This knife was among my first, and most prized pocket knives. I lived in Jamaica for part of my childhood, and like every other boy, I had to have a ratchet knife, like a Rude Bwaay. I modified it, as was the norm, using a coin to slightly bend the lock bar so that it would be looser, allowing me to flick the knife open one-handed without the effort or the constipation face. Of course, neither I nor anyone I knew was in a street gang, but I got to feel like I was with my ratchie (yep, that's an official nickname for the knife) in my pocket or my waistband. It's the reason I picked up a Cold Steel Kudu - their plastic-handled homage to the classic Okapi. Truth be told, I quite like Cold Steel's version - it's pretty much indestructible, has a decent enough stainless steel blade, sharpens easily, and, if you don't mind clipless folders, it's actually really useful as an EDC knife. Thanks for the pleasant memories on this one.
Love the story! I’ve never been there. Yeah the street gang bullshit is overblown on all this, I think. The majority of people who own these are just regular dudes. Like you. I’m not regular though.
I still have my Okapi, original German, not the later South African, bought in Kingston about 1977. As a wannabe Rude Bway in the early 70s I carried a different knife, also made by Okapi but very similar to a Mercator. These were flat and easier to hide in the pockets of our khaki school uniforms.

If you wanted a reliable, inexpensive knife to work with, that you're not afraid to scratch or lose you carried an Okapi. Around the house, in the kitchen, on the farm, you name it. His grandmother did everything in her kitchen with the seven star Okapi's, what's cool is that you can close them when you're done using them unlike modern kitchen knives.

There is a common theme that runs through the comments where either: wife watches blankly or asks the husband if you're watching that weird knife guy again- then leaves the room.
As a South African, I know these knives well. They are crude and cheap but functional and surprisingly tough. They have a very negative connotation here though, and you will get quite a few side looks and be given a wide berth if seen using one in a crowded area, but if you want a knife for those nasty jobs like cutting gritty, dirty material or you don't have much money for a functional knife, the Okapi will get the job done. I must admit that the the Cold Steel Kudu copy is a better knife though. Better steel, better grind, better lockup and just better made compared to the Okapi, for not much money either

@@AdvancedKnifeBro it was super hard yes because you needed to keep alot of pressure on the ring pulling it back and fling it with all my 10 year old strength almost dislocating my elbow 🤣 but it was cool
I actually really love my Okapi, it came with no edge at all and the grind was hilariously bad. But after sharpening it up, the steel takes and holds a good edge, and the large blade is a useful size and shape. Being able to spin it around on your finger is fun while you're sitting around the camp fire. I just picked up the cold steel version and it's wayyyyyy better in terms of quality. Not quite as cool though.
Cold Steel also makes a knive like this, which is a surprisingly reasonable design for a Cold Steel. It's also dirt cheap, but just not as traditional, so it's probaly better in every way.
I searched "Okapi" because of Attack on Titan. I learned that it's not only an animal or cellphone it's also a knife. Man, how much longer I'll learn about this okapi?
Just want to put it out there as a south african that these knives don't cost anywhere near 12$ if you buy them locally. In fact they are usually less than one dollar. The price usually range from 8 to 17 south african rand depending on where you get it and the exchange rate is more or less 16 rand to 1 dollar. These knives are made to be as cheap as possible and although they are by no means good knives I haven't been able to find anything better at that price
You're a regular Jamaican rude boy! Check out a great reggae tune by the Heptones called "Country Boy": you-a shootin' up the place...with a ratchet in your waist.
Ok, I really have to ask where does one get lists of Gang Knives? Wouldn't those folks rather go for the high end knives or are we talking South African Gangs because that sounds like even more fun.. Great review.. as always very funny and interesting in presenting a well let's also call it "interesting" knife.
the key word is research. I don't do that.. I just copy the lists from the internet about bladelength and stuff.. then cut a piece of paper, cut some carboard and talk for 10 minutes.. that's probably because I've never seen those lists.. and because I am technically blind.. I will finally have to find a good solution to mark text and have it read.. I haven't looked into that at all but really what gangs? Gangs in the US or over there? I mean the US is over there too from here but you know what I mean
In Iraq and Egypt we use Okapi knives too. There’s this edition that’s made in either Germany or South Africa. But the only difference between the Okapi we get and the one the rest of the world gets is that we get it with Arabic alphabets, the brand is written in English and then there’s a word that says “Khooja” which means teacher or something like that.. The reason we choose Okapi knives because they have a very sharp blade, I have had my elbow cut just by the knife touching my skin, that’s how sharp a real Okapi should be. And to many people they buy this knife for it’s sound, it makes a strong nice sound when opening and closing it. Third reason we choose it is because it lasts for long times and doesn’t break easily and actually it’s very affordable in Iraq you can get it for 3-4 dollars. Last and not least it has a good name, a kid and an old person have saw or heard about this knife at least for once during their lifetime. When something has a good name it becomes popular and wanted and you’ll see many kids, men and women having them. But one note, not all that owns an Okapi are gangsters, some use it for cutting things some for protection and the others use to to gang bang around, most likely this generations teenagers..
As odd as it might sound, these knives being so crudely made is part of what made me interested in them. Don't know if that makes any sense at all. I've collected several Okapi knives of different shapes and sizes since they're so inexpensive and oddly designed. Kind of fun. The history of how and why Okapi became a thing is also pretty interesting. An Opinel or Antonini of much better quality can be bought for about the same price though.
I do like crudely made knives... I dunno these just didn’t click for me. But I had read a lot about them and was sort of interested- and now here we are!
