This is one of the most defining moment in Canadian history and personally I think this series should be mandatory in high school history classes. We need to remember those who made it possible for us to be who we are today.
Watching this documentary made me a very proud patriotic Canadian.
I agree. We (Canada ) may have a small military but we are well trained and fierce fighters just ask anybody we have fought against.
I watched this and For King and Country growing up, made me respect the history and sacrifice, ended up serving in the Army my self in a combat engineer unit
Used to watch these everytime they were on tv
So did I with Mum.
Used to watch these when I was a kid on tvo
Mum and I would watch this show. She thought that The Maple Leaf Forever should be our national song
One of my favourite documentary
The intro is fantastic
May we never forget them. Many thanks Canada, from Langemark
My Great Grandfather was KIA July 16 1916 at the battle of the Somme may his name live for ever more
My Great Granduncle was Killed in Action on March 16, 1917 in the Arras region of France. He was part of the 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. For King and Empire! May they both R.I.P.
@@histman3133 Same to your family Thank them all for the service and the ultimate price for our todays and our Grand Children's tomorrows. Side note my Great Grandfather was British Army the family had not yet came to Canada they were planning to come in 1915 but the war broke out.
@@robertbreedon9137 I had a family member in both the British Territorial Forces West Somerset Yeomanry from 1908 to 1916, my great grand uncle as well as a very distant cousin in the Australian Imperial Force that joined in May of 1915. I would very curious to know what unit your great grandfather was in and where he served if it's not too much trouble. I always love hearing from others and their family experiences too.
@@robertbreedon9137 My great grand uncle's family came to Canada in May of 1914. My great grand uncle had been here since 1913 and worked in farming until joining up. Thankfully they made it out just right before the start of the conflict.
@@robertbreedon9137 Interestingly enough my ancestors had been in Australia since the 1850s long before they even came to Canada. My half chose Canada obviously. Thank your family also for their service.
For a young Country like Canada , It has been in a hell of a lot of war's , I can see why they are undefeated , they wrote the book on new tactics and modern war with Vimy , there should be more movies a bout some of these great soldiers , and Canadian accomplishments ! because some of this is Hollywood stuff , and true , love to see Canada enbrace it's war hero's more , Currie was the greatest general of WW 1 , Billy Bihop , 72 kills in the air war , and he flew only 2 year's before being sent back to Canada to sell Bonds , the Red Baron flew for 4 year's with 80 kills ! not to mention the greatest sniper , pegamgambo , if I spelled that write , A Native Canadian with 300 or more kills , I may be wrong , but he was the best...This is just the First War folks , they were just as kick Ass in the second War. Love the Canadians.
THIS is a Run-on Sentence!
@@jimbo5458 you obviously value form over substance
I've re-visited your King and Empire, and King and Country videos many times within the past few years. There really are no words that truly can convey the horror, brutality, and overall carnage of what the Canadians endured during the Great War. Norm, your videos are exceptional. They're educational, very easy to understand, and basically down to earth so everyone can enjoy. Thank you. I hope that you'll revisit WW1, WW2, and Korean War battlefields.
Lest we forget 🍁
This contains one of the most horrible descriptions of gas warfare ive ever heard. Very good series
Amazing series! An unparalleled monument to the best of the Canadian nation.
My grandfather was one. John Burnham, originally of the 44th Battalion, Winnipeg then of the 29th Battalion, "Tobin's Tigers" Vancouver.
love this series
Mum's opinion was that The Maple Leaf Forever should have been the national anthem❤
I can’t believe the same channel I go to watch Kenny vs spenny when UA-cam pulls Kenny’s videos down also has my favourite war documentary
The French used tear gas in 1914. The Germans fired gas shells at the British in October of 1914. Germans also deployed gas shells against the Russians in January of 1915. Yrpes was not the first instance of gas being used in warfare but more of the first time it was deployed in significant amounts.
I bet I'm not the only one that loved the part about the High Explosive Shell 'fuse' was painted Red while the shrapnel ones were Orange. I doubt if I will ever work that into a conversation, but I love complete knowledge- the kind that tries to show you things were AND how they sounded, looked and smelled. At 44:35, I think the image of the very fields where so many men died with an amusement park right next to it was chilling... and sad. Maybe it's just me, but it seems disrespectful to have people having the time of their lives alongside that field. Tourism is big money everywhere, but in this case, they don't care about an old battlefield.
MAN that IG Farben was one hell of a Company?! They made this gas too?!
imagine just finding a mg42 or a mg from ww1. im sure theres lots of weaponry scattered around europe... most of it has been picked up but the large areas covered over vast times.... theres got to be some ghosts of the past burried along the eurpeon theatre
great series, far too many ads
Back when Canada was a country worth being proud of, now it's a joke and these men died for nothing.
I am being forced to watch this, please help me.
me too
@@NomadVideos Is your dad making you watch ? If so , you have a good dad..and If not , it's worth the whole watch , amazing Canadian troops..
