- Today we take a look at a recent development since Blizzard's re-partnership with China and how they have censored several cards for their servers. We explore the history of censorship in Hearthstone and how it has impacted the game, and may continue to going forward.

I mean what is the real alternative? Obviously we can call companies shills for wanting that sweet Chinese market, but they are in part doing this because there are people in China who want to play Blizzard games. Besides, they’re obviously not happy about it, otherwise they’d have taken a more conservative, censored approach to their card art for a while now.

I'll never buy the "Hearthstone's own artstyle" excuse. Not when we literally have Leeroy with it's completely different artstyle to literally every other card in the game and being left untouched.
As far as overall art design goes... I do wish there was more serious and cool stuff. Having fun stuff is okay, but it feels like the past few years the game has been coming off as a joke instead of a reference to Warcraft (Especially the LoE stuff where all the heroes and villains are bumbling idiots. Galakrond is the only thing that came from it that wasn't a complete doofus)
They literally have different artstyles because some of the art is from the TCG
It's just me or the current artworks became more cartoonish? Where's the Alex Horley kinda of style? The arts are very well drawn but the RPG feeling is kinda lost nowadays.
Old-school MTG art will always be the best.
A lot of the old art is from the WoW TCG
The cartoon art style make HS unique when compared with its competitors like MTG. And HS being on mobile means a lot of kid and parents become the target demographic instead of sweaty gamer so I think it’s a good decision to change the art direction to be more friendly to wider audiences.
The art's been like this for like half a decade now, starting from the Witchwood. I guess it reads better from a distance than highly-detailed and realistic artwork.

Oh yea, because changing the art for the DK spellstone is to make the art more "cohesive", I don't understand why the shitty cover ups instead of just owning what you did and why you did it as a company...
Did you watch the same video I did? The dk spellstone is China-only bc they have very strict censorship laws. The changes from years ago were the "cohesiveness" thing, and the recent cards are in China only
yeah, they turned a blood gem card art ike the spellstone into one that is basically unholly if you only pay atention to it, and it doesnt make any sense with its current gem, which i asume will be purple instead of red because "oh no, blood!, CENSURE!"

except its true though, broken clocks and all, its very well documented that chinese have a lot of censorships, cant depict walking skeletons or supernatural stuff, so lols karthus wears a mask; wow forsaken and abombs covered up, not even stitched, and that was before legion or bfa with the new intact forsaken option; dota2 skeleton king is now wraith king and has low violence mode so people like clinkz, lich, lifestealer, pudge, pugna are covered up

The game started out true to the original warcraft theme, as in dark fantasy. It's literally a children's game now. Colours! Happy music! Cheerful cards! Yippie!
It's like, I get it, if it's the theme of an expansion. Kharazan was not dark fantasy either. But damn. Most cards now look like characters out of children's cartoons.
I liked the more world of warcraft style of art in hearthstone, it’s sad they feel the way to change things.
I mean I’m fan of the Diablo art and lore stuff so it kinda makes sense.
They should had an option to have old artworks in game
I did a bit of quick research on this and as far as the skeletons go in China it's considered a sign of bad luck or that bad things are coming so making the skeletons not human is a way to get around that. It's also seen as gross and the comparable I've seen for north american culture would be portraying little girls in sexy bikinis. It's that level of repulsive to that audience.
There's laws in a few countries about not having realistic blood in games. It wouldn't surprise me if China has that and I remember from working in games QA that Germany has laws like that as well.
The sexiness I want to say is still fallout from the sexual harassment lawsuit but it'd be weird that it's OK in something as recent as badlands then changed now. Could also be something legal or cultural related to china

thats an american thing actually, ever since camel cigarettes or something they did which caused some people to make a law about how you cant show drugs for a t rated or pegi 12 or whatever for games because children; think about the old disney movies and how people used to smoke in them, but that doesnt happen anymore

Not just Graves, but Tychus too. Tychus had his iconic cigar removed in HotS because of Chinese censorship.

Only china art censorship was existent very early like some of the grand tournament cards were censored even
personally missed the jaina and eviscerate changes cause that cleavage is on a tiny icon and same with those tiny drops of blood... havent even seen the secretkeepers art work change earlier cause its played or generated so rarely... im sure i have seen the harpy after the change but didnt register it has changed since i havent seen that much of it either...
the other changes i had noticed and disliked.... especially the head crack one... i actually still have a head crack centered deck in my deck lists that i havent played in ages... need to update that deck list some day and try it out for fun again....
Secretkeeper’s change never made sense to me since they changed it to a “un-Jaina’d” woman.
They have the time to censor harmless art, and yet they can't balance or bug fix a single damn thing.

