    This M7.5 earthquake is the largest to strike Japan since the 2015 Ogasawara earthquake (M7.8).

      @EuroWarsOrg I’m am only guessing but, I think the bulk of the Tsunamis will be generated in the Pacific Ocean, off west coast of the Island.

      At USGS Recent Earthquakes, you get just the numbers. Which included aftershock information.
      There was also a Japanese livestream that featured live cams and official warnings. Admittedly, it wasn't until later that they had pictures of landslides.
      The number if dead and missing is close to 100 at the moment.

    Interesting note about the old style tile roofs in Japan...in the old days they were held in by clay rather than fixed to the roof...that way during an earthquake the heavy tile would come off the roof and lighten the load on the structure. These days they have better construction techniques and standards for the structure of the buildings to handle earthquakes, but I thought it was an interesting bit of history.

    • @davidford3115
      @davidford3115 9 місяців тому +13

      It is interesting, and why modern engineers and architects should not simply discount older practices outright. There is a wisdom in reducing the weight on the load bearing supports, kind of like how modern vehicles will intentionally crush or shatter to dissipate impact energy.

      Small buildings in outlying areas are mostly grandfathered out of modern Japan standards.
      What should be important, is how well their modern buildings held up to a quake this size.
      Where I live, a 7 mag quake in downtown Portland, built on alluvial flows, hundreds of feet deep, will be an ugly scene. Like SO. CAL, we're long overdue. ☮️

    I'm confused as to how this could be an aftershock from a different earthquake from 8 months prior? I would presume they would need to be much closer together, if not when is the cut-off for considering them aftershocks?

    • @AtarahDerek
      @AtarahDerek 9 місяців тому +7

      It was the mainshock, and the previous quake was a foreshock. The mainshock is always the biggest quake in a sequence. Any quake the precedes it and can be proven to be directly related to it is a foreshock.

    I spoke to my friends in Japan just after initial reports of the quake were released around 3am my time. As a many as 2500 persons have been reported as missing from the tsunamis and some waves reached heights of 3 meters. Some Tsunami were anticipated to rise as much as 5 meters locally. My friends and their families are fine and safe. They also told me some shaking was felt in Tokyo and Yokohama. These are not official reports naturally. Just conversations with friends who live there. No nuclear power plants are known to have damage. Though wide spread power outages have occurred. I will share what other "private" information comes from my friends in Japan.

      Update: I posted the above about 3 hours ago. I spoke to my friends in Tokyo and Yokohama, and there are some aftershocks still occurring along with a tsunami threat along the western shore. Not much more than that has been reported. Wide spread power outages and possible damage caused by liquefaction. Which wouldn't be unheard of on the Japanese West Coast. Please don't count these as confirmed reports of that kind of damage. There are multiple videos on social media platforms showing the tsunami and some of the destruction which we have viewed and discerned to be that possible type of damage through our amateur eyes.

    I have a question which you answered a little in the video. The earthquake occured on land and it was a reverse fault with a 3.7m movement (which was mostly vertical). So does that mean the Noto Peninsula (or ocean around it) has increased in level or does it settle back to its original level? I was kinda surprised a tsunami could be generated since it was on the west coast and thus a Megathrust earthquake is unlikely to occur there unlike on the east coast. Has there been large historical tsunamis generated from the west coast and if so how did they occur (answering that is probably a video in itself haha).

    You say the quake was M7.5; the Japan Meteorological Agency reports that it was an M7.6. Why the discrepancy, and is it significant?
    By the way, you (and the media) say “a tsunami”; but perhaps “tsunami event” might be better since there is not one tsunami, but generally a series of them-and the initial wave is not necessarilly the highest.

There is no clear correlation between the solar cycle and earthquakes either here or in the broader planet. @aperson1 Influence of Solar Cycles on Earthquakes
      Tavares, M.
      Abstract
      This research inspects possible influence of solar cycles on earthquakes through of statistical analyses. We also discussed the mechanism that would drive the occurrence of increasing of earthquakes during solar maxima. The study was based on worldwide earthquakes events during approximately four hundred years (1600-2010). The increase of earthquakes events followed the Maxima of Solar cycle, and also depends on the tectonic plate location. From 1600 until 1645 events increased during the Maxima in some of the tectonic plates as Pacific, Arabian and South America. The earthquakes analyzed during two grand solar minima, the Maunder (1645-1720) and the Dalton (1790-1820) showed a decrease in the number of earthquakes and the solar activity. It was observed during these minima a significant number of events at specific geological features. After the last minima (Dalton) the earthquakes pattern increased with solar maxima. The calculations showed that events increasing during solar maxima most in the Pacific, South America or Arabian until 1900. Since there were few records during these three centuries we needed additional analysis on modern data. We took the last four solar cycles events (1950-2010) and made similar calculations. The results agreed with the former calculations. It might be that the mechanism for the Sun-Earth connection relies on the solar wind speed. In both records (1600-1900) and (1950-2010) the results showed a significant increase in earthquakes events in some of the tectonic plates linked to solar maxima. The Solar wind energy striking the Earth's magnetosphere affects the entire environment because the pressure on the region increases and the magnetosphere shrinks sometimes four Earth's radii. This sudden compression causes earthquakes in specific plates. During the times of solar minima the pressure from the solar wind on the earth decreases, then the magnetosphere expands and earthquakes happen in a different pattern according to the geological feature on earth's surface less frequently. Solar driven events include coronal mass ejections (CME) and coronal holes, which are at a maximum during the descending phase of solar activity. The tectonic are important because there is heterogeneity in the crust and the tectonic stress depends on each region. The geo-effectiveness of solar wind from a coronal hole only depends on the position of the hole relative to the Earth and for the CMEs an additional factor is their velocity. The influence of these solar events could be detected from electromagnetic variations on the ground prior the earthquakes. The goal in this research was to show the solar events influenced the earthquakes and seismologic events following some special display and also how the Sun's activity played to make earthquakes increase. This paper discussed details of this mechanism, calculations and associated factors.

      What's the point of that snarky question/comment? It is common knowledge that earthquakes cannot be predicted except on occasion when known stress has built up on a fault line. And in that case when the earthquake will occur is not known.

    • @nekononiaow
      @nekononiaow 9 місяців тому +1

      Cannot be detected *yet* 😉 , we should eventually manage to work out reliable predictive models, it's "just" a matter of figuring out what the relevant data is (assuming climate drift and biodiversity collapse do not massively disrupt us before).
      There are interesting results regarding earthquake prediction related with electric fields. It's been a few year since the corresponding study was published but there seems/seemed to be some electric field variations a little bit before an earthquake occurs, however as I recall it, the signal was very weak so this is far from being a validated hypothesis, I presume this is still being investigated and will require a few years of more precise cumulative data before it can be determined whether this is a statistical glitch or a real phenomenon.
