A valuable highlight in your video is the explanation of exercises that will help singers become successful. With every concept you, you explain why the concept is so important. I remember watching your video mid 2024, when I was just looking for "how to sing with an open throat" kind of video, and this one helped me a lot, however at that point I didn't subscribe, now that my voice is opening up I thought of looking for this video again to grasp the concept even better, this time I paid the price of not subscribing and went through some trouble looking for your videos, couldn't even remember the name of your channel, now I hit the button. @@otsogiants Awesome! I still suggest practicing the fish face trick as well! (We did both of those in chorus haha). The fish face is great because it’s the exact shape you want in your mouth; you can use that as a reference too for when you do the imagining egg thing if you ever find that it’s not feeling or sounding quite right. Plus, the fish face one helps so that you don’t have to consciously think about it too!
      Also, I checked out your cover and you have an INCREDIBLE voice already! More open vowels will only bring your voice from great to amazing! Keep up the amazing work; you’re fantastic!

    • @katecosettevocals
      @katecosettevocals 5 місяців тому +1

    • @user-ug7po9bv3p
      @user-ug7po9bv3p 5 місяців тому +2

      Sorry, I wasn't clear...I meant 'vowel modification', not mouth shapes. Modifying the vowel to make it easier to sing high notes...for example, changing the (I) vowel in Tied to Tuuuh ied... using the uh vowel instead of aw vowel because it's narrower and easier to sing on high notes.@@katecosettevocals

    • @katecosettevocals
      @katecosettevocals 5 місяців тому

       @user-ug7po9bv3p Vowel modification in order to sing high notes easier is not something I think about consciously or actively try to do, so I will always suggest the advice to learn the vowel mouth shapes and pronounce the words however it feels best and most natural for you without overthinking that part. You can also practice high notes on the open vowels you struggle with, such as Ah - it'll really start to make it easier to hit when you sing on the words later :) But again - that's just how I do it in my personal experience. Sorry I couldn't be more help, I hope you find the advice you are looking for!

    Hi Kate, I agree with other comments that this is definitely THE best video for beginning singers on all of UA-cam. Struggled with figuring this topic out for years myself. There are many coaches who offer you loads of exercises with great marketing, but they do not provide the necessary groundwork for real beginners (maybe they are just too far ahead in their own development...). So keep up your great work in breaking things down and keeping it simple! Greetings from Germany, Fabian

      Vowels are fantastic for improving tone and helping pitch and all those other great things, but primarily if you're straining, placement will help you the most! Learning mixed voice will really help you to smooth out that vocal break and keep your voice from straining to reach higher notes. I’d be happy to help!
      It sounds to me like she simply needs to learn mixed voice! And if she is very used to belting and singing with her chest voice, then mixed voice will be a very foreign feeling for her to sing with! So firstly, please let her know that this is a very different feeling to get used to, but that she will get it!
      I will link two videos for you to show her. The first is a general video about mixed voice that will help her understand why we need to learn to sing mixed voice and where it is in relation to her other registers: ua-cam.com/video/0nblvip0HQI/v-deo.html
      This next video is the exercise I used to learn mixed voice, the Nay exercise: ua-cam.com/video/FvP0U9o1NRs/v-deo.html
      Make sure that when she does the Nay exercise, it sounds very similar to how it sounds when I do it in the video! It isn’t a pretty sound, but it’s absolutely vital to learn mixed voice. Once we add singing vowels to it later, it will turn into pretty singing, I promise!
      Let me know if you or she have any other questions after giving those two videos a watch! I also offer online lessons at katecosettevocals.com if she would like 1-on-1 help as well☺️
      Let me know how it goes!

    • @katecosettevocals
      @katecosettevocals Місяць тому

      I think that’s actually not a bad thing! I tend to exaggerate them a little when using them to warm up. But the best way would be to use the photos of the singers in this video of all 5 vowels and try to match them up with your own shape in the mirror. Also, make sure that even if these shapes feel different than you are used to, make sure they’re not painful or uncomfortable! You never want to feel like you’re unhinging your jaw or keeping open to the point of it being uncomfortable!

