Samson SX 1200 Professional Power Amplifier. Better than SMPS breakdown crap

- The SX 1200 is 300 watts rms into 8 ohms. Upgraded 3300 uf capacitors to 10000 uf. Upgraded 35amp rectifiers to 50amp. Power supply recapped more as a project, rather than needing it.
These amplifiers are discontinued now, in favor of producing a bunch of SMPS breakdown crap, that is not even capable of Sine wave power any more.
New amplifiers are rated to 22ms burst specifications. A 22ms burst is not even capable of reproducing any music signal at all, yet it is used in power rating specifications of all SMPS amplifiers.
Lieing about specifications is one thing, but using specifications deliberately, that are known not to reproduce a music signal is another all together. Sadly, Many who buy these SMPS amps falsly believe they have more power then they really do, and that the power is all useful.
500ms burst power is what is required to reproduce the entire musical frequency range, at the MINIMUM. A full three seconds burst power , at the MINIMUM, for electro dynamic bass. With this in mind, you now know why the industry wants to keep standards that overstate the usefulness of Power ratings.
The world is now full of AMP TESTERS, who are trying to make money measuring power amps to see if they meet specifications. Even if they do, this means nothing as current specification standards, do not reproduce a music signal. You may as well be looking at the specifications for a toaster.
When not Abused, toroidal amplifiers tend to last forever, While SMPS amps make recycling electronics, a necessity, rather than an option.
Very nice explanation. Thank you.
I have an sx1800 , might look into doing som upgrades as well. Thanks again from Holland.
Kbpc 5010w is the largest rectifier you can fit. Any capacitor up to 70mm in height. JCCON capacitors are available direct from china on Aliexpress.
@@johnplayerson5906 thank you very much for your advise and video. I just completed my rack which now consists of: SX2400 , SX1800, SX1200.
Will test them now as is. Will upgrade in a later state.
@@vishS14 Should be a nice little setup!!. I will be posting a video of the Stanton A1800. Basically the same as the Samson sx 1800 , cerwin vega cv 1800
what do use the sx1800 to play
@@leopaulevans7573 i use the pre-outs of an Onkyo receiver to the SX1800 to run a set of Infinity Kappa 100 speakers. They have twin 13" woofers each, thats why normal receivers have a hard time driving these speakers. The SX1800 doesn't even break a sweat.
Man i used to own of those (same model) ran it down to 2 ohms on 2 cv car subs and it blew something inside so i decided to take it to a repair shop near my house and donated it along with 2 other power amps (i dont remember those) lol.. But i do wish to find it and add it to my collection of amps i now have. I loved it!!! And i agree that smps amps are crappp!!
The reason you blew the amplifier is because the Samson SX series does not have a limiter. So if you push it too close to its max power you are asking for failure. Plus this is a bottom of the line amplifier, not a power house king. For extreme use you need to use the top of line models from this line, ie sx 2800 and 3200. Using any amp for two ohm use is also gauranteed suicide.
@@johnplayerson5906 yeah that happened a while ago.. I wasnt really aware with ohmage at that time. The only amp i know that won't fail me is the crown mt amps, i own 2 now.
@@christianmontesino171 The crowns have a very good built in limiter to stop clipping which is the main reason any amp fails, along with overdriving it , (Abuse). The best way to not need a limiter at all, by buying an amplifier capable of doulbe what you intend to use.
This amplifer is already 12 years old. How do I know?, Code dates on Capacitors inside the unit. It is weird that samson chose to omit the limiter circuit, but at the same time. this omission is why they rated the amplifier for 4 ohm min stereo load, while all other manufacturers with limiters, rated the same amplifier for 2 ohms. The limiter is a huge protection circuit, but the amplifier can still be ruined , overdriving it long enough.
@@johnplayerson5906 cool man 👍.. That is really good to know. i have a carvin and a alto amp that both have limiter switch on the back. I ask myself the other day ( are these switches for reducing the volume when the amp reaches clipping) yeah so i wasnt to sure. But yeah i also see you have really big amps with huge transformer.. I dont know about other people but i like my amps big and heavy!
Also not sure how back the crown amp goes but do you think i need to replace the capacitors on those? Considering they are probably over 25 years old and maybe driving hard giving that i am not the first owner and dont know theyre history.
@@christianmontesino171 If i liked the amplifer and wanted to keep them running, for sure. It does not really cost a lot if you do it yourself. God help you if you pay anyone to do it.
Great video! I'm looking at buying a 2400 and didn't know these didn't have clipping protection.
My speakers are rated 550w @ 8 ohms. Other than not running full gain how can I protect my system
You could buy some stereo dbx compressor limiters, and manually set it so the amlifier never clips. Other brands of limiters are out there.

Good afternoon, I'm looking for the repair diagram for the Mackie M1200 and Samson SX1200 amplifiers. Do you happen to have those diagrams? If you have them, can you give me a copy?

I am using a Samson SX1800 in a home setting. The fans are too loud for my liking. I would like to try your mod of wiring the fans in series to make them run quieter. How did you rewire the fans?
run a wire from the positve of one fan to the negetive of the other fan. Then take the positive and negetive leads that are left and hook them up to one of the fan plugs. Then plug in to one side. Both fans should run at half speed.

Is it possible to change the voltage in this amplifier from 115V to 230V?
They can all be changed to 240 vac on the power switch pcb, in the front. 2 wires to move
I'm trying to figure out if the SX1200 can drive a 4ohm load in bridge mode. The manual says 8ohm min load, but then on page 10, they show 1 speaker with 4ohm min. is there any reason to not try and run a 300watt RMS 4ohm rated sub in bridge mode?
The Most likely reason Samson supports their amplifiers from 4 ohm stereo or 8 ohm bridge minimum, while other manufacturers of the same model, (internally) support 4 ohm bridged operation and 2 ohm stereo, is mostly because they never included a limter on the Samson sx series. I would suggest doubling up your subs in series for an 8 ohm final load.
Other than that , there really is no reason on cannot bridge into a 4 ohm load. Personally I would never do it weather or not any amplifier states it. The result is faster wear and tear... and risk of blowing the amplifier. There would be much less risk with an amplifier that had a limiter. IF you do it, just make sure you are NEVER lighting the clip lights
@@johnplayerson5906 got it. Thanks for the advice!
how good is the samsung sx3200 model .. what do you think friend
I have four of them, Awesome amplifiers that were sold under the b52 us 4000, American audio v4001, and Hpa a3200 model names as well
John Playerson do you think it actually sends the rms watts it claims to have?
@@jhonnyflores8425 Without issue. There is no reason to think otherwise. 12 output transistors per channel, and a toroidal transformer around 2000 va. They run alongside my cerwin vega cv 2800s nicely.
Unfortunately they are all discontnued now, so the pont is mute, unless your going to buy used.
Türkiye den Slm 4 adet 500rms hoparlörüm var bunları beslemek için SX 3200 tavsiye edermisin? Sterio olarak 4ohm da 1100watt yazıyor bu dogrumudur?
