My first visit to Pattaya and Thailand was in September 2004. I met up with a nice Thai lady and we hung out for several days. She was a great tour guide. One day we took a speed boat to the island. We went to a very quiet spot not crowded at all. It was not in the "city" part. Still were able to get food such as fried rice with shrimp, drinks etc. What a wonderful day. Since then I have been several times. Twice even took the ferry for the experience. The price is so cheap. Other times I took the speed boat with two of my friends and we split the cost so it is no big deal.
Not sure it is the best day trip but it is high on the list. A day trip to Nong Nooch botanical garden is high on the list. Million years crocodile stone park is pretty good too. Frankly for a walk about the top of Pattaya hill big buddha is great too. make sure to walk around the chinese pavillion which is just below the big buddha

You are not wrong about the speed boats. On thelast trip, I did my back in on the way to koh Larn, which spoiled my trip .
