How The 1963-1965 Buick Riviera Solidified Buick's Luxury Car Credentials

- The Pontiac Grand Prix may have beat Buick in entering into the Personal Luxury Car market to compete with the Ford Thunderbird by one model year. However Buick made an even bigger impact in this market with the 1963-1965 Riviera which established Buick as a genuine luxury car brand.

These cars were pieces of art.
65 Riviera headlights are the coolest ever put on any automobile… Ever!
I agree, I always remember them-and the car-from Roadhouse!
100%
@@bobhill3941 “do those work?“… “They sure do“… “I’ll Take It!!”
@@trainnerd3029 👍😃
@@trainnerd3029 I was surprised they were mechanical, that's a plus for me, because I don't usually trust the reliability of hidden headlights.
Have a great 2024.
The 1963-1965 Riviera were the best looking Buicks ever built in my opinion.
Randy, and the wheel/rims were the best of any cars then and now.
Absolutely beautiful style car, well ahead of its time 😊
Those were my favorite years for Riviera. Very striking look for them.
These 7 minutes of watching enriched my life.
This was the time when GM built the greatest cars and thy were also beautiful and powerful. It was the time of my youth and I still believe that no car built after 1972 was better.
I own 6 Sixties GM cars, Chevies and Pontiacs and a friend of mine owns at least five Buicks.
And those cars were extremely reliable. I remember I received a 67 Oldsmobile that had over 500 000 miles on the odometer and the engine did not have any rebuild.
The Rivieras stand out as extremely beautiful vehicles. I never get bored looking at those elegant body lines.
First gen Rivi one of my favorites especially 1965
The first generation Riviera is one of THE all time great post-war American designs, along with the 67 Eldorado.
Would the 66 Toronado be on your list of great vehicles?
@@jamesjohn834 I know a lot of people put it in with the other two I listed, but as cool as it is, I prefer the C3 Corvette over the first gen Toronados. Cool cars for sure, good looking, but for me not quite at the level of the Riviera or Eldorado.
The 2nd gens were my favorites, but these cars were gorgeous.
Incredible information. This is my favorite car of all time. The 1965.
I've always wanted a '65, the clamshells were art in motion! I wouldn't sneeze at a '69, either.
I did manage to grab a beautiful unrusted '71 back in '83. The previous owner had disabled the air pump, tuned the Rochester 4bbl perfectly, added a shift kit to the TH400, buffed the front antiswaybar and substituted polyurethane front bushings to correct mushing. That was one of two cars I regret letting go of.
Love the boattail rivieras
Thanks for covering this car. One of Bill Mitchell's best designs. Feminine and muscular at the same time. Right up there with the Cord 810 and 996 Porsche Carrera.
Such a magnificent automobile Thank you for covering this absolutely gorgeous car
Amazing cars... the Riviera's..
My grandma had a 1965 Riviera and it’s still one of the most beautiful car.I’ve ever been in. This includes Cadillacs.
Great to see an upload from you. Always a good time.
My uncle hauled cars for GM had a 65 ,very futuristic
Had a 63 & still think it was the best car i ever had. My cousin is restoring it. Can't wait to see it on the road again.
Terrific as always!!!!
Another great video, I enjoy every single one that comes out , & have a great new years
The 1965 was the beautiful. A finished design.
Thank you for the excellent video. This had great photograph images. The information really brought things together nicely. Thank you for discussing the personal luxury segment.
My favorite.
Proud 63 owner here
Gotta be top 5 car of from 1960 to present
Love your new logo, the instrument panel of an ‘82 Trans Am, I had an ‘83, they changed the needles to red that year
Beautiful car the '63 - '65 Riviera. Just a delight to look at.
Roadhouse.
A 65 Buick Rivera GS with a 70 455 Stage 1 GS and a 4 speed (6 speed today), 3:73 rear, or a 67 GTO with a 70 455 HD, 4 speed, and 3:73 are my two dream cars. Choosing between them would be hard, but the Buick would probably win.
Nice!
