It's not the he acts like a douchebag so much as him saying he's "proud to be from Sheffield," when at every opportunity acts like some Pseudo-American ie: something that he's not, like he's trying to separate himself from his earlier life. You can hear it in his music too, trading high energy guitar riffs for more slow, seductive, melodic lines. That's why people don't like the way he's changed.
Ewacool The line: "you're not from New York City, you're from Rotherham" springs to mind here. That said, he has a history of changing styles and personas to fit the theme of each album, so I wouldn't judge him too harshly for it.
I felt a little sad when he said, "I don't know, does anyone even wanna know what I think about it?" Like underneath all the leather jacket and hair gel, he's still the same kid who's too afraid to share his lyrics to his bandmates out of fear that they'll take the mick out of him.
lol what I know are really just things from interviews. But yeah, there are several stuff that kind of shows that Al may not really be that confident in himself as he wanted people to believe, at least in the beginning. 1. When the band just got started, they didn't really have any lyrics to their songs, so they'd either sing gibberish or just play the instruments. Al secretly wrote some songs and worked up the courage to bring them to the rehearsal one day. 2. Al reallyyyy didn't want to be the frontman (at the beginning). People were trying to encourage him but he just didn't enjoy being the centre of the attention and for a while the band got someone to front instead (Glyn Jones, their schoolmate, was mentioned as AM's frontman at the time) 3. In some interviews, including ones from NME, Al mentioned creating some sort of an act/character for his performance so that he could come to terms performing in front of the crowd.
most of the people who are (trying to be) artists, whether visual or textual, are like this, honestly. generally speaking, it's in an artist's mindset to never be 'over the moon!!!' with what you're creating. i studied photography and one teacher told us the most accurate thing: "you are your own worst critic."
Yes, in other interviews he has already stated that people think that being the lead singer of a band brings confidence and security in being who you are, but that with him it is not like that, he only does it because he likes it. Alex is getting more and more drunk and drugged on stage to support this persona he brought to please fans who have always complained about his lack of presence during the shows. If you listen to "Bourne Identity" he wrote for The Last Shadow Puppets, you'll see who the real Alex is...
I knew he'd say Arabella. Those lyrics are so good. "Her lips are like the galaxy's edge, and her kiss the color of a constellation falling into place"
it's funny he questioned if anybody was actually curious about that because one of the main reasons i listen to Arctic Monkeys is because of the lyrical content. it's modern poetry put to a catchy tune, and i adore it.
"But I crumble completely when you cry"- 505 and "Be cruel to me, cause I'm a fool for you." -Suck it and See I love these lines as much as I like him singing these lines.
"You're rarer than a can of dandelion & burdock, and those other girls are just post-mix lemonade." It's so hard to properly explain how well Alex has managed to capture British social culture in his lyrics. They span so much of what his audience can relate to - the first two albums are like gospel for the youth of our generation - binge-drinking, girl-chasing, story-topping and the fear of growing up. Then albums 3 and 4 are more introspective, almost lonely in their stories of lost loves and bizarre dreams never quite realised. As if being on top of the world is all well and good but doesn't fill the most important holes (Love is a Laserquest and Cornerstone are great examples of this). There are always the nods back to nights out and taxis home, even more so in AM which now embraces so much of the swagger and rock & roll that living in LA and sustained success has brought them, but hidden in all of Josh Homme's sexy sounds are lyrics that still describe an awkward working class lad fumbling through relationships and worshipping girls who he knows are too good for him. Most importantly, throughout his whole career, Alex has managed to steer clear of cliches in favour of colloquialisms and everyday, relatable, tangible symbols and metaphors. All of this sung with his familiar Northern twang, and you find it impossible not to identify with him in some way. Everyone from Sheffield around my age feels like they sort of own the Arctic Monkeys and their songs; as if there's a private little space in each of us where they sit nice and snug, and we do a little internal knowing nod to each other when we hear them in a bar or on the radio. But I don't think it's just us, I think all of Britain and maybe some of the rest of the world too can feel a bit like this when we hear their music, and that's what makes them so great. Why I'm preaching and waffling all this to a few random sods on the internet I don't know, but I bloody love the Arctic Monkeys. So there.
