May I just, as a lifelong LFC fan, express my respect and admiration for Sir Alex. May his like never, ever appear again at Old Trafford! God bless you sir.
To me this is the GOAT of all coaches. He never took a sabbatical for 26 years straight and made Man Utd a top team feared by many others. Won 50% of the league titles while he's there. He's one in a million
He did play, just not at a high level. Spent years in the Portuguese league system and by all accounts was a prolific goalscorer during his time with the reserve team at Rio Ave (at the time managed by his father).
He could have made his league debut then but the club president overruled it due to fears of nepotism. He'd go on to make around a hundred professional appearances over a 7 year spell, scoring a professional hattrick for Belenenses and becoming club captain of Comércio e Indústria. He decided that he didn't have the requisite pace and power to compete at higher levels and elected to become a coach instead. He wasn't just an academic - he was very much born into football and his experiences playing entirely out of the spotlight undoubtedly had an impact on him as a manager.
I think what Sir Alex meant was he never played the game at the highest level i.e in an elite club...pep played for an elite barca team, ancelotti played for THAT milan team, zidane ofcz is ZIDANE and so on....he played in portugal but really didnt play for the elite teams
Jose was a player for short time even not in highest level league.. The one and only who never play but become great manager was Arrigo Sacchi.. The manager of the great milan sides of late ‘80..
People forget just how unstoppable 00s Mourinho was. Sucess with massive clubs, but massive clubs who needed that final push. Might be a long time yet till we see a European cup won from a club outwith the big 5 leagues. As hard in 04 as it is currently. Inter for decades just couldn't get to that top spot. He sealed it then added the big one. Immediately took Chelsea from nearly men to top dogs, competing with Fergie & Wenger, totally blew them away. A perfect fit for Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund or Marseille. Still brilliant, serial winner but 02-12 guaranteed winner. Not many could do it in so many different leagues under different circumstances. See many managers need to fit to a certain club, he made the clubs fit him. Legend
@Jack_Bauer I don't believe so. It also said he was in some second league teams but nothing about him ever playing. Quit early maybe that's why and got his coaching badges done.
Actually Jose Mourinho played a little bit as a midfielder, then went to become a scouter and an assistant for his father, who was a football manager. So there was some foundation. But, yes, he had determination to be more than an average coach in his country.
Pep is amazing. But neither he nor any manager in the 21st century will ever win Europe's top prize with the likes of Inter / Porto. Jose's understanding of the game is miles ahead.

Mourinho did play football - I believe he was part of Os Belenenses youth academy but then didn’t make it into the first teams. I’m sure that’s what Sir Alex meant.