      That sounds to me like an issue with vocal placement. Here’s a link to a video I made that gives an overview on placement and the other foundations of singing. I’m also currently editing a video on placement specifically that will be up on my channel soon 😊

    I'm really trying to learn to sing better people say I'm naturally good and I'm the church background singer in a small church and a leader in the youth band but my voice when I try to go high which is what comfortable at gets really shaky and the noise is bumpy I'm hoping this helps? I just don't know what to work on and it's really difficult

      It's hard to pinpoint exactly what's going on with your voice without hearing you, but it sounds to me like your issue is with placement! (However, it could also be breathing, and vowels can also affect your voice!)
      My suggestion will be to do this, and then see where it takes you:
      1. Make sure you're breathing correctly. Without proper breathing, your voice can be weak or shaky. And it's always good to make absolute sure you're breathing correctly. Here's a quick video to see if you are: ua-cam.com/video/oBOs0sUEHhU/v-deo.html
      2. Vocal placement - learn mixed voice! learning how to properly sing mixed voice will allow you to sing effortlessly through your whole range. (Mixed voice is the register between head voice and chest voice, so it will not be as strong-sounding as chest voice, but that's exactly the point. It's the mix between them, and I suggest learning this before going to learn belting!)
      Check out this video to understand why we need to learn mixed voice and what it actually is: ua-cam.com/video/0nblvip0HQI/v-deo.html
      And then you can check out this video to learn the exercise that will allow you to sing in mixed voice instantly: ua-cam.com/video/FvP0U9o1NRs/v-deo.html
      3. Meanwhile, you can also practice singing vowels. However, this is a lot to do at once, haha. So if you really wanted to add this into the mix too, I suggest just practicing the shape of all 5 vowels (using your hands in that 'fish face') and just singing straight vowels over songs that are in a low, easy range in your voice. Do not worry about getting to the words or how to find them in words until this becomes second nature to you!
      If you find that you need to improve how you're breathing, practicing even just 5-10 minutes a day is fine. For the mixed voice exercise and for vowels, I'd say shoot for 20 minutes each at minimum (but ALWAYS take at least 1 day off singing per week).
      **If you want to start smaller than this, I'd leave singing vowels off until you get the mixed voice exercise second nature! That's when vowels really start to come in to play anyway. Practicing singing vowels now too will just save you time down the road, but don't overwhelm yourself! :)
      Let me know how this goes! And remember, it takes a good 1-2 weeks to really start to see your habits changing, and it takes months to see really significant changes. If you find that you are still struggling and you aren't improving after a few weeks of trying this, I do offer online voice lessons and would be happy to help locate your vocal issues so we can save you the time and the headache of trying to find them on your own. But definitely try these tips first!

