  • Now that I have all stainless steel mounting hardware on my mirror I have finally reattached my tuner and went to the band's checking to see what would tune. So I did just a quick run through including identifying on everyone that would give me a decent swr. Changing the hardware from the mixed metals to the same metal and Welding things together made a difference on noise levels and bandwidth, it also seemed to help my tuner function to a degree better. If you're a ham radio operator on a budget, this is probably exciting for you, I tried to run through it for fairly quickly and show all the details without going overboard. Hope you enjoyed, 73 Alpha echo seven Quebec Tango

    One of them big make up brushes are great for dusting your radio and a micro fibre cloth on top! Have one of them radios still in the box. Gonna give it away to my nephew only 11 when he passes his foundation license in France. Hell he can have my AT 180 as well.

    Does a 102" need to be tuned for standard 40ch CB radio? The guy that sold me the equipment told me it didn't need it. He also stated that I should use 18' worth of Cable

      coax length, what ever fits! no magic number... having said that, if your doing a co-phase, a quarter wave length can be a tuning stub, or help you transform your resistance a tid bit, and half wave lengths can pass things through... for most single antenna applications, just get what ever fits! I have random length stretches of coax from radio to amp, amp to antenna, my SWR is 1.1:1!!!
      Use what works, toss what does not! That is the magic trick in this hobbie!!!!!!! As far as the 102" being perfect, sure, in a perfect world, I found on my truck I had to add 6 inches, that made my setup perfect. Make sure you have good ground system, and clean connectors, I have to pull my stuff apart every spring and clean it. Have fun putting it together and using it...

      @rodspencer2000  4 роки тому

      o ya, don't argue with the CB guy, just make your shit work, what ever it takes, then use it, if he says 18' and you try it, if it doesn't work, change it! Don't get stuck on stupid things that are supposed to be the PERFECT STANDARD! These things are only the starting point, if you find you need to modify your setup, then do it! 73

      Depends! Your ground system & where you mount the whip. Using simple math, lets look at some numbers, starting points really, your SWR meter will let you know if you need to add or cut your antenna a bit.
      102"= 28.94 Mhz = near middle of 10m ham
      108.5"= 27.205 = channel 20 on cb
      The 102" whip band width may be good enough to cover all 40 channels with an acceptable SWR, if your happy with it, then no tuning needed.
      I personally wanted CH 20 to be where my SWR is lowest, so I added 6 inches, and BOOM! I was super happy. 1.1 swr. Hope this helps, and no matter what you do in this wonderful hobby, HAVE FUN! 73

    That discoloration looks like moisture/water.It's easy for moisture to get into a PL-259 connector when turned up like that.I'd replace the coax & use an elbow connector on the next coax as well as some good electrical tape at least.If the rig is one you own or drive all of the time wrap that connector with electrical tape & a good wrap of Coax Seal & then another layer of electrical tape.make sure the coax seal is between the layers of tape that you install so that it can all be removed if needed or when you get a different truck.Also I have found that the MFJ 929 is a far better automatic tuner for the HF Bands.It will tune what my LDG AT-1000 won't touch.It will tune a 102" stainless steel whip on 40 thru 10 meters & anywhere in between.I am usually NOT a fan of MFJ but I am very pleased with how it operates with my ICOM 706 MKIIG.Even on the bands that the LDG tuner will tune the MFJ tuner tunes much quicker & the SWR is always better. de W4KVW {:>)

    I have 102-in stainless steel whip on a Toyota Corolla with a ball mount and spring right in the middle of my trunk, I run a 18 ft coax right to the radio and got a one to one match. now some people get a one to three one to five match that is not acceptable because the radio operates it's best when it's at its lowest match that's the way I Work It. The trick is to get the correct length of coax to the 102 inch whip either by adding to it or subtracting a little bit from it but the rule is every nine feet is a match on 102 in whip, and my radio gets out good I have a Galaxy
    DX 86 V 10 meter amateur radio I put an rm Italy small kicker upper and lower side band plus Am I dead key on Am side 100 w swinging up to 150 and on sideband I swing up to 220 Watts it's all I need. I am using an SGC239 antenna coupler mounted inside a cable TV amplifier case, used a "gumdrop" mount on one end of the box with a heavy duty spring feeding a Shakespeare 108" fiberglass whip. Box is bonded with one inch braid to chassis and powered by a set of power injector / power splitter that was featured in an old QST article. Works great from 40-6 meters, no issues whatsoever. Cost? Just the coupler ( on sale many moons ago) a few minor parts for power devices, cable box, free. Beats paying what SGC wanted for a similar unit which came out to over three times the cost.

