I grew up with these movies, especially this one but I find the designs of the villains terrifying. But I’ve like not seen a kids movie without the blatantly scary design of villains, otherwise they’d not get who is the villain (other than frozen, which Elsa is kinda the misunderstood villain and hans is the real villain, they look human to say the least)
Why did it take me all these years to realize when Anneliese says, "But I'd rather be in my library reading science books all day" is just her wanting to hang out with Julien
Honestly I don't think it is. She seems to, in the brief moments that we see, genuinely enjoy learning about science. Sure, we can say that's just because Julian is her teacher but ngl it's hard to fake love for science lol I think it's something that she's genuinely interested in and having Julian as the one person who supports her in having those passions is what brings them closer together, rather than her liking the subject just because she likes him.
Look, I'm 24 years old. I'm objectively too old to watch the old Barbie movies. But Barbie Rapunzal and Barbie Mermadia are unironically still two of my favorite movies.

I CANNOT believe you completely skipped over the seranade Annica does for her cat about how she loves him just the way he is. My mom straight up stil sings that to me sometimes and I'm in my 20s now
Yup. And Kelly Sheridan, the voice of Barbie most grew up in is also the English VA for Sango in Inuyasha. Oh and Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) sang the theme song for Barbie and the Pegasus.
Also the guy that did the music for a lot of the Barbie movies (Arnie Roth) is also the same guy who's been directing/arranging the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds concerts
To give a little context to the "just like me" serenade between the two of them- they recognize the chasm of privilege between them, but the bridge that binds them together is being unhappy in the life that they are in and wanting freedom from it but still choosing to do the right thing. That's what Erica was meaning when she said I am a girl like you.
Thank you for putting that so eloquently. The number one complaint I hear about this movie is that people don't understand the song I Am A Girl Like You. Yes the song starts with them comparing situations, but they also include how they feel about their situations. If you combine that with their conversation before the song (about the arranged marriage and servitude) and what they sang about in the previous song, Free, it makes sense that they are similar. They both have responsibilities that stand between them and their dreams and feel deeply about it.
Thank you!! so many people completely miss the mark when they hear that song, I think it might be because they don't expect a Barbie movie to have so much depth so they don't consider things as deeply. They obviously know that they aren't the same due to their living circumstances, but they are the same in choosing responsibility over freedom/happiness. It brings them together because they understand each others' internal struggles despite coming from two very different backgrounds.
I also find it funny that people say Annalise is being blind to her privilege by saying she’s just like Erika, but also that she’s bragging when she talks about the life of a princess. Annalise and Erika are both clearly aware of the difference in their situation, but they’re bonded by a sense of responsibility and duty that has trapped them in a circumstance they’re unhappy with. P.S. if Erika had said “I’m just like you” and Annalise was like “Actually I’m rich so no” that would be insane like of course she agrees
Thank you! I can't tell if they're purposely misunderstanding it bc it's funnier to frame it in the most surface level possible, or if people really struggle this much with media literacy in a kids movie. You all said it best so I don't have much to add. But I agree with the person who said they may just not expect any depth in a Barbie movie so they don't bother trying to see it. What's that Annaliese said about the geode? "Unassuming on the outside, but a treasure within". That's this movie in a nutshell.
i just loved how calm the narrator was when she said "the kingdom was now bankrupt" it gets me every time Edit: thanks so much for all the likes i have never got this many before
You missed the best bit of the movie the credits! Preminger staring at himself saying in the mirror "it's me looking at you looking me, lucky me" and Serafina terrified to do the roof jump and the stunt cat keeps 'dying' and says to get her agent on the phone. Master piece 🤣
Oh, Alex... Just wait until you see the animated elephant on the Island Princess movie. Or the dogs in Diamond Castle. Or EVERYONE in Barbie Diaries. Barbie animators knew how to design and animate the classic Barbie and nothing else lol
i feel like annalise's song lyric fits well to explain her own plight. "You may think that im so lucky, that I have so many things. Im realising that every present comes with strings"
Yeah I think people forget...Princesses don't really hold any real power, and are mostly just used as pawns to be married off and exploited. I mean she was literally about to get forcefully married to a guy when she clearly didn't want to be, I'd hardly say her life is easy.
PLEASE, early 2000 Barbie movies introduced me and a whole generation to the ballet bangers! I'm obsessed with Tchaikovsky as an adult because of those movies! QUALITY, CULTURE!
The princess switch and the parent trap are based off a novel by Erich Kästner "Lisa and Lottie" (literally called Parent trap in the UK and Australia). Twins separated at birth who aim to reunite their parents. The princess and the pauper is based on the fairy tale "The prince and the pauper" Two little boys that look alike despite both having two parents and not being related. Basically doppelgangers. Two different concepts.
