PJ Tucker - Defensive Dynamo 19/20

- P.J. Tucker. 6’5” Center for the Houston Rockets. Astoundingly, Tucker does not have a single All-Defense selection in the NBA on his resume. The eye test alone would likely tell you that Tucker takes on every matchup thrown his way. P.J. plays whoever comes his way; in last year’s playoff seres against the Golden State Warriors, Tucker took times guarding 7 foot Kevin Durant (MVP, 2x Finals MVP, 4x Scoring Champion), Stephen Curry (Greatest Shooter of All-Time, 2x MVP), as well as multiple time All-Stars Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala, and Draymond Green. Each with a wildly different offensive game, each one reasonably taken out of their comfort zone by P.J.’s defense. Steve Kerr talked about how Houston had a lot of “middle linebackers on that team” (article below). Tucker does exactly that: he’s the leader defensively, the another, tasked with stopping the run/ball, and is THE key communicator.
P.J. is very much the journeyman, having been drafted by the Toronto Raptors, gone through the NBA Developmental League, playing overseas in places like Israel, Ukraine, Greece, Italy, and Germany. He returned to the league to play for the Suns for 5 seasons, had a season with the Raptors, and has finally found his home in Houston as the small ball center who can do it all on defense.
Watch P.J.’s hands throughout this video - they are UNREAL. Kawhi Leonard and LeBron James are two of the strongest players in the league but he is able to rip the ball from them. I imagine it helps that he’s been able to practice against James Harden day in and day out, given that Harden’s strength is grossly underrated and his skillset is incredibly unique. Tucker’s footwork and timing are terrific as well - take note of how often he beats guys to spots to cut off driving lanes or to draw charges. Chances are this is equal parts instinct/intelligence and preparation by way of watching film and learning tendencies. The last part of the video isn’t even about blocks or steals, it’s about contesting shots - watch how he gets his body set and pulls his hands back and up. If he’s going to jump, he’s jumping to contest and avoids going into the offensive player’s space. He’s smart, savvy, and so so good. Plus, he’s the sneaker GOAT.
In a video where he’s practicing with Team USA (link below), he preaches talking and even *OVER*talking defensively. That type of non-stop communication is the foundation for a great defense.

Also. I know 6:05 is weird because it just looks like LeBron loses it - but it's LeBron. Watch it slowly. LeBron doesn't have the ball as he goes up with it. That's a strip.
I also know that 2:18, Reid doesn't actually make contact, but Tucker sure as hell sells the call and that's why it's in here.
PJ Tucker works really hard for the Rockets, he deserves a ring for his effort
This aged well
@@e3ng682 yessir he got one now
And now he has one

Great video . Finally someone is highlighting the value of PJ and what he does for our rockets team
One of the best oh ball defenders in the league, love his defence
On ball*
Tucker main strength lies in his versatility. His defence on the block is even more impressive
Stanley Enemuo Yup he reminds me of draymond without the playmaking of course
I never realized pj had such great hands
There's a lot of great defensive forward today like Kawhi, PG, Draymond, and Giannis. He will get his All-Defensive Team Selection soon.
His defense is still known to everyone though. I love how he swipes the ball accurately when someone is taking the shot like what Iguodala does. I still can't do that regularly. That's the one I really want to learn.
you are just bad if u cant do that get another passion
I don't play basketball a lot but I love watching NBA.
@@nofuture_at_allfeel like most players who don't swipe are trash
@@JiaruiChen_ you're dumb af
Just watch how your opponent brings up the ball or layup... I do that I watch how they always bring up the ball but it's pree much gambling everytime you swipe you have to swipe once they either make contact or into a Jump Shot timing is key
Hands are strong and quick.
On defense he is like the modern day Dennis Rodman with great hustle and feel for the game as an undersized small-ball "center".
Hes similar to Chuck Hayes , very string base so most guys are shooting off balance when they try to Post him up. This is why Tatum struggle vs him
PJ Tucker was such a valuable player on defence and was a good catch-shoot player. His play went under the radar for a while until recently
Was waiting for this one, thank u man 🙏
Man i was looking forward to see on how this small ball rockets would work in the playoffs smh
Great stuff man this channel always has great content.
On another note as a Knicks fan id be willing to make the assumption that Randle is one of PJs favorite people to guard... A strip waiting to happen haha
Yeah. He does that spin move shit ever single fucking play(knicks fan)
Another great video.
I requested this!!😆
No wonder he's such a pain in the ass on 2k20 😂
He is my role model
Thats some high powered defense
PJ Jrue Giannis LMAOOOOOOO crazy
PJ Bam Jimmy LMAOOOOOOO crazy

Great video
Do a video on Marcus Smart guarding bigs like Embiid, Giannis, Porzingis or any other small defender guarding bigs. Something like Mismatches
I'd love to but that I already made my Marcus Smart defense video (ua-cam.com/video/w_U6vFyTz7A/v-deo.html), and Tomasz Kordylewski already made a dope one of those: ua-cam.com/video/elshVMYAKwA/v-deo.html
I agree 100% bro
@@EvinGualberto I was looking for that video haha thanks
Great content like always oh is a beast but he is older now next season I think he should do like iggy just focus on defense.
never knew he could defend like this
You just loose against 6'5 PJ Tucket at center!
Pj tucker and Marcus smart on the Celtics together would be a lethal defense
I think he's going to the Sixers. Embiid, Simmons, Thybulle, Danny Green. Wow.
@@johnsondoeboy2772 w prediction
@@msdd7610 I forgot all about this lol
One of the few people that slide there feet and don't hand check
I think I’m in love
This man is like next genaration denis rodman
Nah. He's just another solid junkyard defender in the vein of Ron Arrest. Dennis was that, plus the best rebounder in the NBA.
he is my favorite player
Do u like embiid?
Random Guy why
@@ShikasThoughts he is also a top player in basketball.
2:54 why is this an offensive foul? PJ is inside the restric area
More defensive videos please
Do a anthony davis, point guard skills or defensive dynamo
got other people coming up first, but I am working on AD vids. Slowly but surely.
@@EvinGualberto okay man, hoping that horror in the post or guard skills
@@EvinGualberto appreciate it man, keep the videos coming please 💯🤝🏽
Evin Gualberto who u got comin ??

he better make first team all defense
Could you do a rebounding video?
Like PJ Tucker rebounding or rebounding in general? If you mean the latter, do you mean like offensive rebounding or just boxing out?
Evin Gualberto rebounding in general. I guess a mix of both would be good. Could have like Russell Westbrook maybe
ı have one question marcus smart vs pj tucker
Kelly oubre two way video ?
Quick Hands
What if PJ Tucker gets DPOY
Pj tucker should be defensive player hehe
Why play D when you can just fall and get whistles? I say this as a compliment. It's smart D. Marcus Smart D.
Defense is more that just blocks & steals, its main objective is to stop your opponent from scoring legally. Charge is a criminally underrated defense tactic that the great Shane Battier was known for.
Can't the opposing teams simply post up against him and pump fake then shoot over him? Or is it a lot harder than it sounds? I'm guessing in addition to IQ, he's able to play the 5 because of his wingspan and vertical at 6'5".
Yea it’s definitely not that easy, rockets and PJ “front” the post so he’ll get steals if you try passing to your big on the block. Plus he’s got a 6’10 wingspan and crazy lateral quickness
@@Stringerbell199 Good points
Better defender than Draymond
do a ben vídeo
Thats why the small ball can win lakers
I think the rockets should pick up kris Dunn... kris Dunn with pj ticket and let Westbrook or harden run the offense ... perfect match
Fck sáke why is it all charge fouls
