Judging by your tasting notes, it sounds like more refill sherry casks or American oak sherry casks were used. Nice to see your senses are progressing, Scott. Cheers 🥃🇨🇦🇺🇲
The Lumina is part of the 4 bottle Quest Series (Quest, Lumina, Terra & Enigma) of travel exclusives. On the Secondary market the Lumina sells for around $85 to $95. It probably retails for a bit more.
@@ScotchTestDummies My pleasure. I have the full set. I have opened all but the Enigma. Of the three I have open I go back to the Lumina most. As you stated it is light and very approachable.
"Never judge a dram by its abv!" Well said, guys. I've often been surprised how some 43% malts don't lack for anything (let alone abv) and definitely don't need the extra percentage points (Benromach 10 and Knockando 21 come readily to mind). This one sounds like a lightish Macallan for the summer months, when you don't really need huge dollops of European oak with its big tannins and spicy, mouth-drying notes. Great to see that Scott's palate is slowly but steadily progressing week by week. And I'm relieved to hear that Bart's voice has lost the hoarseness and can now bellow out the "test it" signature at the start of your videos. Have a great weekend! Cheers.
Don't judge a dram by its ABV. Agreed. But when you add the Macallan price things become stinky. This Lumina gimmick costs 102 euros where I live. If it was in a 0.7 l bottle the price would't be roughly 72 euros. Just for the sake of comparison Glenallachie 10 cask strength batch 4 set me back 44 euros. On one side we have heavily marketed, chill filtered, 41.3%ABV, NAS malt with fancy oak foliage ridden cardbox for 102 euro (72 euro for 0.7 l). On the other side we have naturally presented, cask strength, age-stated malt which won the World Whisky Award for best single malt whisky, priced at 44 euros. See where I'm going? Low ABV and chill-filtration neuter the whisky. Full stop. I wouldn't pay more than 30 euros per 70 cl for this or any other Macallan bottled with so low ABV.
Only had one Macallan, i believe 12 years double oak. It was good, and i think you can't go wrong with Macallan, but the prices are to high for me, rather go for less expansive whiskies, like Glen Allachie, Glen Scotia, Aberlour, Glengoyne etc etc
This is how they protect Macallan. Once you open it you can never fully close it back. Almost impossible to replicate it. (refilling it and reselling it)
The cap/cork design is disgusting. Last I heard, they did it for counterfeit purposes but it ruins the bottle for me. Looks incomplete, not fully closed, feels cheap. That & the 12yr Sherry wood bottling for me went from $45 to about $80-90 after the redesign.
I got a bottle of this for my birthday!! Will Cherish it!
Great to have you adding flavor notes again Scott!
BaBoom
they’re 4 whiskies in this collection starting at $80 and goes up to $250, ABV varies from 40% to 44.9% and all different types of casks. Cheers!
Thanks

Boom
I’ve seen this one in airports and ignored it based on price/NAS/ABV ratio… I‘ll consider it next time. Great review, thanks
BOOM
It is amazing to me that their 12 yr sherry cask finish is their best value, most available, and one of the best scotches available at any price.
Boom
Yep thats the only one I will buy. If you can find the old brown box ones they are even better

Great information Kevin. Thank you.

We understand
The Beatles of booze . Nice review as always.
Thank you Jay!!!
I do like this one. But they're pretty much all good
Good to know
The 12 Sherry Oak is available again in Canada after a long absence. It retails in Quebec for $150 Canadian. Ouch!!!
That is up there
Ouch !
Same in Ontario

Ahh. Very interesting
tHat's luminous...

The cork is like that so that people cannot try to refill is and sell fakes. So once open it does not go back the the original position. Nice review.
Ahh...very interesting. Makes since. I like a clean cork line but this will help prevent fakery

Yikes. Yep I kept trying to fix the cap
Teeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeestinggggggggggggggggg
Sweeeeettttttttt
Horrible overpriced and very, very mediocre single malt. Definately not recommended.
