Perhaps its size and the bite / incisors gave it an effective defence and deterrent against the sabre tooth cats and terror birds. I saw capybara in Brazil and although they were quite docile I wouldn't want to annoy one! Imagine a - possibly highly aggressive - rodent almost the size of a hippo!
