DJ Koze might be one of the world's best producers, but above all he's a DJ, and it's his DJ ear that governs. Just as in a great set, so with his releases: “Seeing Aliens” came out of nowhere, a big buzzing beast of a track, to announce that Koze was back on the scene and prime everyone for the coming album, knock knock. But now that Koze has your attention, it's time to remind everyone what's most important about club music, pull things back, take a turn to the left, and get deep into the groove.
Thus “Pick Up”: the second single from knock knock is 100% pure groove, doubly so in the extended 12” version. In a sense it's incredibly familiar - it is essentially a filter disco record, very close to something you could imagine coming out of Paris around the turn of the millennium. But of course, this is Koze. Nothing is normal or familiar in his world, and he's taken this most foundational of clubland staples into new territory. Flipping samples of Gladys Knight & the Pips “Neither One Of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)” and Melba Moore’s “Pick Me Up, I’ll Dance“, it creates something completely airborne, shot through with emotions such as gods must feel: not quite explicable to the human mind but strong enough to knock you off your feet. In its way it's absolutely as powerful as “Seeing Aliens”, but it comes in like the proverbial iron fist in a glove of velvet.

I used to listen to this song every night before going to sleep while I was studying abroad. After a day of hanging out with the most amazing people from all over the world, the words "it's sad to think, I guess neither one of us wants to be the first to say goodbye" hit really hard. Now that I am back home, this song brings me a lot of great memories. Walking through the streets of a little town called Ormskirk after a drunk karaoke night, staying up to see the sunrise and getting high with my new friends. This song will have a very special and lovely place in my heart forever.

Fui a un cumpleaños promedio donde el DJ solo ponia cosas comerciales y el top 100 de mi querido México, De repente empezó a cambiar el estilo de musica lentamente y cuándo puso este track en esa fiesta, Literalmente dropeo duramente en la pista de baile, Fue una hermosa noche esa vez y enserio me sorprendió mucho ver que una canción House pegaba duramente en una fiesta de ese tipo en un ciudad que es rarisimo escuchar esto.

Heard this on the radio for the first time two months ago, had it rolling in my head without knowing what it was. I tried internet searches with the Gladys Knight lyrics(?) and still couldn’t find it. I then heard it in a club in Manchester, Shazammed it, and now I find out it’s five years old. 😂

Haha this takes me right back. Reminds me of how much I love my older sister and her little cheeky lot. Back in the late 90s, she introduced me to all your Zero7s, Molokos, Cassius, Groove Armadas, Basement Jaxx when I was a 10 year old boy. Now, for the first time in my live, I gave her some good old 1999-ish house in return. 2 days later she sent me a video of herself dancing away to the tune with my three little nieces in their living room. 40 years of age but still has got the groove!

Yesterday In Barcelona, Brunch Electronic, Mr. Laurent Garnier, during a magnificent 4 hrs set, played "pick up". This tells a lot about this masterpiece by Dj Koze.
This was definitely the festival/rave theme of 2018/2019 for me personally. Makes me said to know that there basically will be no 2020 season, but that at the same time makes me even more grateful for the 2018/2019 (and other years) memories! Take care everyone
