As long as we don't wanna replay the same fault as we made with f360 we have to keep in mind the difference between free-to-use (commercial) software and really free (literally) opensource software. I am afraid to seddle on a licensed software in the future and invest my time to model my things for hobby use.
If you want to be the owner of your files you have to decide for open source.
Also "free" use of commercial software, especially cloud based like f360, isn't free. You pay with your work hours as beta tester and they improve the software by analyzing your workfkow and personal data and behavior.
At least I decided to go back to freeCad!

You're doing a great job and well deserve the traffic you are getting due to the F360 licensing changes. I hope you will not spread out into too many different products but stick to some and go deep into them instead. That being said I'll be following your work and thank you for doing this.

Exactly why I never went with Fusion 360. With the next couple of releases of FreeCAD, it will provide everything I need for my shop unless a customer specifically needs another CAD format.

Thanks.. I'm new in 3d printers and I don't have experience with 3d design, only a few tries with sketchup few years ago and fusion 360 in the last couple of months. For a no experience user like me, fusion 360 was hard and I was thinking to seriously dedicate time to learn it, but after this license change, it was a red flag to look somewhere else because maybe now is not big a deal to a new user like me, but I don't know what happen in the future. Luckily I found freecad and your channel, so here you have a new subscriber, thanks.

ONShape is not free, although they have a free version, I got a run around by them 1-2-3 years ago. BobCAD has terrible marketing and sales practices. Alibre has a long history as being part of KeyCAD which was good. I tried PTC Creo. I am still learning FreeCAD but I think it's the best. Autodesk is going to pretty much lock down Fusion 360. they just had to get Lars to save face by posting a video with him and the CEO going over the changes, and then deciding to bring back STEP import/export. At least with your free use of Fusion, you're essentially a beta tester while they track you.

Well, i like it a lot. Sure it's a dynamic modeller not a parametric modeller ( although they're sketcher options for Sketcher constraints (actually not parametric - just constraints ) and it's previous form of non constraints ), the dragging faces around in section mode is wonderfull. One big downfall is if you need basic exchange abilities, Step file out etc or professional drawings ( drawing module is same as Spaceclaim i believe), then the add-on modules will cost around £800 as a bundled up pair - one-off charge - lifetime licence.
But if you just want to use as a hobby and export for Rapid Prototyping with Cura, then that's all free to use.
RS ( Radio Spares ) offer it and other electrical / electronic software design packages all linking up mechanical / electrical / electronic parts etc.
The structure browser really works well - parts/sub-assys, assemblies all handled very efficiently, lightweight, versionable parts and assemblies all can be replaced with just a couple of clicks. Highly accurate ACIS kernal used.

I used Solid Edge, but the round shapes are horrible in STL / 3MF (3D print files) and now I am looking for something else again. Thank you very much for your time. Ohnestly when Autodesk changed free license I have halted all my projects. I don't want to wake up one morning and discover that I don't have access to my stuff anymore.
I will look into DSM also because I can't transision from F360 to FreeCAD easy enough (or at least not immediately, however I want to dig into that). However DSM not being parametric will be a problem down the line.

Fusion 360 is back with STEP export for the free license. Just a heads-up for anyone interested. That said, it really depends on what you do with it. Mechanical engineering for actual real world parts? Buy the fusion license, imho. Designing, just for fun, 3d art or 3d printing? Look-up MOI 3D and Rhino 3D. Moi is really easy to use and fast.

I still have a soft spot for Rhino, except for their upgrade policy kinda went sour so we haven't moved on to 6 at work. I haven't seen another package with the amount of functions Rhino has for curves. Only downside is storing in between models if a client makes a change somewhere in the process since it isn't Parametric.

Great comparisons and suggestions. Don't forget Siemens Solid Edge, there is a student license for Uni students.
    FreeCad
There is a lot to love about Freecad, a very powerful package.
Sadly Freecad also comes with a lot of free user interface issues that are particularly non intuitive. I have had the situation where necessary inputs where below the screen, and you had to scroll down to get to these input boxes. Only trouble was, there was no indication of these off screen menu choices. That was 1 year ago. Perhaps things have changed. I wasted a lot of time with FC before finally moving on to F360, Onshape, Solid Edge.
The overall feel of Freecad is that 10 different people created 11 different styles of menuing with no one in control of UI cohesion. No project or systems engineering.

I do some modifications of stl files to fit my needs, such as adapting prusa i3 MK3 hotend to my hypercube evolution. Unfortunately FreeCAD does not have push/pull ability which would make that more difficult. Designspark mechanical and Fusion360 both have push/pull and I'll likely be sticking with them until FreeCAD adds push/pull.

I really don't mind paying for the F360, but the price is impossible to maintain. Just for comparison purposes, I'm Brazilian and a hobbyist in the world of 3D printers, I can't pay R$900.00 a month just to make sketches when the minimum monthly income of an average Brazilian is around R$1,100. If I had the possibility of having a license even with less functionality for R$ 200.00/month I think it would be fair.
Thanks for the hints, actually, I'm using SparkDesign Mechanical.

Maybe i dont get it right, but when ever i see free or cheap alternatives to Solid works, i miss the "just draw some crapy blue lines on the screen" and AFTER that do the Trick with measurements and relationship of dots and lines.
I think thats on of the biggest advantage of solid works

    • @Scavage0001
      @Scavage0001 4 роки тому

@Max D how could you say that? Designspark is not comprehensiv with solid Works in my opinion. Design Spark work like tipical autocad, you need to draw the line and tell the line while you're drawing it how long it should be... Thats terrible, solid works never bother you with that s*it until you are ready for measurements. If I remember it right at the designspark you don't have a Feature tree with all features ever used on your part...

I’ve been using Inventor for many years and paid the annual maintenance each year. However they terminated my contract to force me into the 360 subscription arrangement. Serious loss of control with that being implemented. One wonders how the major users, aircraft, weapons manufacture have allowed this?
So we will try to migrate to a stable platform over the next couple of years, what a pity. Terry - South Africa.

I have been doing something very like in FreeCad that to make a house for a wemos D1 project. I needed to use multiple "bodies" - one for the case, one for the lid, one for the wemos, one for the led display, one for the LDR - the last three being .step I liberated from "grabcad". And then to get reference edges off the PCB .step (which is now a body), I need to use "shapebinder". This channel has a tutorial video that helped me :). Select the case and make it the Active Body / Active Part, select the imported .step without making it active, and click the blue jelly blob icon called "ShapeBinder" to make a yellow translucent copy that you can then reference in your sketches. And save often, because 0.18.4 what I was using keeps screwing up when my sketches get complex...
