    Great video. Concise and correct. I own a 2016 F type R and have a few items to add.
    There are 2? Several? Underbody cross braces that were made with cheap steel and will start to rust. Best to remove them, powder coat and paint to correct Jags cost cutting measure.
    Fuel injectors will clog because of the pops and burble tuning. Forum members recommend simply adding fuel injector cleaner occasionally before fill up to proactively address
    Speaking of the pops and burbles- I love being the a-hole in tunnels and can argue why you’d should always drive in dynamic mode BUT…that wonderful sound will prematurely ruin your catalytic converters and/or the O2 sensor. Replacing the cats can be expensive! I am now in the market for new cats so I speak from experience.
    Do not adhere to Jags recommended oil change interval. Change your oil!! Especially if you drive it hard!
    The rear diff fluid will also become like jello in consistency of you ignore it. Change that occasionally also.
    Some have complained about the hood alignment over time. It is a very large hood and the hinges have a little play. Opening and closing by yanking on only one side will invariable skew the hood and push it out of alignment causing uneven panel gaps. Always try to open and close from center applying equal and even pressure when opening and closing the hood.
    The Pirelli tires are super soft and will wear quickly. My rear tires started to bald at around 12,000 causing me to have to buy a new set. Expect to spend a few grand on tires every 15,000 to 25,000 miles if you want performance tires! I compromised and bought Bridgestone Potenzas treated for 30,000 miles. We’ll see.
    One more thing…the Jag has very low ground clearance making speed bumps, some driveways and parking lot barriers a menace. The under chin ‘spoilers’ will scrape and might also dislodge. Somehow, I lost a few screws that hold it in place and found that my center piece has been dragging essentially grinding one side down to a point! I guess what I’m saying is be aware of the scraping and occasionally check underneath. Hand tighten those screws - I think they are 7 mm hex. Good news is the replacement piece is available on EBay (oem!)for about $50 us.
    This is running long so I’ll wrap this up by stating I love my car and have driven it cross country as well as on several similarly long road trips! It is not very comfortable on loooong drives but I suffer with a smile because when I find that long deserted straight or that mountain twisty road this car is king!
    (Please forgive any grammatical errors of odd spellchecking as I posted this from my phone!)
    PS - this does not have aerodynamics that make the car feel planted over 130 mph - less if its is windy 😅 It gets light and squirrelly but I can confirm that it was still pulling at 187mph 😉

      I’m glad that you’re enjoying your car, and appreciate the tips with oil intervals and such. I feel your pain with the cats and I’ve had my share of fun with the hood alignment 😂 thanks again and happy driving!

      The first point about the braces/sub frame is VERY valid. When it rusts through, this car becomes a deadly weapon that can actually cause death on the roads at even moderate speeds...

    The older F-Type exhaust valves are controlled by Fuse 43 under the passenger’s feet. Pull out the fuse and they fail full open, which solves any squeak and adds a little more loudness.

    • @MrGB_UK
      @MrGB_UK  2 роки тому +10

      That's certainly one fix, and what a sound! I must admit, i do (rarely) like to have the option to close the exhaust valves. Sat on the motorway for example (if going on holiday), or early mornings around built up areas

    • @fgcpeak9591
      @fgcpeak9591 Рік тому +1

      I guess that's ok, but the active exhausts were created for a reason. Sometimes (in your quiet neighbourhood) you want to deaden the sound. That's why it's there.

    I am looking for my first F-Type and went to a Jag garage yesterday to view a 2015 3.0. It looked a bit ropey but on starting and leaving revs come down I heard the tell-tale signs of a mouse squeaking away from the exhaust. I walked away and found a much better 3.0 S at an independent. But thank you for this video. My child like nature of these things would have me not notice things like that. 👍

    I bought a 2016 f type with 35k miles on it. No rust, it was a florida car. I've now spent damn near 8 grand getting the seized injectors out of the head, the entire engine had to be taken out of the car. It was a 30 plus hour job. Not a spot of rust on the body but on the engine water was sitting and literally rusted the head off of many bolts on the engine. It's been a nightmare and I've been without my car for nearly 4 months taking it between independent and dealerships, its an extremely hard engine to work on. I wish I knew how common of a problem this really was cause I got screwed.

    Well, I had the squeaky exhaust valve, you can use copper grease to fix it and the knocking supercharger too which is the most expensive but not catastrophic, it just gets annoying and it's better to fix it as soon as can, around $1k for the job and the dreaded stick buttons you can clean with some hand/face lotion, not easy to clean, it takes patience but an easy fix.

    I viewed this video when it first came out, very informative and at the same time put me off buying an F Type, so many poor design issues coupled with the numerous reports of poor reliability. I thought I might go down the route of buying approved used from a main dealer but also have read about issues with warranty claims.This was a great shame as I had promised myself an F Type upon retiring. I ended up going for a used Porsche Cayman instead, and over a year of ownership have had no issues. However whenever I see an F Type on the road I am still blown away by the looks and classic design.

    My wife runs a 2013 V6 S F type convertible and the biggest problem we have had was the bank one injector 3 sticking / jamming open , lots of smoke and running terrible as you would expect,
    The issue is cheap made in Turkey Bosch plastic injectors , similar to Ford Focus ones, I changed all 3 injectors bank 1 on the drive in a couple hours , you need a cranked injector puller but was really no drama , oil change and back on the road , the only niggle is an intermittent fault code for Catalytic converter below efficiency that seems to be less regular now but ultimately I may need a second hand converter, the car has only done 20,000 miles so a bit disappointed with that fail at low mileage but overall an excellent car and great all round sports car that is also a relaxed grand tourer if you want , just take it out of sport 🤣

      I think if you've ever had a modified car you tend to do this on autopilot anyway. My car isn't even fast by comparison but it is modified in various ways and I'm often thinking about the noises and fixes I need to do but by no means are they serious. Knowing the problems on a car is a bit of a double edged sword. Every car has problems but when you understand them to the degree that these guys do you know what you're getting yourself in to and know how to tackle the problems, and maybe even how much they might cost ahead of time.