Please keep doing these. We really need Mermaidia, Fairytopia, Swan Lake, Rapunzel, the 12 dancing princesses, and the magic of the Pegasus, and omg what about Barbie and her sisters in a Pony Tail just bc of the title 😭🤣
I loved Princess and the Pauper as a child, and together with 12 Dancing Princesses, Nutcracker, Rapunzel, and Swan Lake, it will probably always be one of my favourite Barbie movies. And the music was great during the classics. I mean the score. It just wasn't the same anymore when they switched to modern Barbie and Pop songs.
I love these movies and no one can ever convince me they are anything other than masterpieces. The animation definitely shows its age, but the stories are just so enjoyable
This one is my fav but i also love Barbie and the diamond castle as well as Barbie and the 12 dancing princesses. Waiit and honestly barbie as the island princess.
@@xeecstasy3183 oh my gosh how could I forget about the 12 dancing princess I had the CD PC game it was awesome I loved that movie and game and the other Barbie game I had was Barbie secret agent it was the best!!! I’m a grown woman but I would still play that game if I could
The old Barbie movies had so much heart in them that I had no trouble looking past the bad animation bahaha Also it was the early 2000s when 3D animation was sorta new so I'm giving them a pass 😅
They did it so they could break the suspense of disbelief. It helps assuage viewers that we're not watching an actual thing that happened. It's fictional and the actors are fine, they're just playing roles. You get the same effect from the final bow in theatre.
Its the whole barbie saga backstory. Where all these classic barbie movies are actually just directed and filmed in the actual barbie universe. Where the actual barbie is acting in all these movies.
Barbie: "Ive always loved you" Julian: "Ive been keeping a wig replica of your hair for years and made a replacement for you in a day". Match made in heaven.
When I watched this movie as an adult I realized the score and song orchestrations were WAY better than they had any right to be. Glad someone else noticed too😂
I rewatched all the movies that came out (up to 2022 at least) and honestly, you are so right! All the songs for the earlier movies are great and the new titles need to step up their game. Not that the newer ones don't have any good songs, but they DEFINITELY strike out more often
@@areetablack5301 having classically trained singers (like julie stevens for erika and alessandro juliani for julian) also helps a lot and gives it more of a musical theatre feel.
These movies formed my entire personality as a child. To this day I unironically listen to the soundtracks from some of these films. Core memories for sure.
I have made "But in my head, I'm back in bed. Snuggle up and sleeping late" of Erika a mantra for when I'm tired... XP I just can't help it. It is just my everyday mood.
Okay yes Annaliese did tell Erica about her comfortable life after just hearing her talk about her depressing one buuuuut she didn't want to talk about it and did read the room, but Erica *did* ask and encouraged her to go on when Annaliese was clearly reluctant about it.
Exactly I feel like people really don't give Annaliese enough credit. They hear Erika's story and immediately compare her to Ann. It's messed up, Ann didn't CHOOSE to be born as a princess the way Erika didn't choose to be born poor. Ann is shown to be kind and compassionate. Ann doesn't brag or boast about her comfort and while she is, I'm sure, grateful for it, she doesn't need it or ask for it. I don't think that warrants people saying that she should just shut up and be happy and not be allowed to complain or have any wishes or even that she should reject what she's been given. She is already a generous person. They ignore the parts about Anns life that might be hard, like studying too much, maintaining a royal demeanor, royal responsibilities like social meetings, and having responsibility over a whole kingdom which leave her with little time for hobbies or fun just like Erika. Both want something more than what they have and didn't choose the life they live, they each have issues albeit different but that's not to say that one's struggle is less than the other. Yet some people choose to side with Erika just because she's poor. They should follow Erika's example and be more accepting and kind. She never makes the princess feel bad for what she has and instead understands her issues and finds someone she can relate to inside the princess. Erika is an amazing person and people should strive to be like her.
@@dude53 But Analliese's reaction didn't even make sense. Erika is a slave to debt, complaining about how hard she works, and Annaliese says her life is really easy in response. Idk what to believe. Was Annalliese bragging? Was Annaliese stating facts? Was she implying that she herself is extremely privileged to highlight how unfortunate Erika is? The song doesn't say.
@@rubenaalexander5007 Literally just telling her what her life is like because Erika did it first. As the comment above pointed out Ann wasn't sure if she should share because, I think it's safe to assume, she's conscious it could make Erika feel bad. Then Erika herself tells her to go ahead.
@@rubenaalexander5007 plus I think she spoke about breakfast because that's what Erika sang about which just happened to perfectly illustrate Erika's struggles. While for Ann it doesn't, still that's not to say Ann doesn't have any struggles whatsoever.
This brings me back to when I was 4. I had a talking Bibble plushie. I loved Bibble. My mom hated him with a passion. Mom says now that Bibble would talk even when he was turned off and didn't have batteries. I distinctly remember asking her "mommy Bibble won't talk to me anymore!" And she acted like she didn't know what happened. Years later she admitted to ripping the entirety of his voicebox and wires out, filling the gap with extra stuffing and sewing him back up. I'm still not sure if I've fully forgiven her for what she did to Bibble but being an adult now I at least understand why she did it. Rip Bibble