+Jamie Stevenson Really respect what you have said mate, im over 't hills in manny, and it's same deal for my generation, im in my 40's but absolutely love the monkeys, just because i know talent when i hear it. And even to some extent, in the late 70's the specials with ghost town, wrote a song there that really encapsulated english life at that time.. Im finding the more i open up, the more i find i enjoy music more. Anyway your not waffling or preaching pal, just someone who gets it..

“She walked away, well her shoes were untied. And the eyes were all red you could see that we cried, and I watched and I waited til she was inside, forcing a smile and waving goodbye”-Do Me A Favour hands down best lyrics he’s ever written
I think he's talking to the interviewer (whose name is also Matthew) stating that it's his job to critique his lyrics and not his own job to critique them.
"When she needs to shelter from reality she takes a dip in my day dreams.""She's made from outer space, and her lips are like the galaxy's edge and I kissed the color of a constellation falling into place." Arabella is absolute genius..
Shira H "My days end best when this sunset gets itself Behind that little lady sitting on the passenger side It's much less picturesque without her catching the light The horizon tries but it's just not as kind on the eyes"
Honestly I think the song I'm most impressed by in terms of lyrics is Dance Little Liar. "I heard the truth was built to bend. A mechanism to suspend the guilt is what you are requiring still. You've got to dance little liar. Just like those fibs to pop and fizz. And you'll be forced to take that awful quiz, and you're bound to trip. And she'll detect the fiction on your lips, and dig a contradiction up."
+ForeverPandas101 "And the clean coming will hurt and you can never get is spotless, when there's dirt beneath the dirt"...And my favourite part "Can you hack your mind being riddled with the wrong memories?"
"And I elongated my lift home, Yeah, I let him know the long way round, I smelt your scent on the seat belt And kept my shortcuts to myself." Just heartbreakingly genius, I'm so glad he said Cornerstone
How do people think Arabella is not written well? Yes, his writing style has changed, but only just a smidge. I personally think it's amazing. His music is basically poetry, it's fantastic.
No buses. I'm quite surprised I haven't seen this mentioned in the comments yet. To think he wrote this when he was 17/18 just blows my mind. The lyrics are concise, succinct and beautifully put together and somehow the melancholy of the words matches the chords.
it's really sweet he mentioned Arabella as his favorite lyrics I'm assuming at the time of the interview and the time he was writing those lyrics he was in love and writing them from the heart
Pretty much everything on Humbug is simply stunning to my ears. But the lyrics to 'Secret Door'...combined with those sexy drums, are my idea of perfection.
+Katie Mae i love the end "if you've a lesson to teach me, I'm listenin' ready to learn. There's no one here to police me, I'm sinking in until you return" lol
“And I’ve tried to ask you this in some daydreams that I’ve had, but you are always busy, being make-believe” has got to be my favorite. Love is a laserquest is so beautifully sad, I’m obsessed with it
Cornerstone is definitely upthere for me but Piledriver Waltz,Love is a Laserquest, and No.1 Party Anthem all evoke such strong emotion as well but for the sake of choosing something "shes having a sly indoor smoke cause' she calls the folks, who run this her oldest friends" classic
You used to get it in your fishnets Now you only get it in your night dress Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness Landed in a very common crisis Everything's in order in a black hole Nothing seems as pretty as the past though That Bloody Mary's lacking in Tabasco Remember when he used to be a rascal?