      Your antenna is the most important part of your radio system. Not all antennas are made equal, you can take Brand X and put it on your car and it works fine , you can take that same brand and put on your pickup and it may not do anything right at all. Sometimes you have to go through a couple of antennas to find the one that works with your vehicle. Make sure that it is capable of handling the kind of power you're going to put through it, you're running good coax, and you have a good ground system to the Mount of your antenna. It is also a good idea to check and clean your antenna system in the spring every year. Lots of Road Grime from the winter driving builds up in places and can cause SWR issues. Good luck getting the best antenna setup and have fun when DX comes back around!

    It looks all well done now, so might not be a good advice, but if you can move the tuner right next to the antenna, you'll have better results. The tuner as it is, matches the coax and the whip to a resistive load, so the antenna doesn't radiate but is part of the antenna, and add losses. But it might not be practical to do so :/ anyway cool video ;)

    I've always wondered, why do truckers tilt their antennas forward at what appears to be 45deg

    • @rodspencer2000
      @rodspencer2000  6 років тому +2

      good question sean. I tilt mine for two reasons, one being clearance of everything, the other being less rfi back into my equipment. When I had my antennas stood straight up the hot point of the antenna, being the middle, was right next to the metal of the door, where some wires for all kind of computer controll run up the door on the inside, so moving the antennas forward gets the antenna radiation hottest spot out further into the air. You may find as I did that your antenna will give you a better swr band width and less feedback into the computers, more so true with higher power amplifiers. For those who run just legal 4 watts on 27mhz CB, its more about looks. Hope that helps you some...73

      Thanks for the reply, I'm a ham also, as well as a CDL driver, local only and we aren't allowed to have our own radios in the trucks, so my radio doings is all in my POV.
      I use the Yaesu FT-857D, currently without any sort of tuner, planning on either the LDG YT-100 or the FC-30.
      My antennas are MFJ hamsticks and an Outbacker style multiband. Lots to work on for sure. I just bought a 102"whip which I'll most likely trim to about 98 &1/2" to be resonant on 10M and still usable on 11M when we go on a road trip. I found your video when I did my search on the 102" whip.

    • @rodspencer2000
      @rodspencer2000  5 років тому +1

      Hi Sean, I am sure you will find NO NEED to trim the 102" to be resonate on 28-29! I actually had to add 6" to mine to get it into the CB band better, but still have good swr all the way up to 28.7 with out tuner. Check it with your install before you cut! 73 and good DX AE7QT

    • @RFMaster6
      @RFMaster6 5 років тому +1

      It's cut to 99", which works out to a center frq. of 28.36mhz. Actually that was my first cut. After filing the rough and installing, it had a virtually flat SWR on 10.The needle barely moves. I think if I remember correctly, the SWR;'s didn't hit over 2 until about 29.6. 11m is 1.4-1.7. Fully acceptable. Bearing in mind I'm QRP on CB, with an unmodified Cobra 25, and up to full power on 10m with the hf radio. I use a Yaesu FT-857D with a LDG meter which plugs into the control head for the test. planning on getting an MFJ-902B "Tiny Travel Tuner" 150 watts, 80-6m . Possibly a YT100 later.
      I use a Diawa 2pos RF switch to toggle between the two radios on the HF side..
      The whip is attached to the bumper of my 2015 Nissan Frontier with a Hustler 1 & 1\2" ball mount, so I get a sufficient ground. My other antenna is an MFJ-1699 multi-band Outbacker style antenna that I have attached to my tool box. That antenna is still a work in process. The grounding needs to be improved before it can be decent. I use the 4"HD spring for flexibility if it hopefully doesn't encounter a limb.
      For 6m, I use another 2pos. RF switch In addition to the 857, I also have a Yaesu FT-1900. It shares the Diamond M-285 whip on the hood. As I'm sure you know, in general a 5/8 wave on 2m is a 1/4 wave on 6.That antenna, like the cut 102 is virtually flat on 6. Those three antennas are fed to the HF side of the FT-857D with an MFJ 3 pos. RF switch. I use three RF switches. I seldom us six anyway, its just on an antenna that will work for the occasion that I might use it.
      The VHF/UHF side of the 857 is on a Diamond dual band antenna.
      Three antennas, three radios, and three switches lol, I guess it's a technique, also know as a work in process.
