I used to work at what would be now considered a "small" datacenter in downtown Dallas. It ran at around 7MW average load from around 5000 servers. We had six similar generators plus a swing spare that could take over any one of the six. It sounded and smelled like a train yard when it ran. Opportunities to hear, smell and feel the beasts run were numerous. There were weekly tests, numerous storms, and for a time, we participated in "LaaRs" or Loads as a Resource. Basically, in a grid emergency, the utility would send us the LaaRs signal and we'd cut over to diesel power and disappear off of the grid to help prevent rolling blackouts.
@@jeffhoogkamer I was told we got a cheaper rate. I'm not sure why the facility stopped participating in the program. I suspect it was more down to corporate policy of our new owner than any technical reason. Technically speaking, any time we operate a transfer switch, we expose the loads to risk and this DC's new owner at the time was famously risk averse.
Outstandig video, totally did the start up, then the money shot when it's loaded up and finally, what most genset videos don't have, is the shutdown with the turbos still spinning!! excellent video!!!
I work for a telecommunications company. My building has a 750 KW backup generator. They brought in a portable backup generator for us to hookup as training. It was a Caterpillar 1 MW . I watched the RPMs on it when they transferred the building. It acted like it wasn’t even there. Impressive.
Still a baby with only 7:hours on the clock! It is surprising how compact the 2 MW alternator is compared to the bulk of the 16 cylinder Diesel turning the shaft. Lovely Diesel wind-up and wind-down sound too. Thanks.
Same but two of these things can only run my place in emergency power only. We have two 250 gal tanks n two 100 gal reserve. We can run for about 38hrs before we need fuel. Our lines from the city are 26,400v
I had two of these installed in 2007 at the company I worked for located in Baton Rouge, LA. Both are fully enclosed and have bi-fuel capability. They are used as backup power for the entire campus. Absolute beasts.... reliable and powerful, supplying 15 KV power to the internal electrical distribution system.
I worked in a gravel pit that had a 3512 I believe and that thing would tell you all about it when the plant was fired up. (Largest crusher in Montana) Super cool video!
I built those for 5 years. 3600 Cat i put everything on it from a long block to a running engine except the oil pan. A piston and rod weighs 350 lbs in one and is over 11 inches in diameter
The town I came from has 12 transfo's of 250kW, so 3MW for about 3.500 people. And that is 3MW if the transfo's are giving it's max capacity lol. Where I work, we count about 3 amps per home (at 3N400V grid) to calculate the transfo needed in that area hehehe... so this generator could handle my whole town with ease... crazy...
My town has three CAT diesel generators. Not this big! Theyre like the size of locomotive engines and mounted in connex boxes. During peak time in summer, they cut off from the power company and run on these. Damn the heat that comes off of them.
Is that big black pipe for an intercooler? Seems way too big for water but then again, it’s massive… Wow, so badass to see that thing respond to having a few hundred homes worth of load just dumped on it in a second. 😂😦
Depends where you are located, but very rare to see one installed that big around here. Can’t imagine it’s a huge issue to deal with worldwide when more people just have heat pump hot water these days.
Electric start generator. Love the black smoke. Powers up six electric cars, so they can feel smug ,not hurting environment. Oe of these in California desert, for electric car charging station. Perfect.still need diesel
@JC-tn8zh or just drive a normal car as it's redundant to run diesel gen to boost a little car. Mind numbing. All alaska hwy, propane generators to boost electric cars. So fuel truck delivers propane, mile 0 to whitehorse is 2800 kms one way. We ain't saving planet by electric
Was someone in an electric car mean to you? If you like this type of machinery they you should love it right? You do realize that those electric cars likely spend most of their time running off of renewable resources. So what if one fast charge stop is run by a diesel generator if it means an electric car can meet the needs of someone and can run on other cleaned sources the majority of the time. You sound like these 100% or 0% people where if something isn’t 100% one way it’s not worth doing.

Interesting about the LaaRs - did the utility compensate you for going off the grid, or is that just part of being a larger customer?

I got a Predator just like this at Harbor Freight.
Must have been the same one I got from there during there Black Friday sale. 😎 I got the red and black model though 🤣

We have a pair of these units at my workplace for backup power. Truly impressive machines.
I bet y’all kinda wish the power would go out so y’all can hear this thing startup
@AutWes it's always a great time when we transfer to the generators. Whole maintenance crew comes out to listen to the fuckers sing.