Secret door has some of the coolest lyrics Imo. I also love the story that do me favor tells, and pile driver waltz has some very poetic words. I love all of it!
how can anyone not mention Glass in the Park? Parasalene woman I'm your man in the moon And like a grain of diamond dust you float And my devotion's outer crust cracks
I love cornerstone, it means a lot to me and I'm glad that he mentioned. I also like Stuck On The Puzzle. But its too hard to choose when this man is a lyrical genius
My favorite line would be: "It's not like I'm falling in love, I just want you to do me no good, and you look like you could" And "Forever isn't for everyone, is forever for you" Alex, you have no idea how poetic you are✨
If the sun's in your eyes, I'll tighten your blindfold baby, don't worry your foot won't get caught strut carelessly,.... And the entire song is that beautiful, I love Glass in the Park and the Submarine songs, it is like the perfect definition of love to me. And of course among other remarcable songs like Dance little liar, the Suck it and see album... What can I say, Alex lies when he says that he's not a poetry because he is. I love him gosh...
"The smiles as she walked in the room Have all turned into frowns am I too quick to assume That the love is no longer in bloom? The tantrums and the tears play a very different tune To what they did before, her heads red raw And the ending doesn't sound like they're happiest around When you sobbed before it felt much more like the product of a squabble Now there's reason for it to be something more And no would be, oh, it's uncertain Whether the curtain has shut for good She says, "see if it's still raining I'm not dressed for it and if you loved me-" And I interrupt to receive the scowl and stare But still decided to stop her there... Would it be outrageous to say? We're either shouting or we're shagging Locked in tempestuous phase At least that's how we felt yesterday The eyes are getting heavier and whether you're asleep or awake is a mystery Would a kiss be too much to ask? When you fit me as sunday's frozen pitch Fits the thermos flask It's a pity, it just hit me, we can't go back To the chest touching on the back" 'Too much to ask' b-side from 'Flourescent Adolescent'
It's a pitty.. it just hit me we can't go back to the chest touching on the back.. FUCKIN KILLS ME! So underrated and so BEAUTIFUL A THE SAME FUCKIN TIME
"I saw your sister at the Cornerstone, on the phone to the middle man... When I saw that she was on her own.. I thought I should take a chance.... She was close... Boy you couldn't get much closer... She said I'm really not suppose to but yes.... You can call me anything you wannnt...."
"And he'll catapult you back to your daddy or into any hissing misery.. and then he'll tell how the day after a triumph is as hollow as a day after a tragedy" gets me the most.
i love how he listed two of my favorites. I know you're nothing like mine 'Cause she's walking on sunshine And your love would tear us apart And I know I'm not your type 'Cause I don't shun the daylight But, baby, I'm willing to start- You’re So Dark. beautiful song honestly it made me think of my self. Arabella, Cornerstone, Only Ones Who Know, You’re So Dark, Batphone, Anyways , and Snap Out Of It. i love their music and it makes me happy, i don’t think i’ve skipped a single song since i’ve started listening for tha past few years
My favourite line by them of all time: “Yeah but his bird thinks it’s amazing though so all that’s left, Is the proof that love’s not only blind but deaf” (a little bit mainstream but still my fave)
Fire and the thud!!!!!!!! ''The day after you stole my heart, Everything I touched told me it would be better shared with you With you... And now you're hiding in my soup And the book reveals your face And there's a splashing in my eyelids As the concentration continually breaks I did request the mark you cast Didn't heal as fast I hear your voice in silences Will the teasing of the fire Be followed by the thud?''
+Mikayel Mkrtchyan And it was up, up and away Oh, but it's right hard to remember That on a day like today when you're all argumentative And you've got the face on
i'm OBSESSED with that line that goes "there's only music so that there's new ringtones" and "you talk the talk alright, but do you walk the walk of catch the train",, i don't k ow what it is about them, they just make me feel so many forbidden emotions
When he said Cornerstone I shouted YES! cos it's exactly what I thought. Alex Turner you are a lyrical genius, and you need 2 give yourself more credit.
