  • This month's Adult RE class was held at the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos on Sunday, May 26, 2024.
The topic is Taoism, the Way of Flow.
In this lecture we discuss Taoism (or Daoism) in contrast to Confucianism which we covered last month. While Confucians say that to be a whole and complete human, we should become a rú or scholar, through education, Taoists say that we have to unlearn all the artificial social aspects we have been taught in society so that we can return to our natural state like we were when we were young, thus becoming a Zhenren or "sage".
These two philosophies are in many ways opposites, but many ascribe to both.
We tell the story of Laozi, and discuss important Taoist texts such as the Tao De Ching and the Zhuangzi, and important concepts such as they Tao/Dao, Ch/Qi, and Wu wei.
We also discuss techniques of self cultivation such as Inner and Outer Alchemy, Tai Chin, Qigong, Meditation, and various Sexual practices.
We also discuss the two main organized sects of Taoism today, Tianshi dao (Way of the Celestial Masters Orthodox Unity Daoism) and Quanzhen dao (Complete Reality or Complete Perfection).

Thank you for a very neat presentation, halfway through you gained a new subscriber :-)
46:00 The eastern mindset is somewhat different from our western one. The view of technological development vs. nature is more our western way of thinking. One doesn't need to reject one to follow the other - human development is a part of the nature. Confucianism and Taoism aren't opposites, but complementary to each other. Your "real human wisdom is knowing when each one is required" hits the nail square in the head.
Very glad this came up for me, I'm excited to start the playlist from the top!

Hey, great video! Is there a reason why Islam is omitted in the table around 2:50? Would like to know what their stance is on problem/solution/Techniques

I usually summarize Islam by saying that the problem is pride, and therefore the solution is submission to God.
