I will say playing new Vegas is more story oriented as opposed to four being more gameplay focused. If you’re looking for good writing and interesting quests with intriguing dialogue, go with new Vegas. If you’re wanting a game that’s a little more simple and something to turn your brain off and have fun with, go with four. Or play both and enjoy the contrast between the two studios.
Every time I watch your reaction to these, just makes me want to hop on steam and launch New Vegas lol. The game has SOO much replay value, not just on endings, but just to see how differently the world reacts to you based on karma & faction reputation. Also well as the amount of ACTUAL freedom or choice on how to complete a quest, some quests literally giving you an optional objective(s), which are ALWAYS worth doing, but are literally telling you it's optional if you really don't want to do it in order to complete the quest. The depth and writing of this game is great. Not gonna sit here and pretend I'm a philosophy major, but being a teen boy in High School while playing this REALLY made me think. Even talking Caesar is interesting to hear his long thought out views on the world. The storyteller did a good job summarizing Caesar, but hearing from the man himself in detail is something else. He's bad man, but he's not a mad man. Of course conquering by brute force and ruling by fear is realistically not smart, you don't make ANY allies (again, story-teller explain that as well, they basically have to rely SOLEY on brute force and raiding to keep the army going), but is dangerously smart so he doesn't care. If it has to take the Hoover Dam and New Vegas by brute force, he will and he CAN. The only person that can stop or help him, is you.
"We shall see how brave you are when nailed to the walls of Hoover Dam, your body facing west so you may watch your world die." - Legate Lanius Lanius is a beast! But that's about it. He's not much more than a brute who will run the Legion into the ground if you let him. Especially since the Legion has the same problem as ancient Rome: their entire concept depends on the constant influx of more loot, more slaves, and more land to conquer. And they are MASSIVELY dependent on their leader Caesar. Without him, and with the NCR as an obstacle to their constant progress, they will quickly go the way of all great empires in our past: Power struggles and disintegration. Mainly because most of the other senior Legion members don't believe in it the way Caesar or Graham do. To them, it's just a more successful form of the predatory raider life they led before. There is no deeper identification with the Legion "ideals" behind it.
Joshua Graham and Edward Sallow were close friends before the Legion. Both had similar goals of protecting their people and spreading new knowledge into the Wasteland. Joshua is also a strict Mormon who believes in absolution, but Caesar convinced him that there was no purpose in spreading the old religions, especially a peaceful one, when the world was scarred by nuclear war. Joshua Graham's story also continues further into the game's DLCs, where he struggles with his two lives as a Mormon missionary and as a general under Caesar. Since his exile as the Burned Man, he's let go of his hate and has found peace in his heart, forgiving his enemies and wishing good will upon them. His struggle into becoming a monster and falling into his old ways relates to how he wants to protect his people from Caesar's attacks but doesn't want to become a mass murderer once again. His entire story is an allusion to the Book of Joshua in the Old Testament. He even refers to Tommy guns as "holy storm drums," quotes Scripture often, and claims that "killing, when done righteously, is a chore like any other." When the Storyteller talks about Lanius becoming a monster, I believe he means it in the sense that he has lost his mind rather than his morals. Lanius has always been comfortable with war, but unlike Caesar, he has little to no ego. The mention of the NCR envoy refers to a possible path in the story where the player chooses to side with the NCR. You can actually debate with Lanius about the logistics of the Legion's victory in Vegas and show him logically that this would expand their territory so fast that they would be unable to control it all. Alternatively, you can mention to Lanius that there will be infighting inside the Legion with factions out to destroy him just as Caesar destroyed Joshua Graham, which is not exactly a lie. He is their bogeyman, and while all members of the Legion worship Caesar, they see Lanius as a monster who has crushed them and scattered their people. He's definitely the Darth Vader to Caesar's Emperor. Coupled with all the losses from the war, Lanius only has a pyrrhic victory. If you debate these points well, there is no final boss, and Lanius accepts your wisdom, then he claims he will return one day to face the NCR again when the Legion has strengthened itself. If you have a similar discussion with Caesar, he'll promptly dismiss the claim and threaten to kill you. If Lanius were to continue waging war for the Legion, it's safe to assume he would start drinking the Kool-Aid and believe they are invincible, which would lead to their downfall.
If you guys are interested, there is a Fan-made live action short film about Lanius before he joined the Legion, it shows the events that were narrated by the Storyteller, the film even got the approval of the game devs, its actually really good, they even had the real voice actor of the character voice him the film, you guys should check it out one day.
The second (and final) battle of Hoover is DRASTICALLY different depending on which side you're on. The Legion is TOUGH, it's a struggle even with all the added help you can bring the NCR (or anyone you're siding with in that battle), everyone is fighting for their lives, but the legates are on a whole other level. NCR soldiers are actually pretty nervous (throughout the game if you listen to their dialogue) of the Legion breaking through and taking the Dam where as the Legion are confident they will take it. If you literally weren't the deciding the factor and the battle happened without you, I think the Legion would've won. Though that's a hypothetical because the legion are outnumbered, but they're complete savages lol. Literally massacre and burn a whole town of people near a MAJOR NCR trading route back to California, just to prove a point. As well as massacring a mini NCR outpost of a handful of soldier outside of the town of Novac in the game.