Biggest I ever installed was 4 2,500 MW in parallel to power a municipal water pumping station.
Damn, that thing has a lot of power wow
Gotta love those big Cats!
It's a beautiful sound, beautiful machine😍😍😍

What part of MT?
@laundrieshanging9077 it was mostly in eastern Mt but all over. I started in Bozeman and they would go to pits all over
Wow! That Cat can sure “Roll Coal!” 🚂
I built those for 5 years. 3600 Cat i put everything on it from a long block to a running engine except the oil pan. A piston and rod weighs 350 lbs in one and is over 11 inches in diameter
Niiiiiice ! Pure Function ! A BRAND NEW CLASSIC.
Had four of these on my last offshore vessel. 👍⚓️😁🛠
Amazing sound
Now that's a unit!
According to google, 2 megawatts can run roughly 400, to 1800 homes. 2MW is 2 million watts. That is unreal how much power that thing makes.
Google talks crap! Houses in the UK have 100A service fuses. At 230V, that’s 23kW. In practice, you’d rarely use more than 10kW so that’s 200 homes.
My electric water boiler alone needs 24kW...
@@ItsMeWanja your electric boiler pulls 100 amps??
@@ItsMeWanjamy need 2.4kW
Yeah, could power a small community
I have one of these and after it warms up I touch the negative and positive output wires together to make sure it's working
...
Beautiful machines ❤
Turbo is great sound
Would love to pair it with an 18 speed/3:43 rears 😛
Impressive machine

These are so loud too. I use to weld fuel pipe for these for a company that built sound dampening enclosures and switch rooms
Do the valves open to let her freewheel when shutting down? Sounds like it spins for a while after it’s cut off?
What a beast.
CATERPILLAR 🚜😎
Excellent Excellent!!!!!!

2MW is ~2600HP at the bank, wonder what it is at the crank.
3500 hp at the crank. Rotational losses are between 15-20 percent depending on the rad fan
If it doesn’t have USB-C, and Bluetooth, I don’t want it 😂
Looks just like the generator sets made at Power solution international. Ran a brake press forming up parts to make the enclosure.
Holy god….let’s look at that 2MW AC load now, shall we? What AC load handles that large of a load? Something from Keysight or something??
Them turbskis coming down sounds like a 747.
Guy on the other side plugs in his phone to charge 🤣
It probably only has 0.5A USB-A ports.
Is that big black pipe for an intercooler? Seems way too big for water but then again, it’s massive…
Wow, so badass to see that thing respond to having a few hundred homes worth of load just dumped on it in a second. 😂😦
How many watts are consumed permanently spinning that big old radiator fan?
Sorry I have to do it…. Will it fit my Honda civic?
Your Honda civic would fit in this engine 😊
Instant on hot water heaters in homes can be up to 28kw themselves
Depends where you are located, but very rare to see one installed that big around here. Can’t imagine it’s a huge issue to deal with worldwide when more people just have heat pump hot water these days.
What kind of load bank is that connected too
I have no use for it but I want one.
How often do backup generators get their fluids changed?
I want one.
Big cats are bullet proof. We had over a dozen 2 Megawatt Diesel Cats.
The 3600 and 3500 series are decent, C-175's not so much...
I need that for my engine swap in my pickup. Might be a little front heavy.😂
God what a monster...
How much horsepower does it make?
750 watt = 1 HP theoretically, so at 2 MW that should be 2666 HP + real life inefficiencies, my guess is it's over 3000 HP
1800 Rpm full power ??
Sounds.... like a open car window at 100 mph
Can I get one of these straight piped? I really hate my neighbors.
That would stress the suspension of my 2500HD.
If the sound of a CAT firing off doesn't bring a smile to your face, there's something terribly wrong with you.
Catter.pillar is great
If it ain't a Cat, it must be a dog.
I think it's fit on mazda miata
Электричество для Греты Тумберг 😂
HOW DARE YOU!
What you asking for that unit?
1.2 million us dollars was my price but it came with an enclosure
❤❤❤❤❤
2000000÷750=2660 horsepower but guessing engine is 3500 horse.
Turbines can produce more power then that at the same size
Takes too long to come up to power for emergency power situations.
Electric start generator. Love the black smoke. Powers up six electric cars, so they can feel smug ,not hurting environment. Oe of these in California desert, for electric car charging station. Perfect.still need diesel
Ok Einstein
Did you know that a diesel engine is most efficient in this application?
@JC-tn8zh or just drive a normal car as it's redundant to run diesel gen to boost a little car. Mind numbing. All alaska hwy, propane generators to boost electric cars. So fuel truck delivers propane, mile 0 to whitehorse is 2800 kms one way. We ain't saving planet by electric

Hey guys can anyone here help me engine swap this into my Prius?
Prius traction battery could probably start this thing. Probably...
😘😘😘👍
Too bad it wasn’t an air starter. Love hearing those fire up
Split cycle engine
Sounds "amazing " like a leaf blower.
How dare you
