What we need most is to teach the developers about planting the wrong species in tight developments. A lot of my work involves containing a tree when it is too close to the structures. When the alternative is removal, hard pruning is the only way. Also, the city where I work I imposes significant fees ((over 2k), to remove trees from planned communities. Your teaching is correct to help the tree. The issues we deal with often is poor placement. Another issue now is how the insurance companies are insisting that all foliage be cut over a roof. Cancellation if homeowner policies is ruining trees.
I agree that poor planning can lead to some very difficult situations. The insurance companies have it wrong if you have to cut to heavy some trimmers out there just use topping cuts and that is more of a risk than a natural growing branch. I've seen some videos where you had to do heavy pruning and I have to hand it to you even though you have to remove a lot you do your best at making the proper cut and when you walk away it looks natural. We had a massive double oak tree in our yard. Some tree trimmers came by and offered to trim some of the branches that were over the house. They climbed the tree using spikes. A few years later, there were black marks on the bark where they had climbed it with the spikes. We had to have the whole tree cut down.
Much respect for you and your true Arborist philosophy. I am not an arborist by trade but I have worked with and studied trees all my life and have learned good practices and techniques to care for the trees from good arborists like you and combining with my own for particular species of trees. Thank you for making this video and I appreciate your passion for your work and for healthy trees.
I completely agree with everything you’re saying. The toughest part is the clients that want what they want and not what’s best for the tree. I just go ahead and give them what they want because in business the customers always right unfortunately. But I do educate them and let them make that decision themselves after I educate them .
One thing I hate is the fact that a lot of clients don’t understand (or care for) proper pruning. Especially when some competitors are quite happy to advise that ‘It’ll be alright’. A lot of people just think you get ‘More bang for your Buck’ the more you take off. Still, it doesn’t change the fact that proper arborists should do a proper job.
Gotta teach the home owners who hire the no safety guys because it's half the price. We buy thousands of dollars in safety gear, equipment, and training, just for the druggie on the corner to under bid lol.
its a good practice to make a mulch bed or at least leave it dirt, around a new tree; when you are weed whacking you are looking for tall grass, so you tend to just hit the grass around a new tree, and if you really think they should just leave it, than you are forgetting they are payed to make the place look nice and mowed, and grass 3 feet high around all the small trees looks awful. and to those who think you are gonna kill the tree with mulch, how much mulch are you madmen using?!?!? its a layer of 2 maybe 3 inches no more, its just a buffer between the tree and the grass and makes it easier to spray. Is there any way to treat a tree that has been scraped by a mower Bino? I have a Japanese maple that I payed 125.00 for when it was 5 feet tall and now it maybe 14 feet tall but has a huge gaping hole in the side of it all originally started by the mower. Years ago tree pruners sprayed some type of black substance like paint but different on cut limbs.
No the most you can do is protect the trunk so it won't continue to happen and maybe it can callus some. That black paint is old technique and it does not help the tree it can actually cause more decay.