    • @katecosettevocals
      @katecosettevocals 2 роки тому

      You seem to be right where I started off as a singer! It sounds like the only register you’re singing in right now is head voice. Let me first tell you that you can absolutely open up your voice and find the tone and the volume and the strength you want! Take me as the proof!
      I’m gonna link a couple of videos here for you! I have a bunch of voice lesson videos on this channel and they include every single thing I did to get out of just singing in head voice.
      This first one is a sort of overview of what it’s like to just sing in head voice and what I started at the very beginning. Check this one out first! ua-cam.com/video/1lTBrIYifF8/v-deo.html
      The first thing you want to do is learn mixed voice (you can also start learning chest voice in your lowest range, I explain that in the video above, but you can do these one at a time to not overwhelm yourself). Here’s a video on mixed voice: ua-cam.com/video/0nblvip0HQI/v-deo.html
      And here’s a video on how to specifically do the exercise for mixed voice: ua-cam.com/video/FvP0U9o1NRs/v-deo.html
      And something else that might be contributing to the weakness in your voice is incorrect breathing. I’m not exactly sure since I haven’t heard you, but here’s my breathing video. You can tell pretty easily yourself if you’re doing it right or wrong right now. If you aren’t doing this right, start a 5-10 minute daily practice of breathing. (You can even do 2-5 minutes if you want, the daily part is the important part). ua-cam.com/video/oBOs0sUEHhU/v-deo.html
      That is where I’d suggest starting! If you don’t see improvement in a couple of weeks, you may be doing these new exercises incorrectly. Remember nothing should feel strain or hurt or be pushed or forced. If you ever find yourself stuck or not improving, you can send me a message! (If you can, leave me a new comment for future questions instead of a reply-I don’t get notifs for replies for some reason!) and if all else fails, I give online voice lessons at katecosettevocals.com. I can help you with anything! ☺️
      Let me know how this goes for you and just know that it sounds like you are quite literally starting exactly where I did years ago. Which means that you can and you will improve! Happy singing and don’t forget to have fun!

    The “a” is also a diphthong too isn’t it? “Aaaeee” like “ahhhheee” for I

    • @katecosettevocals
      @katecosettevocals 10 місяців тому

      Great question! I think sometimes we turn it into “aaee” when using it in daily language, but the trick of it as a singing vowel is to keep it on “a”. You can keep “a” as its own sound with “a”‘ s mouth shape, and as long as you don’t change the mouth shape at all, it will remain an “a” sound and not turn into “e”. You’ll notice in “ahhheee” for “i” that you need to adjust your mouth shape to switch “e”.
      So as long as you’re just sticking to “a” in the “a” mouth shape, it will be its own vowel sound and you’ll be all set! 😊

      i would do an "A" vowel for change! A can turn into an "E" sound, so just stay on the "A" part rather than turning it into a + E :)

    Hi, I am kind of lost. When singing, my voice lacks resonance, tone. I’ve been listening to blues songs and ask to Elvis Presley in his young years… I can’t reproduce the same depth they all have in their voice, I don’t know how to get to that.
    Is it because my voice is different and I’ll never sound like them, ever (the resonance) ?
    I also have big trouble with singing with emotions. Any idea as to why my voice is shallow and not deep ?

    • @katecosettevocals
      @katecosettevocals 9 місяців тому +1

      Hi, Nathalie! You can absolutely get rich tone in your voice! Singing vowels are a huge part of that, but they’re not the only factor. From what you’ve described, it sounds to me like you’re dealing with more of a vocal placement issue, meaning it would be best for you to learn to sing in all 3 vocal registers (head voice, mixed voice, and chest voice). If you are struggling with a hollow/shallow voice, it can also mean you may be breathing incorrectly. However, it’s hard to tell without hearing you, but no matter what that kind of tone you’re after is achieved when you’re singing with a combination of proper breathing, singing vowel mouth shape, and vocal placement. So ensuring that you’re learning all of those correctly will bring you that tone you want! :)
      Here’s a video I made on all the parts to learning to sing, this can help you pinpoint your issues! ua-cam.com/video/RlnrtKlrNdU/v-deo.htmlsi=nIcpU326abfHe9zq
      Without hearing you sing, I’m not sure which would be best for you to start with, but you can learn them in any order. Some orders are just easier than others, but it all depends on where your voice is right now. I do offer online voice lessons if you were interested in having me hear you to give you more accurate advice!
      As for singing with emotion, my biggest piece of advice is to not worry about it until you have your singing technique down. I tried so hard to learn to sing with emotions while I was still struggling to sing well, and it was impossible for me. I was so frustrated with my voice and so focused on singing technique that trying to focus on emotion took my focus away from the technique, and it just really stunted my learning process. After I got my singing technique down and my voice was freely singing through my range and most of my struggles were gone, that’s when I started learning to sing with emotion and it was so much easier! 😊
      Give that video a watch, and let me know if you have any other questions!