      @@LagunaLeonhart Well said and that makes great sense.

    • @LagunaLeonhart
      @LagunaLeonhart Рік тому +2

      @@ToddDolce this video definitely feels negative overall but I've watched a lot of other similar videos. The most common problems are very few. What I like about this vid is he explains each of them in detail. If you count the issues it's not actually that many. From what I've found it starts with which engine you want. If you want the all wheel drive version the issue with the seized injectors goes away because the bonnet vents are more spaced out. If you go for one 2017+ you likely have the new Y coolant pipe already installed. If you go for 2018+ you probably have the software update that reduces pops but prolongs the life of the cat and O2 sensor, but if not you can have it applied at jaguar. This looks like it can be over ridden if you don't like it by removing a fuse. If you want 2019+ you also have the added component in the cat which again lowers the pops and bangs. People report maybe a 5% sound change. Some of the issues are general wear and year and if you're an enthusiast you'll likely fix them yourself over time. The rusty cross brace under the car is something I'm trying to learn a bit about but people say you can remove it and have it powder coated somehow. All in all if you take the right Jag for you, take care of it (injector cleaner, LSD oil change regularly and normal oil change) and then add the fixes you want, you get a more refined car that shouldn't let you down.

    I have one of the oldest V8s, with an August 2013 in-service date. Its been sensational.
    Three issues:
    1. The large AGM battery weakens with short drives. A weak battery will trigger multiple faults. There are two solutions - trickle charge or charge at least every couple of weeks. Or, better, replace the 66lb AGM battery with a light weight LiFe battery that holds 13V, no problem. I installed a 6lb ATX-20-HD and ripped out the start/stop battery for a 72lb total weight savings.
    2. The cats cannot take the 2014-16 exhaust violence. They fail every ~20K miles. The US EPA warrants all emissions components to 8Y/80K miles. I went through 3 sets in 8 years at $4K per set, covered under warranty. After 8 years old, you either fork out the cash or weld in a set of stronger cats. I tried the 200 cell VelocityAP Sport Cats but hated the loud raspy sound. So I welded in a set of 400 cell cat-only replacements (from zzperformance). They were only $400 installed, they sound great, pretty close to the stock 600 cells in tone and are about 30% louder - perfect for me. They are holding up great, even with my 2 pulley tune. After 2016, Jag made these cars way too quiet, but that might fix this issue.
    3. Two rear wheel bearings (total with labor $1100), but probably my fault. I have 315/30 R888Rs with 15mm spacers on the rear wheels, since my 696HP tune spun Cup2s up to and including 5th gear. My car is RWD.
    My sticky buttons were awful, but cleaned up like new in ~2 hours with 70% isopropyl alcohol.
    Another thing I broke was a thin coolant line on top of the engine intake by leaning on it during a filter change. They get baked and brittle. That was $115.
    Hood alignment is tricky, but there are 6 screw adjustable stops that do a pretty good job, but you need to know they are there. I slipped a few washers under the plastic bumper bolts (revealed when hood is raised) to match the height to the leading edge of the hood perfectly. That also aligns the panel gap.

      Thanks for yet another great comment! I couldn't agree more with the battery. Mine lives on a trickle charger, for the exact reasons you have mentioned. I think that's a common trait of all high performance cars, and something I walked into with my eyes open at point of purchase. The Cats, again, I couldnt agree more. I've had one replaced and am waiting for the second to go. Again, something I knew of when purchasing the car and didnt want to compromise on the sound with the later, nerfed exhaust tone. Luckily I haven't had the sticky buttons due to the car being an '18 plate.

      Best thing for an F-Type is a LiFe racing battery. They save 60+ pounds and start the car faster with 13V vs 12.8V for the AGM. And LiFe voltage doesn’t sag much after sitting.

    I really appreciate your insight and honesty. People tend to be biased towards their cars and often overlook their fair share of deficiencies. I'm mechanically inclined and have always worked on my cars to the best of my ability. I've always wanted a V8 sports car but I just could never find the appeal to common sights like mustangs, chargers, and Camaros. Plus the obvious increased cost of ownership compared to an economy vehicle. However, when I discovered that Jaguar had a V8 sports car I instantly fell in love with it. The style, the powertrain, and that impeccable exhaust note. To me I needed all of those things to bring me to the fence of buying one. This video really gave me some piece of mind that these vehicles are not all bad and headaches they are sought to be. To me this car is well worth the cost and maintenance. Hopefully the market calms down a bit and I can find one at a good price soon.

    i've had my 2019 SVR for a little over 3 years now, only problem i've had so far was "gear fault" showing up. pulled over to the side of the road, turned the car off and back on, fault message never showed up again. i've had JLR and another garage who's very familiar to F Types check into the issue but they couldn't recreate it; this was a year and a half of owner ship and have put down a little over 10k miles into it. I use it as my daily and I've put in 16k miles into it, driving it up and down the canyons in California and had long trips with it driving to Vegas in 100 degree heat.
    another thing I've noticed while driving through the canyons is the understeer, just keep that in mind. other than that, i highly recommend this car over the R35 and the GT3.
