  • Filmed live in King's College Chapel, for broadcast at Easter 2021, this is William Byrd's (c.1540 - 1623) setting of words from Psalm 81, 'Sing Joyfully'. It is one of his most lively, vibrant and complex motets, interspersing dense polyphonic textures with moments of striking homophony. This piece is also perhaps the best example of Byrd's fusion of madrigalian musical style with sacred liturgical context.
Sing joyfully to God our strength; sing loud unto the God of Jacob!
Take the song, bring forth the timbrel, the pleasant harp, and the viol.
Blow the trumpet in the new moon, even in the time appointed, and at our feast day.
For this is a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.
    The King's Singers
    Patrick Dunachie - countertenor
    Edward Button - countertenor
    Julian Gregory - tenor
    Christopher Bruerton - baritone
    Nick Ashby - baritone
    Jonathan Howard - bass

I'm getting on in years now and have loved the distinctive Kings Singers sound since I was small. What could be better than a group that carries on that special sound yet each iteration also making it their own, and all the while bringing us beautiful fresh pieces than this? Don't forget to add New Zealand to your itinerary again sometime...

An amazing piece by an amazing composer, sung by an amazing ensemble. Love the perfect blend of your voices plus the beautiful background of King's College Chapel with its wonderful acoustics. Loved hearing you guys sing live in Indiana (USA) at Goshen College last year!