And somehow, this isn't as bad as some of the edits Konami had to make to Yugioh TCG. Konami would've had to cover more of the art for a lot of these cards or remove any symbols or references of death.
I must be old because I don't even recognise the new artwork.

I feel like it absolutely will change the art direction of the game. At some point they are going to say this is a lot of work to maintain and create 2 versions of every art for the game. Going forward we will only make art that is acceptable in the China market to cut our cost and workload in half.

I’m a new player so I’m shocked that there was even worse center art because I only know the new ones and also I don’t even knew there was World of Warcraft trading card game where the assets were imported😮

For the most part, I see this as a non-issue. I'm generally a fan of less sexualization in total, but I'll agree some of these changes are overkill.
To be honest, I think Jaina looked better/more attractive after the shirt got added. There are ways to do the bra-less look that work well, but I never felt like the original did.
The Mistress of Fury change I think also looks nicer, though it is obviously not as faithful to the source model from WoW; to me it fits the theming of the concubine rooms inside of Black Temple a bit better, anyway.
The Eonar change (again, similar to the Mistress of Fury change) also feels more appropriate for the game, and I'd argue even looks better/has more style.
I have no defense for the ogre change. That one is criminal. Like, larger women with larger breasts exist, and this is how some clothes are just going to fit/look on them. I actually feel like this one, ironically, was one of the most realistic.
As far as the more gorey/violent ones... I guess that's just their ministry of culture at work, and there's not much of a way of getting around that. I definitely miss some of the old arts for things like Headcrack and Deadly Shot. Also, while I think the change to Bite's art makes sense and was probably right to do, I do like the old art for it.
One final card I'll mention is the Succubus/Felstalker one. I think it would have been nice for them to make them each a different card. A lot of these original demons are part of the Warlock's class kit in WoW (each has been a "pet" you could summon to deal damage and provide some measure - and different! - of utility). You could argue that Mistress of Pain is a replacement for it... but it's not, entirely. So, I'm happy that they added a Felstalker, because at that point in time it was certainly one of the Warlock's missing summons, but I feel like it would've been a nice opportunity to maybe add a new utility to each card. They may have been scared of adding a Silence keyword to the Warlock's class kit, but it would have fit the flavor of Felstalker so very well.

I like some of these changes, the green gems and mist looks cool, but some of them I will miss the old art if they change them for the other servers. But if censoring them in this way brings in more players and supports HS more, then I'm all for it.
I'm also a new player, so it's easy for me to not be attached to older art

Honestly, I actually think that the censorship thing sometimes is just great. That's just a bit of skin, most people should be able to tolerate it. If it is purely pornographic, then i will understand the censorship thing. This is only my opinion.

I like the card art of most cards. Except for gore aka undead cards like scourge rager. Organs stay hidden inside the body, not outside! That's why I hate zombie movies.

Looking back at succubus and mistress of pain, they do look very out of place in hearthstone, what's not out of place however are skeletons, if they take away my skeletons, i will give them osteoporosis.
The only change I'm kinda on board with is the Succubus to Felstalker. I just love them. The rest is ridiculous. Leave boobies alone.
Okay, i just want to say they should give us the choice, to pick how are card look. Just make it a filter. Why can't we as players be allowed to Filter how we want are cards to look.
I feel like all of these censors should be removed and just add more cards, so you can have cool cards with all kinds of styles and directions. Like none of these seemed tbad enough to warrant a change
while i prefer the older art direction of the game (could be my nostalgia for the warcraft card game) i don't really care. if i could have it my way id like much more 'edgy art' or just stuff that looks cool. seb mikinnon is one of my fav mtg artists

So for me personally I really dont care abaout this kind of censorship. I play Hearthstone for the gameplay and not the violence or the boobas. There are many good artworks in Hearthstone but they are not the main reason for me to play the game. They are more of a little bonus and the way they censor them (at least for the newer ones) is so minor that I would barely notice. Hearthsone was always a mix between fun and dark themes.
I mean just look at the most recent expansions: Whizbang and FoL are funny, Titans and March of the Lichking are dark, Badlands is somehow between those two with a slight tendance towards funny. This goes way back to the beginning:
Rastakhan between funny and dark but slightly more funny, Uldum more funny, Descent of Dragons and Rise of Shadows were dark, etc.
So I am really fine with Hearthstone not beeing too serious/violent.
The only thing about the new censorship that makes me whonder is the change to Blood Plague and the Spellstone. Because the color red and blood are themes that are widely spread among all DK cards because its one of the Runes. So I wonder if they also change many more (or maybe all) of the bloodcards or the symbol to being purple instead of red and that would be a change I would complain about but I hope they wont do this.

I think you mean couple of billion dollars instead. Last I checked, before the problem, China contribute around 15-25% of Blizzard revenue.