"They are all infected but he'll be alright" "Lady, where has your love gone? I was looking but can't find it anywhere" "Are you pulling her from a burning building" Or throwing her to the sharks" "I saw your sister on the Cornerstone" "And do you look into the mirror to remind yourself you're there?" "The mixture hits you hard Don't get that sinking feeling Don't fall apart"
Those two wondrous tunes are my favorite tracks. And will likely always stay favorable in heart🥰. Can hardly get enough of TLSP “Miracle Aligner” lately. Yum!!!
this is the pain i felt when i asked for a letter of recommendation and was asked in return to draft something up that the recommender could edit lmao no one likes talking about themselves like that
Do I Wanna Know is a good one too, just as Despair In The Departure Lounge (is an old one, but is amazing how he made the lyrics), The Afternoon's Hat is very good. I agree with Cornerstone, Exept for the part that i haven't met someone that could be the sister of that girl who send me to "Cornerstone".
505: "Stop and wait a sec, oh, when you look at me like that my darlin', what did you expect? I'd probably still adore you with your hands around my neck... Or I did last time I checked?"
I like all of their songs. Buy my favs are Do me a favour, 505, Suck it and see and Do i wanna know :)) But whatever they sing, it sounds perfect to me.
''Does anyone even wanna know what i think about it?'' YESSSS! WE ALL WANT TO KNOW ALEX.
Do I Wanna Know?
Yes.
Lol
Yeah I thought is he serious? Like he has fans who want to know
And people say he acts like a douchebag? He's too humble to even say what his favorite lyrics he's written are
Kacey Brown Amen.
+Kacey Brown He's my favourite artist. I'd never choose a douchebag as my favourite artist.
Nicole B i've never seen him act like a douchebag
It's not the he acts like a douchebag so much as him saying he's "proud to be from Sheffield," when at every opportunity acts like some Pseudo-American ie: something that he's not, like he's trying to separate himself from his earlier life. Someone please remember him that he's the one who wrote Only Ones Who Know, 505, Cornerstone and Do Me a Favour.
literally!
Yaaaaass!!
505 is still amazing. It gets better and better somehow.
He did mention cornerstone tbf
505 is the reason i live
I felt a little sad when he said, "I don't know, does anyone even wanna know what I think about it?" Like underneath all the leather jacket and hair gel, he's still the same kid who's too afraid to share his lyrics to his bandmates out of fear that they'll take the mick out of him.
Fuck yeah. You're absolutely right!
and I wanted to scream: this is ALL I ever wanted to know -PLEASE tell me more!!!!

I somehow knew he'd say cornerstone too!
"And when she needs a shelter from reality she takes a dip in my daydreams"
It's when you see them written down without the music, it just hits you - the guy's an absolute poet
I also love the bridge with the "that's magic in a cheetah print coat" verses
it's funny he questioned if anybody was actually curious about that because one of the main reasons i listen to Arctic Monkeys is because of the lyrical content. it's modern poetry put to a catchy tune, and i adore it.
I agree with him on arabella. the whole space analogy in it is so pretty
"But I crumble completely when you cry"- 505
and "Be cruel to me, cause I'm a fool for you." -Suck it and See
I love these lines as much as I like him singing these lines.
chilllmilll exactly !
AmilliAmili yeah, and "the day after you stole my heart, everything I touched told me it would be better share with you"

"You're rarer than a can of dandelion & burdock, and those other girls are just post-mix lemonade."
It's so hard to properly explain how well Alex has managed to capture British social culture in his lyrics.
"I wanna brick by brick, brick by brick."
Violet Elaine haha that's one of the stupidest lyrics coming from him
To be fair, that song was literally just them having fun and making a banger tune. They weren't too focused on lyrics.
I.D.S.T is the best lyrics, followed by Death Ramps
@@kingexcrementus4268 Yeah. It was them trying to make a song with a maximum of only 70 different words
@@rayandsunflowers174 oh yeahh
I love cornerstone, it means a lot to me and I'm glad that he mentioned. I also like Stuck On The Puzzle. But its too hard to choose when this man is a lyrical genius
"You're not from New York City, you're from Rotherham"
Matthew Smith fakes tales of sf \m/
The jewellers hands has some of the most impressive imagery I’ve seen anywhere in a song
505 ? Suck it and see ? Love is a laserquest ? etc those song make me cry dude
My favorite line would be:
"It's not like I'm falling in love, I just want you to do me no good, and you look like you could"
And
"Forever isn't for everyone, is forever for you"
Alex, you have no idea how poetic you are✨
If the sun's in your eyes, I'll tighten your blindfold baby,
don't worry your foot won't get caught
strut carelessly,....
