what a waste of precious helium that will soon be extinguished. there is no sustainable helium. we waste it as we do most things without a care about it being endangered. Guess you will have to blow them up by hand when helium is gone for good. we think who cares till its gone. don't boo hoo when there is no more.
People actually were self righteous know it alls back then that actually did things for the hell of it. They did have to be blessed by virtue signalling on social media in order for it to be done.
What could possibly go wrong...?! Imagine fighting for your life by keeping your head above the water and watching the rescuers circulating while your head is lost among hundreds of floating baloons.
I like how the reporter at the end reassured everyone that since nobody knows where the balloons in the lake went, that that meant they were no longer a threat to fish and wildlife. That's toddler-level logic and awareness.
Anything to amuse ourselves selfishly. The theme played out over and over again w/o regard to the environment, or any endangerment. Will we never learn?
WOW. I had never heard of this. The balloons being released was pretty amazing to watch....I would have loved to have seen that in person! Too bad the Guinness Book didn’t recognize it. ☹️ New intro and outro....well done, I like it!! Keep your videos coming....onward and upward. UNITED WAY😉
It was crazy 😜. I was very young but my family had a hand in the organization. I remember it being an exciting day, then suddenly a very hectic day. I am tinkering with intro and outro, I am glad you noticed. I’ll have a few more options in the next few videos. Also, I’ll have some original videos coming in August. Thank you so much for your support✌️❤️
Derelict Doug So, you were actually there to see it then? That’s so cool! I don’t remember hearing about any of this, I was still a kid...but I don’t think I was quite as young as you if you were VERY YOUNG. lol So, yeah,..thanks for sharing that.....A piece of history I knew nothing about. I’m learning a lot from you. Can’t wait to see what’s next!!
Michele J I was at the event but was too little to remember. I know of it more from the family talking about it. I am so glad to show you and other folks new things (or in this case old things).
I'm guessing most of the balloons started drifting back down to the ground and were everywhere? I know most of them landed in the lake because it started raining and that was bad.
It were the brainless eighties. When people like Hulk Hogan and Gordon Gekko were heroes. When children's TV-series were about Vietnam veterans blowing things up. Apart from the constant threat of mutual atomic destruction, it was a very happy time.
Hey, so I'd never heard of this before, and enjoyed your story. Crazy how times have changed. 1986 is the year I graduated, and people really weren't environmentally aware at all. It was a rather selfish time for society, as people couldn't see how they, as individuals, could contribute to a much bigger problem. 1.5 mil 🎈 is a bit out there, tho. I get why they did it, needing funding from united Way and all, but yikes. As for the outranged person going on about helium - it happened nearly 40 years ago. A lot has changed since then. Why let your blood pressure rise over something you probably either weren't alive for, or weren't old enough to affect the outcome of it. I mean, did *you* know that helium was limited 40 years ago? Bigger environmental issue that started back then was the amazon rain forest getting burned off by hundreds or thousands of acres. Basically, it was happening as fast as poor people could make it happen because their government promised them land if they could stake a claim to it. Burning it down was the easiest way to clear it to start farming, and what-not. We knew back then how it was affecting our world, yet it continued unchecked for a very long time. Balloons like this, on this scale, we're very bad - in their hindsight. Two men possibly lost their lives because of it. And the laws changed afterward, and it hasn't happened again. Plus, they weren't rewarded with a world record standing for the debacle.
Wow that's a long time ago. The year I was born. :P Sounds like this would have been cool to see, but the environmental impact is just not worth it. I guess back then the environment was also less of a concern though. The gravity of our environmental impacts was not as well known as now. Those balloons (busted now I'm sure!) are probably floating in the sea even today.
Nope, no cancel culture, just good old-fashioned boycotts. They had a bigger and better outcome than this whole cancel culture baloney. If we forget the past, we are doomed to repeat mistakes.
Well , jeez- take it down to the TV station to claim Lots of fabulous prizes already! You think he was kidding, making that up , to mock that lady before stealing a big ol’kiss and leaving her to stagger off, dazed and confused? Times-a-wasting! I’d hurry before they forget!

Relax. Helium’s been here since before you were born. It’s not going anywhere
this event had no regard for anything or anyone other than self gratification. shame on you, Cleveland
Yes how did the guy not get in trouble
Agreed, it was a shame. It was a different time, but someone should have known better than to send out a million pieces of litter
Even if everything went to plan (as opposed to...people dying,), we'd probably still look back on this thinking, "Okay, but why tho?"

That’s so funny the way you put it. But also sadly true. It was a different time, things like this will not happen again for good reason.
We toed the balloons beyond the environment. They're no longer in an environment.
As cool as it looked, it certainly had drastic consequences.

Exactly. While the balloons are litter, they will biodegrade. But we will never get the helium back.
