My one and so far only visit was in December 1980 for Christmas and New Year’s. I was 20 and so excited to be in The City. How I wish I could rewind the clock and experience that era again. 🌹
1987 was an epic year for me.......man I miss those days......just order me up a time machine and I will gladly walk back into the past of NYC.........hell I'd more than be happy to walk back into 1987 in Cincinnati .....my home town...!!!
The year I first visited the city... Woolworths lunch counters and the tshirt machines in the window...Lamstons stores.. Lol i loved it.. Energy on every street....excitement around every corner..... I bought me an RCA Walkman on 5th Ave.... Never forget those days
Thank you for this wonderful video. I lived in New York for 5 years from 1989, so I enjoyed it very much as many of the scenes are familiar to me. I am also making my own documentary about New York City in the early 1990s, so it was very interesting to watch.
While living in New York, I found that movie to be the most uncomfortable to watch. Anyone in NYC who commuted on a daily basis might how found this movie very taxing to say the least!
@@ToddMcDurmont why? because of the pre-Thanksgiving rush hour to get a cab? Lol 😂 it didn’t look too bad, except for maybe the scene on Park Avenue when the yellow cab runs over his briefcase… the lawyer who offered to give his cab up for $75 was funny but stretching believability…. :)
Is it me who recently had a kind of obsessive frustration at not having lived in NYC in the 80's / 90's or having had the opportunity to live in NYC? knowing that we cannot go back in those years and that the nyc of his years there completely changed the cars the clothes the habits of the people of his years I find it almost sad in a way and the networks have destroyed this human relationship
@@creepythinman1978 i agree , exactly a personnality unique in fact but NYC is nyc still remains unique and a magnificent city unique in the world clearly
I remember going to NYC in the 80's quite a bit as a kid. One of the strangess things I've noticed and kind of missed in an odd way when I went back is that it doesn't smell the same and the lights are different lol. Back in the day there was more of a food/smoke smell happening with eerie yellow lights that were comfortable on the eyes. Now all the lights remind me of those white prison yard lights.
1987 my freshman year in college (Trenton State...not TCNJ:) I would take the train every Friday and walk around...tower records, the village, strand book store etc...thanks for this video!
Oh wow! There is no doubt I passed by you many times! I'll bet you had your hands full with all that expensive jewelry. That's pretty cool! Hey, I did buy a couple of fake Cartier watches off the street for lady friends back home. They LOVED them. Of course I told them that they were fake and believe it or not, they worked for several years! Nothing like the real thing though!
If you look at the Times Square footage I took, you'll briefly see one of those fake watch hustlers, displaying those watches. It got so bad that you could buy in bulk, down around 14th and Canal, in China Town. I never did but I bought a few holiday gifts. They were a hit...until they quit!! LOL!
This is great. I have been to NYC a number of times, but the city I saw growing up in the UK is from this time period. Now I get to see it all over again.
HaHa. Sure was delish no matter where they came from, lol. Did you ever stop by for a hotdog from the guy selling them on Times Square storefront? Forgot the name. Also from Papaya's if I got the name right. They were also delish.
OMG, those Papaya's were killer! I LOVED them! And yes, I did try the hot dogs from the guy selling them. You took your life in your own hands, eating that garbage but man, it was good! Big risks in the big city!
I was 19 years old in 1987, and it was the best year ever!!
New York in 1987. I was having a blast. Ah youth

I worked at 50th and Lex at the time. Those were the days . Worked in Manhattan 1982-2015.
It looked like that was a great era especially to have worked in Manhattan.
Incredible footage i was not born yet until 1991 time is an illusion so much has changed but at the same time it hasn't wow life is weird

Me too. I'd go back in a second.
Same. Back when Nintendo was the big thing and Mike Tyson looked indestructible.
I hear Cincinnati is a great place.

“Planes, Trains and Automobiles” was released on November 25, 1987 and was filmed in New York City, so this is the New York City of that time.

Tauscher Chocolatier has always been my favorite shop at Rockefeller Center.

I wish I was in New York City in 1987 and Ohio.

The most noticeable difference from today in nyc is the style of the yellow cabs. And the name on the 30 Rock building.
Great video. I used to work at Cartier as a security agent back in 1988.

Yeah. The fake Cartier watches were being sold on top of blankets along 42nd street, Lol. Now you need a permit to sell anything.

5:57 The old green and white Bell Telephone trucks.
Hey Todd - did you shoot this footage? If not, where is it from?
Yes, I shot all of it.
And no bloody idiots walking into people while looking at their phones!
it's precious, indeed
I remember those Federal Express trucks as a lil kid
ROY rogers and no stupid bike lanes
I would love one of those vintage Letterman shirts around 13:30.
I wonder who owns all those Rolex's now.
Those souvlaki's were delicious especially when combined with gyro meat.
They great thing is that you had NO idea what the actual meat was but they were delish!