Starting your Barbie adventure with Princess and the Pauper is a bold choice. I won’t say they’re all downhill from there, but they’re pretty much all downhill from there. You’ve peaked before you’ve even begun. Edit: maybe you’ll revisit it after you’ve gotten more under your belt and realize what a gem it is compared to many of the other Barbie movies.
@@charissadubin9355 Oh! I absolutely love Rapunzel as well! That's why I said "pretty much all". Rapunzel and a couple others were specifically in my mind.
I think Island Princess and 12 Dancing Princesses can also measure up. 3 Musketeers and Diamond Castle are up there too, but not top tier. Of the newer ones (they're a separate category), Princess Adventure, Fashion Fairytale, and Princess Charm School were pretty good, but not the level of Princess and the Pauper
I'm 26, but Princess and the Pauper and Magic of the Pegasus are still my all-time favorite Barbie movies, and I'd sometimes still rewatch them for a lil pick-me-up. 😅
My favorite part of this movie as a kid was the card scene. "I happen to know you got a 5 of hearts." "You mean you cheated!" "Yeah! I mean, no..." Me and my brother reinact that scene all the time to this day.
Listen. As a 31yo who never got to watch the barbie movies as a kid, it's been my adult dream to watch them but I'm too embarrassed. If Alex does all 40ish of them, my life will be one step closer to completion. This was fantastic.
I absolutely love all of the encouragement to just watch them! I'm one of those "kidults" who buys those mini craft toys and slime, so I'm already partially embarrassed by that lol I'll have to watch them anyway. You're all right!
This movie was my freaking childhood. My sister has the same name as the protagonist so it was special to her, we had the dolls, the carriage, Saraphina. It also told me that I prefer smart, devoted guys in Julian. I got a little defensive there for a second, as in Presenger (I don’t know how to spell his name) his plan was to frame Julian and Erika for the princess’s murder, which actually might’ve worked, the queen was very naive. But you also pointed out something I never noticed, which was the freaking SPIDER HORSE OH MY GOSH. And you killed me with the gene pool jokes 😂. I would love if you did more, this was awesome. Thanks, Alex!
fun fact: i'm from Brazil, and here they translated The Princess Switch to "A Princesa e a Plebeia", which is also the exact brazilian title of this Barbie movie. So when Netflix announced The Princess Switch, everybody went bonkers thinking it was live action Princess and the Pauper starring Vanessa Hudgens
The early Barbie movies truly, unironically contributed to my love of classical music and pursuit of it into my adult life, they will always hold a special place in my heart. Also this sneakily ties in well with the teen drama tv show coverage; the voice actor for Julian is the actor for Sinclair in The 100 and Dr. Cerberus on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina!
Same!!!! I used to want to be a ballerina because I loved the Tchaikovsky songs from the barbie movies (and classic Disney too because of sleeping beauty). He's still my favorite classical composer but Bach is a close second followed up by Beethoven. Sadly I am not a ballerina but I'm still utterly mesmerized by classical music when it plays
As a person who has rewatched a couple of Barbie movies at two in the morning with couple of my friends, I indeed agree that Barbie movies are insane. A very insane part of my childhood memory that I will never forget. 😌😌
I was the exact opposite of the intended audience of that movie and my sister was the only reason I ever watched it, but Princess and the Pauper is THE GOAT. The human villains were the best.
I was obsessed with these movies when I was a kid. The original ones, and I had the Annalise and Erica barbies that could sing together! My fave was rapunzel, Swan lake and the nutcracker. Can't believe I still remember that!
I don’t know if any other film series has done it before 2000s but the bloopers of the Barbie movies played before the credit rolls was like my first exposure to Actor AU.
I'm impressed that you basically managed to remove the entire, non-stop score from this film without warping the vocals 😂 Also, at 24, this is still genuinely one of my favourite films! It's a masterpiece!
@@Kanahani Ah, fair! I've had training in sound engineering, and it used to take so long for me to get clean vocal audio like that (I may just not have been very good), and to hear that there's now an AI that just does it is heartbreaking 😂😂
In all honesty the old Barbie movies are better than the newer ones for me......like why is she suddenly becoming a super hero with supper powers from a butterfly??? classics like the 12 dancing princesses, mariposa and fairytopia are still the best for me🤧
@@silvergust Sure but I guess it's more about the way it is done. I think many people have the impression that they put more thought behind the magical powers of the old movies or just into the world building in general even if they were still rather simple.