"The smiles as she walked in the room
Have all turned into frowns am I too quick to assume
That the love is no longer in bloom?
The tantrums and the tears play a very different tune
To what they did before, her heads red raw
And the ending doesn't sound like they're happiest around
When you sobbed before it felt much more like the product of a squabble
Now there's reason for it to be something more
And no would be, oh, it's uncertain
Whether the curtain has shut for good
She says, "see if it's still raining
I'm not dressed for it and if you loved me-"
And I interrupt to receive the scowl and stare
But still decided to stop her there...
Would it be outrageous to say?
We're either shouting or we're shagging
Locked in tempestuous phase
At least that's how we felt yesterday
The eyes are getting heavier and whether you're asleep or awake is a mystery
Would a kiss be too much to ask?
When you fit me as sunday's frozen pitch
Fits the thermos flask
It's a pity, it just hit me, we can't go back
To the chest touching on the back"
'Too much to ask'
b-side from 'Flourescent Adolescent'
TOO MUCH TO ASK !!! That song fucking kills you...
YES THAT SONG IS SO UNDERRATED I CAN BARLEY FIND ANY VIDEOS OF THEM PERFORMING IT LIVE :(
+Deadandr3 True "when you fit me like Sundays frozen pitch fits the thermos flask" fucking beautiful
"...You can call me anything you wan...T"*
Sorry for the correction.
+coolestcatintheroom "I thought she might understand " sorry as well lol
"And he'll catapult you back to your daddy or into any hissing misery.. and then he'll tell how the day after a triumph is as hollow as a day after a tragedy" gets me the most.
i love how he listed two of my favorites.
I know you're nothing like mine
'Cause she's walking on sunshine
And your love would tear us apart
And I know I'm not your type
'Cause I don't shun the daylight
But, baby, I'm willing to start- You’re So Dark. beautiful song honestly it made me think of my self.
Arabella, Cornerstone, Only Ones Who Know, You’re So Dark, Batphone, Anyways , and Snap Out Of It. i love their music and it makes me happy, i don’t think i’ve skipped a single song since i’ve started listening for tha past few years
My favourite line by them of all time:
“Yeah but his bird thinks it’s amazing though so all that’s left,
Is the proof that love’s not only blind but deaf” (a little bit mainstream but still my fave)
somebody told the stars you're not coming out tonight so they found a place to hide
+Angie Kay "pack away a laugh like a key under the mat, but it never seems to be there when you want it"
Pack away a laugh, like a key under the Matt 😂😂😂😂
Aadarsh Nemana Oh gosh nooooo hehehehe
Yes brilliant lyric!
he should have said 505
Fuzz yeah dude
Fire and the thud!!!!!!!!
''The day after you stole my heart,
Everything I touched told me it would be better shared with you
With you...
And now you're hiding in my soup
And the book reveals your face
And there's a splashing in my eyelids
As the concentration continually breaks
I did request the mark you cast
Didn't heal as fast
I hear your voice in silences
Will the teasing of the fire
Be followed by the thud?''
From Ritz to Rubble has my favorite lyrics that Turner has done...that opening verse is insanely good
"I've seen your frown and it's like looking down the barrel of a gun and it goes off"
+Alex Lynch And out come all these words oh there's a rather pleasant side to you a side I much prefer lol
+Abigail Weller one that laughs and jokes around
remember cuddles in the kitchen? yeah, to get things off the ground
+Abigail Weller one that laughs and jokes around
remember cuddles in the kitchen? yeah, to get things off the ground
+Mikayel Mkrtchyan
And it was up, up and away
Oh, but it's right hard to remember
That on a day like today when you're all argumentative
And you've got the face on
+Doge though i'm sorry i was late
Literally any song that he wrote could make the list. He has such a beautiful poetic way to tell a story!