Great video on a BEAUTIFUL car!!! Personally, you could have went longer talking about the Rivera. I have loved the 65 since I saw it in "Roadhouse" as a kid. Have yet to see one in person but hopefully I will someday. Did these not sell well??
We love Rivies
And this channel
Great content and your correct, that is one beautiful automobile! It drips style and sportiness..
Thanks for posting a new video!
My grandfather built Buicks in the 60s
Great vid!!!! 🤜🤛
The Rivera.......My favorite Buick of all time, it's just absolutely beautiful😍! P.S. so was the 1995-99 model year IMO.
Patrick Swayze highly sought after this car for his Go To work Car
The name is Dalton.
I could almost believe autos from this time were crafted by Gods. Can't even look at cars today, I was born too late.
Modern cars are designed by regulations classic cars by artists.
When you need to clean up a "Road House" dive and you need a car you can afford to be trashed while you are a Cooler, accept not substitutes other than a Buick Riviera.
Although I loved the clam shell headlights of the '65, I just didn't like the rear bumper and taillights. If I could have a '63 or '64 with those headlights I'd be in heaven.
Another great video!
An amazing car, I'd like you to do a series on the amazing 66 to 70 generation of Riviera's
Great video as always! What would it have cost to add 3 gauges instead of idiot lights at the time? Surely it would have been worth it to make the car more complete. Keep adding videos please.
I had a 63, a great car
63s were the nicest ones: Last Dyan-Flow.
In the series Mad Men this is the car Don Draper should have bought instead of a Cadillac. A guy like him was right in the center of the target audience!
If I had room enough at my house, I'd take one any day!
One minor design flaw is the antenna on the front fender. It just stands out like a sore thumb. It would look way cleaner on the rear fende like most cars had at the time. Coincidentally the black Rivi in this video they removed the front antenna when the car was restored - as most people do unless they're a purest.
The first gen Rivieras were the best looking and most stylish of the breed. After '65 they shared the basic body with the Olds Tornado which gave it a bloated look. in '71 they debuted the boat tail platform and you either loved or hated it. After that they just kept getting worse in the styling department.
Good video. I have always liked the early Rivs. Funny…I can never tell the difference between a ‘63 and a ‘64. Even funnier…the Riv owners can’t tell the difference, either.
'63 hood ornament is a flat enamel medallion. '64 is a stand-up chrome sculpture.
I have had two 63's and they were good cars no problems wish l still had both but time goes on. THANK GOD. You can Not take Nothing with you when you leave this world No Matter.!! AMEN.
The engine block was made with a high nickel content which made it a much more durable torque monster.
I had a '65 Riviera and found that they are beautiful cars with the nailhead engines, but the rust monster claimed most of them.
The Grand Prix was actually a Chrysler 300 rival and was aimed at the Galaxie 500 XL rather than the Thunderbird.
The reason Buick was awarded the Riviera was because both Cadillac and Buick wanted to make design changes while the head of Buick was in synch with Bill Mitchel’s matchless design. The first generation Rivieras are some of the most well designed and powered car for the ages.
The best looking is right. The late 80s/early 90s Riviera was great too with the 3.8 liter turbocharged V-6 more or less taken from the GNX 😁
In my 1963 I got 7 mpg city and maybe on a good day with a tailwind 10 mpg highway. But you had power to spare and if you didn't want anyone to pass you on the highway..............they didn't.
Wouldn't you really rather drive a Buick?😊❤
360 gross horsepower is only 295 net
Am I unique person who takes it easy now what auto concern produces a car or a truck (Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet, etc.)? I see only Mustang, F150, Corvette, Challenger, Ram, Impala, and others. So I think if GMC designed some new sport car to name it Pontiac TransAm or, let us say, created some big family wagon and called it Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser, I wouldn't tell a word against it, because in the modern world it makes no difference who designed, and who will assemble a car. Only car/truck name tell it for itself.
The 1st gen Riv's are my favorite. After 1972, they were ugly, underpowered boats, followed by 2 years on the B body/LeSabre chassis.
America. Home of the four cylinder kiddie cars. Mosquitoes start your engines.
