Dam, I remember after leaving my abusive husband and being put into a shelter. We had all kinds of rules, and the only handouts were donated clothes. Food, had to purchase our own. Showers were 10 minutes. Rooms were shared with others and we had chores. I didn't complain because me and my kids had a roof over our heads, and we were safe.