I agree 100%. I stopped actively watching new Barbie movies when "Pearl Princess" came out back in 2014 (I was 8 back then) and have watched every one before that and I gotta say the artstyle on the newer ones is so bad. I will always love and cherish the old Barbie movies. My kids are gonna watch them!! I dont care if theyre boys or girls theyre gonna give em a try.
I recently took a look at Princess and the Pauper, Rapunzel, and 12 Dancing Princesses and felt the same joy as I felt in my childhood - and I’m 24. In Rapunzel, Gothel is still really creepy, especially now that I as an adult realize that this version of Gothel is also a manipulator and probably also a gaslighter compared to Disney’s version of Gothel.
I really hope when Alex is doing the very first Barbie movie (The Nutcracker) he will watch the making-of as well. Simply because they actually hired professional ballet dancers and used motion tracker for the dances in the movie. It is so beautiful. And Arnie Roth, the conductor of the first two movies, has been conducting the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds concerts for years now. :3
This movie walked so that The Princess Switch could RUN. Princess and the Pauper is iconic in every way from the songs to the animation to the characters (specifically Preminger) and I really hope you cover even more of these movies. (I recommend going with either Swan Lake or Magic of Pegasus after this!)
I actually love this movie for how they dont weight their problems and are just like : "yeah, we both are not happy in our current life situation". These "whos life sucks more" competitions can get really annoying xD
It's SO unfortunate that you had to cut the music from this video. This is a huge nostalgia trip for me and I wish I could hear it in its full glory. Being a kid and being that it was early 2000's when this was made, I could forgive the poor animation and interesting choices they made. I just remember absolutely loving the songs and the characters, my favorite being "The Cat's Meow."
Fun fact: Guy that did the music for a lot of the Barbie movies (Arnie Roth) is also the same guy who's been directing/arranging the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds concerts
I find it so funny when Anneliese is singing abt how her morning goes and then suddenly Ericka sings “I’m just like you” LIKE GIRL NO 💀 EDIT: pls this is a joke I love this movie growing up and YES I know well enough that even when as a kid watching this I do know what the song is about and how even though they are different social classes they both want to be free in doing in whatever they want.
I think it's really because they both wish they had a different life. Of course annelise is much more fortunate than Erica but they both want to be "free".
I love this movie because even if one has less than the other they still aren’t able to have the freedom to do the things they want to do. I especially love it when Ericka said that. Since even though she is in debt she can understand even someone like a princess can have struggles too. So I’d say they are exactly alike and I love that.
I didn't watch most of the Barbie movies as a kid, but my generation grew up on them. I don't know whether we were taking our cues from them or whether they just had their finger on the pulse of what little girls love to do, but the plot of this is EXACTLY the type of thing my friends and I would've played as eight year olds. Political crisis (some nonsense because we're eight and gold is the most important thing we can think of), evil authoritarian figures we have to outsmart, fancy dresses, unwanted suitors, rags to riches.
Growing up my dad would actually request to watch this movie even when me and my sister wanted to watch a different barbie movie. It was his favourite one and he still sings the main song to this day, i think he liked it even more than we did 😂
My 4 year old is OBSESSED with that Barbie Dolphin Magic movie, so I can’t wait for Alex to do that one. It’s got everything…weird colored dolphins, Ken being a doofus, random ass songs….it’s perfect.
Did anyone else get the singing Barbie dolls of Annalise and Erica and worked with a sibling to time it so that the harmonies happened at the exact right moment? It took us about 30 minutes. It was frikkin AWESOME. 😅😍
To be fair the Barbie movies actually pioneered a lot of the 3d motion capture technology for the ballet movies. They had the Newyork ballet create entirely new ballets for the 12 dancing princesses.
I love that Erika’s mom, while being in the movie past the four minute mark, was in it so little that you thought that both of her parents were dead lmao.
2000s Barbie movies are the best thing that has happened to humanity. They have great music, interesting characters and a story you can actually get into. Fact the animation is a bit creepy but definitely Iconic!
You're finally doing Barbie movies. I couldn't be happier. Barbie was my childhood, it shaped me into the person I am today. I had always been fond of the morals each movie taught. The Princess and the Pauper, my sister and I could respectively play Erika (me) and Annalise (my sister). Preminger will always be ionic because he's voiced by yhe incredible Martin Short. Fond memories. Plus Julian is voiced by Alessandro Juliani, who also voiced L in Death Note.