Malpius Legate is one of the two founders of the legion but the legion as it is is a reflection of Caesar's vision which seem to align with that of Malpius except that Malpius seems to retain some of his original principles as compared to Caesar's new(old) extremist ideologies. Malpius and Caesar's relationship can be compared to that of Pompey and Caesar in ancient Rome, that of allies who started of with a vision for their nation but fell out along the road. Malpius and Lanius are considered the senior most Legates who have independent command of their respective legions and are often sent to their own expeditions/ campaigns. As Malpius engaged the NCR in the West, Lanius was in the East pushing into Colorado with a similar deadline looming if he failed to capture Denver. Despite what the lore has said about him in this video, he is said to be proficient in managing his conquests and administering conquered tribes and lands. He is also one of the most tolerant and civil of the Legates who does not fully subscribe to Caesar's ideologies with regard to conquests and administration.
Lanius's purpose was never protection, it was service and loyalty. He served out of loyalty to his tribe, and then those he served betrayed him by surrendering to Caesar. Then he transferred that loyalty to Caesar.
Who'd have guessed that old Roman tactics and gear fashioned after them would fail against guns and modern military tactics? Odds are that even if the Legion does take the damn, they'll be drawn into a new killbox by the NCR. Lanius is not a brilliant man, just a strong one without mercy.
if the ncr doesn't just fall apart due to infighting that is. the NCR is made up of a hodgepodge of different cultures all with their own agendas and every individual has their own agenda on top of that, they're running on limited resources just as much as the legion, which forced them to become an expansionist power to begin with, with the difference being that Caesar is making an effort to rely less on limited resources, the legion uses healing medicine made from plants that can be farmed instead of relying on stimpaks and chems, he uses simple weapons that can be manufactured anew with limited access to technology as opposed to the NCR who can't even properly maintain their own equipment, with even their elite forces wearing blown out suits of power armour that they have no idea how to maintain, let alone how to get a broken one working again, while simultaneously starting conflicts with the few forces in the wasteland who could help with that issue. what the legion lacks is farmland, arizona is vast, but large parts of it are arid, once the legion comes across territories that can support the self the sustainability caesar strives for, their in a pretty good place.
The legion doesn't just use "old Roman tactics and gear fashioned after them" It uses a combination of ancient tactics with new ones, same with technology. The legion uses guns, they use plasma weaponry, howitzer, etc. The difference between the ncr and legion is that the legion basically has multiple armies at different levels of technology by having all recruits use only the low-tech, then all the way up to the commanders everyone gets more and more advanced technology to use in battle. That's exactly what you see when they hunt you down as well. The legion hunting parties are mostly recruits but the more vilified you get the more veterans and centurions will be in their team, who will use guns and plasma weapons.
This game is just amazing in all ways possible. You guys should play it and join the factions to decide the fate of New Vegas and the Hoover Dam and to know better the story and the philosophy of Joshua Graham. I like how him is a realistic person even being very religious character.
the funny thing is Lenius is not a total meathead... he fking smart for someone that strong. Mainly because most of the other senior Legion members don't believe in it the way Caesar or Graham do. To them, it's just a more successful form of the predatory raider life they led before. There is no deeper identification with the Legion "ideals" behind it.
Talking down Lanius with maxed out speech using logic to destroy the legion philosophy is always satisfying
He even refers to Tommy guns as "holy storm drums," quotes Scripture often, and claims that "killing, when done righteously, is a chore like any other."
When the Storyteller talks about Lanius becoming a monster, I believe he means it in the sense that he has lost his mind rather than his morals.
If Lanius were to continue waging war for the Legion, it's safe to assume he would start drinking the Kool-Aid and believe they are invincible, which would lead to their downfall.
ooooo cant wait for the followers of the apocalypse! my favorite faction!
😎🤟
fun fact, the dutch word for emperor is keizer, which is pronounced the same way as Caesar
If you guys are interested, there is a Fan-made live action short film about Lanius before he joined the Legion, it shows the events that were narrated by the Storyteller, the film even got the approval of the game devs, its actually really good, they even had the real voice actor of the character voice him the film, you guys should check it out one day.
Link please
Next time: The most squeaky clean faction in Fallout New Vegas.
The legion doesn't just use "old Roman tactics and gear fashioned after them"
It uses a combination of ancient tactics with new ones, same with technology.
The legion hunting parties are mostly recruits but the more vilified you get the more veterans and centurions will be in their team, who will use guns and plasma weapons.
another recommandation for your fallout reactions, there is a fanmovie called "Lanius" about his backstory. cheers
Fallout game known for solving quest with many way not just shoot enemy but you can talk your way out almost everything in the game if you have enough Charisma and Lenius is the only one in the entire game that require you to get lvl 100 speech skill to stop him.
Sone of my favorite fallout characters