I love this guy so much
suck it and see and despair in the departure lounge are my favorites
i'm OBSESSED with that line that goes "there's only music so that there's new ringtones" and "you talk the talk alright, but do you walk the walk of catch the train",, i don't k ow what it is about them, they just make me feel so many forbidden emotions
Cornerstone really a good shout. Good melody while lyric is concise and simple yet it manage to fit the full story which is quite romantic.
Hehe Arabella is my favorite off the new album and Cornerstone has always been one of my favs in general! Glad to know we like them both
Cornerstone’s chorus and bridge are absolutely amazing. The verses are also great. It’s by far my favourite song of all time.
"Does anyone even wanna know what i think about it?" Who DOESNT want to know? He is too harsh on himself 💗
When he said Cornerstone I shouted YES! cos it's exactly what I thought. Alex Turner you are a lyrical genius, and you need 2 give yourself more credit.
Cornerstone makes me depressed as shit every time I think about it. I’ll literally be vibing and I’ll think “I elongated my lift home” and I’m sad
Im so in love with Alex, he is so sweet 🥺
yes baby we know ure most proud of cornerstone. we all are xx
"And when she needs a shelter from reality she takes a dip in my daydreams".
- Arabella
Star treatment off the new album, unreal
Ive just started to listen to Arctic Monkeys and i do really enjoy Sculptures of anything goes.
Pff, everyone knows his best lyrics are "good morning cheeseburger"
Alex should be proud of all the songs he wrote sinceramente
"They are all infected but he'll be alright"
"Lady, where has your love gone?
I was looking but can't find it anywhere"
"Are you pulling her from a burning building"
Or throwing her to the sharks"
"I saw your sister on the Cornerstone"
"And do you look into the mirror to remind yourself you're there?"
"The mixture hits you hard
Don't get that sinking feeling
Don't fall apart"
Those two wondrous tunes are my favorite tracks. And will likely always stay favorable in heart🥰. Can hardly get enough of TLSP “Miracle Aligner” lately. Yum!!!
love is a laserquest is my top fave. it really gets me in the feels. 😭😭😭
“idk, does anyone even wanna know what i think about it?” aw, course we do alex lad
this is the pain i felt when i asked for a letter of recommendation and was asked in return to draft something up that the recommender could edit lmao no one likes talking about themselves like that
Do I Wanna Know is a good one too, just as Despair In The Departure Lounge (is an old one, but is amazing how he made the lyrics), The Afternoon's Hat is very good. I agree with Cornerstone, Exept for the part that i haven't met someone that could be the sister of that girl who send me to "Cornerstone".
The afternoon's hat is amazing! it's just me or this one has a strange connection with fireside (the instrumental stuff)?
Arabella is a song to be proud of. It's a masterpiece
Damn it! Look how he(Alex) carries himself!
"He became laughter's assassin, shortly after he showed you what it was"
"Makes me wanna blow the candles out, just to see if you blow in the dark"
"GOOD MORNING, CHEESEBURGER" - She Looks Like Fun
Honestly that just hits different
Love is a Laserquest, definitely
Love is a Laserquest
"I wish I would have seen you in the bakery. But if I had seen you in the bakery, you probably wouldn't have seen me."
My favorite lyrics are from Crying Lightning... i tried reading instead of singing it and it was just surreal
No buses. Despair in the departure lounge.Leave before the lights..
20 second unskippable ad for a 56 second video. Love UA-cam.
CORNERSTONE IS MY FAVOURITE SONGGG
Mostly of the songs in AM and their b-sides are brutal lirically, Despair in the departure lounge and 505 are amazing as well.
The nights were mainly made for saying things that you can't say tomorrow day
Humbug and Suck It And See are lyrical masterpieces in my opinion.
love him
