  • Sure, "White Christmas" is more famous, but this is my favorite song on the Bing Crosby Christmas album.
I was looking for this on UA-cam, didn't find it except where somebody stuck a microphone to their speakers, so I uploaded it myself. The audio track on this video is taken directly from an original copy of the 1963 pressing of the "Merry Christmas" (White Christmas) Bing Crosby album, Decca DL-8128. I sampled it directly into my studio editor at the highest possible uncompressed rate. The video itself, of course, is of my Magnavox 1966 model Astro-Sonic cabinet-style record player.
You might think that "echo" effect is from the Astro-Sonic, but alas, no. 1963 was the year Decca fiddled with the "Merry Christmas" album by experimenting with releasing it in stereo. The result was for most of the album Bing sounds as if he is singing in the shower, without the water on. Later releases, including the special edition released just this year, have wisely returned to the mono versions.
There are some rumors, however, that even the new remasters from September 2014 will never sound exactly like they did when Bing sang them in the 40's and 50's, because the master copies of his songs were most likely destroyed in the 2008 Universal Studios fire. (No proof, that is just the buzz, given where the fire occurred. Universal has not yet admitted to the loss or confirmed that the masters still exist.)
Anyway, I love this song and am glad that because of the Internet it will never truly die.
