- Tatra T815 is a truck family, produced by Czech company Tatra. It uses the traditional tatra concept of rigid backbone tube and swinging half-axles giving independent suspension. The vehicles are available in 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, 10x8, 10x10, 12x8 and 12x12 variants. There are both air-cooled and liquid-cooled engines available with power ranging from 230--610 kilowatts (310--820 hp). As a succesor to Tatra T813 it was originally designed for extreme off-road condition, while nowadays there are also variants designated for mixed (both off- and on-road) use.
The T815 and its descendant models brought the Czech truck racer Karel Loprais to victory six times in the Paris Dakar Rally. In addition to civilian/commercial uses, the truck family is also widely used by the military of the Czech Repiblic, Slovakia, Saudi Arabia, India, and Israel.

Tatra trucks are simply amazingly tough,reliable machines. This is a truck the Czech people should be extremely proud of. Tatra 8X8 815 is in my dreams, but I also wouldn't mind a older 813 either. Fantastic video of an amazing machine,thank you for making it.

military surplus ones are not that expensive
the benefit is also that the wheel independently copies the terrain (swing half axle). Also the central tube provides cover for the whole system and it cant be penetrated by rocks thus demaged. Also the half axle combined with the special air suspension provides more stability. The lack of U joints is just a side effect of the whole system, which was created to be durable and stable and put the traction to ground.

Tatra is really perfect machine in all conditions - fields, meadows, forests, swamps, deserts, tundra and taiga even though it dominates man, who is in big machine sits for the first time. I first drove Tatra in about 10 years, it was the old T805, and then I still did not even reach the pedals but despite that, I enjoyed the ride beautifully and still like to remember :) Unfortunately, today that's not it .. Tatra is sold and Design slowly fading :( I'm afraid that T815/7 was the last Tatra that was really Tatra ..
Nice video! This reminds me that Tatra is a real heavy duty truck - you can REALLY do this stuff with ordinary Tatra of the same setup. Unlike many other brands - just watch the videos online and look for details: I.e. the movement between the cab and deck. Most of other truck when exposed to such terrain prove so little torsion resistance, that they would breake appart within few years or even months... I.e. watch "China's super-military cross-country truck" and see how it is twisting.

I am Czech and I am fkin proud of my country.
Its because of suspension construction - and the fact the wheels are connected using solid axles to the backbone. If you look around youtube for the tatra backbone concept it will explain (or its easy to see) why.
I love these trucks, they're seldom mentioned in western media. The 8x8 looks like it could go anywhere. Would it rival a Unimog?

In terrain it outperforms a MAN (but has lower HP so slightly slower) and it has the same performance offroad as Ural but lasts much longer and gives a much smoother ride.

@halloeffect Just use google. There is no "universal" shop but you can find it in many countries beside standard trucks. Its not that expensive. You can find them starting about 8000 euro. Mostly Tatra 815

E' semplice il primo numero corrisponde al quantitativo delle ruote del veicolo, il secondo numero corrisponde alle ruote che sono collegate al motore grazie alla trasmissione, in questo caso 10 x 8 vuol dire che su 10 ruote 8 sono collegate al motore e le restanti 2 sono solo di appoggio.

Not the last word in wheel suspension. To be honest, I'd have bet a few bugs that there are no manufacturers left to build pendulum axles!
LCdrDerrick I think last one to build pendulum suspention was the brazilian manifecture Engesa. witch no longer exist.

I like tatra, but I don't understand one thing. The benefit of the swing arm is the lack of a U joint, but why have a swing arm on the steering axles? why not just the rear? I mean front axles have to have U joints anyway. Is there a particular advantage to the current layout?

@spartus09 There isnt many trucks witch can copy with Tatra off road. Weak point is of course weight, Tatra is a heavy duty truck, purpose-built for off-roading. These trucks are also very rough - Working offten for +20 years in extreme conditins. The only real competition are russian...

Hlavně že pro naši armádu nakupujeme auta v zahraničí. Není nad podporu domácí produkce a nad úspornost a kvalitu.
@spartus09 Off terrain - MAN and Ural have no chance, on road they are mostly the same but i assume MAN is more comfortable inside cabin since its priority is road and comfort.
