- The United Nations says world leaders must adopt a rescue planto save the badly lagging Sustainable Development Goals. This year marks the midway point for implementing the goals aimed at protecting the planet and its people. According to the latest data, however, the targets are way off track.

Before the SDGs, there were the Millennium Goals. 2015 was targeted period. The goals haven’t been achieved. They have rebranded and become SGDs for 2030.
The Millennium development goals were actually considered pretty successful and achieved great gains. They were always shoot for the moon type goals so perfectly reaching every one wasn't really going to happen.
The Sustainable Development Goals do contain the bones of some of the old Millennium Goals, but they are also much wider in scope. Would be a very strange way to rebrand a "failed" project given how many more ambitious new goals they added to the project.

Poverty decreases with a vibrant ecconomy. Forcing many sdg or penalties on an ecconomy reduces that ecconomys efficency.
This ambitious TO DO list is very important. The main reasons the SDGoals have not been met is because of lack of political will by government leaders, lack of financial commitment, lack of good governance, wars aimed at stealing the resources of other nations, corporate greed, and global climate change. The world has the resources to meet the SDGs it is a matter of prioritizing where and how resources are allocated. Rather than spending huge resources on war, we need to Make Peace Profitable. We need to meet the needs of populations everywhere with the resources available. This can be done, it is a matter of popular and political will. There must be a huge paradigm shift to make this possible.

Let's have a referendum in each of the 93 member states to see how well supported the UN Sustainability goals are by ordinary people.
If these referendums turn out in support of the goals, it would give the cause a lot more legitimacy and dispel the suspicion that it is merely a project cooked up by an elite.

Great idea but people have forgotten that they choose a government to represent them. Today, governments make decisions without consulting their citizens. They just say it's for the greater good and uneducated citizens just believe them. Read agenda 2030, but try to understand what it means for you and your family and not what it says. These are two totally different things. An example is Gender equality. It actually means sexual deviance is ok and should be pushed from a young age by schools and teachers.. It doesn't mean equality between men and women. Look at each goal and figure out for yourselves what it ACTUALLY means in reality. You'll soon realize the UN's ultimate goal and it ain't pretty.

I am a middle aged European and ever since I was a kid I have been in a family that donates to Africa and sponsors children etc...but still nothing is getting better and its frustrating.

Most countries in Africa have high public spending and they also have state owned businesses.

If the state didn't spend like it does they wouldn't have to print more money to pay off their debt, your interest rates on your loans are raised to slow down inflation.

From the millennium development goals that where implemented most countries in the global south were less responsive these goals did not come out as planned tobe achieved by 2015 but have been yet again been acknowledged by implementing more goals such as life on land , life under water, and also looking at climate change, industry , innovation and infrastructure.. if these goals do not come out to the implemented year, I guess more policies will be implemented until these things are met, again development is not only about the state but development starts with individual concepts of acknowledging ownership on what has been implemented.. sustainability is the goal big ups to all the international donors and other countries alarming the world

I'm glad Daniel mentioned the IMF and World Bank since these are institutions that shape neo-colonialism globally. It's hard to expect the Global South to pay for development goals when it's paying interest on the loans that it was forced to take, because colonialism took most of their wealth without reparations.This is real reporting!