Serafina had the best line in the movie: “No, I am not okay. My mistress is inside with two hooligans and I've got dirt, dirt on my bum!”

Yeah I think people forget...Princesses don't really hold any real power, and are mostly just used as pawns to be married off and exploited. I mean she was literally about to get forcefully married to a guy when she clearly didn't want to be, I'd hardly say her life is easy.

The princess switch and the parent trap are based off a novel by Erich Kästner "Lisa and Lottie" (literally called Parent trap in the UK and Australia).

Basically doppelgangers.
Two different concepts.

But like, dude, where's your sympathy, seamstress lady who only gets like two scenes' worth of dialogue?
Okay yes Annaliese did tell Erica about her comfortable life after just hearing her talk about her depressing one buuuuut she didn't want to talk about it and did read the room, but Erica *did* ask and encouraged her to go on when Annaliese was clearly reluctant about it.
Good point !!
I can’t wait to see Alex’s reaction to the code word “bibble” 😳😂
Rip Bibble
@@OmegaTheSillyWolf I had something similar to that but with my furby that would love to randomly make noises at night and I understood my family’s trauma from the how freaky my furby would act, especially blinking it’s eyes when it’s not even supposed to. This movie was my freaking childhood. My sister has the same name as the protagonist so it was special to her, we had the dolls, the carriage, Saraphina. It also told me that I prefer smart, devoted guys in Julian.

I find it so funny when Anneliese is singing abt how her morning goes and then suddenly Ericka sings “I’m just like you” LIKE GIRL NO 💀
EDIT: pls this is a joke I love this movie growing up and YES I know well enough that even when as a kid watching this I do know what the song is about and how even though they are different social classes they both want to be free in doing in whatever they want.
That wasn’t the point of the song 😭😭 it was just about the freedom

The point of the song is that they both have dreams of being somewhere else and be somebody else even though they have very different backgrounds
Same! I loved that movie.
@@adritasarwaradritasarwar3373 literally all of the songs from the old barbie movies were soooooo good
@@adritasarwaradritasarwar3373 Oh yeah you're so right also 2 voices 1 song and Were gonna find it believe is actually pretty great too
My 4 year old is OBSESSED with that Barbie Dolphin Magic movie, so I can’t wait for Alex to do that one.
CORE MEMORY
This was hilarious! MAKE MORE BARBIE CONTENT PLEASE
(you should especially cover the first era's movies)
As a 27 year old man, I am very nostalgic for these movies. I loved these movies and this one had such a great soundtrack.
To be fair the Barbie movies actually pioneered a lot of the 3d motion capture technology for the ballet movies. They had the Newyork ballet create entirely new ballets for the 12 dancing princesses.
That's so extra of them I love it 💅
I love that Erika’s mom, while being in the movie past the four minute mark, was in it so little that you thought that both of her parents were dead lmao.
I assumed they WERE dead😂
She WASN'T DEAD?????
she WASN'T??? WHERE WAS SHE
WHAT?? where is she later in the movie? 😭
What do you mean Erika's mother isn't dead??
17:16 I’m rolling! I never noticed the horse until you pointed it out 😭😭
2000s Barbie movies are the best thing that has happened to humanity. They have great music, interesting characters and a story you can actually get into. Fact the animation is a bit creepy but definitely Iconic!
My farts are better than Alex’s farts
If nothing else, I recommend the Twelve Dancing Princesses. Hands down my favourite Barbie Movie of all time.
