Frusciante's guitar work across this whole album is some of the best ever recorded I think
I feel that it's their best album for a lot of reasons but the main reason I feel is that it's the album to hit them in their prime.
When a band starts young, they are ambitious but not quite as talented as they could be. Fast forward to now and coming up with new ideas for them has got to be harder, despite being smarter and very skilled. Blood sugar was inbetween alll of that. When the band was VERY ambitious and getting VERY good. Perfect storm to make their best album! A time where they tried super hard and used amazing skill to get it done. You don't see em pull that same stuff off anymore.
That's not to say their new stuff sucks though. It's largely amazing. It's just one album is going to stand out the most and that one is clearly blood sugar.
Mother's Milk is peak imo. That album is incredibly underrated and has the most badass guitar RHCP ever had. But BSSM is a close second!

John is a riff machine! BSSM is a masterpiece, no other RHCP record compares... this is the funkiest of them all
Personally I believe that Californication and Stadium Arcadium has got the best riffs ever

I was a teenager during by the way era, never really got BSSM back then except the two big songs, however finally got into this album properly not long ago, I think it takes more getting into, a grower if you like. Anyway long story short, I got into it and it's clearly the best. I think it's a good spring/ summer album, too funky and jolly for the cold season, yeah.
Someone clearly never heard Mother's Milk... Just listen to Subway To Venus

playing the B cord on the intro of Under the bridge every time you switch to a new chord is the closest to have super powers. Great man!

Hi Ethan. I don't really have anything that I can teach about this technique. It's more about playing that way more than the other way (barre chords). I never payed much attention to the thumb over the neck. Just came naturally.

Very helpful thanks. I think there's a slight mistake in the tab for Funky Monks - Lick 3. At the end I think the 3s and 5s are the other way around, compared to what you're actually playing.

I'll never forgive the original tab release (had drums and bass as well, was huge).
Bloody thing was wrong all over the place for guitar but I'd learned guitar from it. When I bought the newer one years later I couldn't believe how much easier it was to play.
My brain still clicked into the older book automatically. Dunno what amateur they had write that one.
