“Brooklyn broke” can also refer to someone wealthy in Brooklyn who intentionally wears thrifted or lower-end clothing to disguise their wealth or to seem more hip, so there’s a double-meaning in that line.
She says the “scarf” is more of a metaphor for innocence. This is a masterpiece of a song. You actually shouldn’t be with your twin flame. They are intense connections but they are almost like a mirror and eventually bring out the worst parts in each other. They are also both fire signs. The issue with dating a twin flame is that the breakup feels like tearing away pieces of you (ie “did the love affair maim you too?”)
I still listen to both regularly. The 5 min version has a more angry vibe and I love the instrumentation, particularly the guitar. The 10 minute version is sadder and feels more like an emotional release. I love them both for different reasons
I think it’s the exact opposite. The 5 min is so sad but ultimately doesn’t say anything bad about him. It’s about her memory and pain. The 10 min (and the film) is so pointed and angry. She is there to give the dirty details.
I love everyone's reaction to the F the patriarchy line. The way she punctuates it vocally makes a lot of people miss the whole context. "He was tossing me the car keys - F the patriarchy keychain - On the ground"
A soldier who returns half her weight -- is someone missing limbs, blown off in a battle. Think land mines. In those days, Taylor visitied a lot of hospitals (her parents both had cancers). Gyllenhaal had a home in Brooklyn; twin flames -- they are both the same zodiac sign. The song was written during a band rehearsal for her Speak Now tour; that was almost 2 years _after_ her failed relationship with Mayer. It started in October 2010, the month she released Speak Now; and was essentially over by her birthday in December. (There was a reason she was pissed about him preferring "Indie records" more than hers -- she sold over 1.2 million copies of Speak Now in a week). A lot of the Red Album is about the period between 2010 and 2012; by the time she was touring for Red, she'd become close to Harry Styles (and the media went absolutely stupid about her and her dating life).
Also the phrase Brooklyn broke refers to a rich person that wears clothes that don't look like $ (think designer army jackets or vintage jeans/t-shirt.) They cost a lot but, don't look like it. Very much Jake's style at that time.☺️
@@alessandrasilvestri1245 both of her parents had to be treated back around 2011. But her mother's came back after the 1989 tour (2015); and a brain tumor complication was talked about in 2019. Her mom seems to be doing ok, though; she still goes out in public.
"Did the twin flame bruise paint you blue?" is one of my favourite lyrics from her ever. To me, it basically means "did the breakup make you sad?" because both she and Jake Gyllenhall are Sagittariuses so that makes them twin flames, she speaks of "twin fire signs" also in another song on Red, State Of Grace, but as you mentioned it also means like soulmate, so basically the twin flame bruise the break up of those two people and "paint you blue" just like did it make you sad? Or at least that's how I interpreted it. (So no, it's not about John, she had few age gap relationships, even tho Mr. Mayonnaise was probably the worst one which really affected her). And I don't really think that the "half her weight" lyric has anything to do with her ED, it might, but for me, it's just how exhausted she was by the whole thing.
@@adabadoskova2915if you go to battle with the person who is “your other half” (your twin flame/soul mate), and lose them, then you’ve lost half of yourself = returned from battle half your weight.
Idk if you've listened to "the moment i knew" from red, but it elaborates on the line about turning 21. Her boyfriend at the time, jake Gyllenhaal, stood her up at her 21st birthday party. The heartbreaking thing is that she thought he was planning a surprise for her, but he neverv showed and didn't even bother to call her until the party was over. It's a HIGHLY underrated tear-jerker, and really highlights her storytelling abilities
I’m 12 seconds in and David has already fulfilled my needs for some sassy Swiftie edits, AND I get you and your husband both in one video?! 🤩 😂 I think I can pretty confidently predict this video will be yet another one of yours with a score of 13/10 for me.
You are the first reactors I have seen to notice the "Dubble-cross my mind🥰So many miss that. It is Taylor´s version, however it was recorded a year or two ago ,so she has even better technique now, but I agree that she is doing it on purpose to emote emotion.
Loved seeing you guys reacting together to some Taylor content after watching you both separately for months! Can’t wait to see the music video reaction! It really helps give some context if you’re unfamiliar with the situation. This song is about Jake Gyllenhaal. They dated for a few months when she was 20 and he was 29. This is Taylor’s Version (as there was never an original 10 minute version recorded- thus being ‘from the vault’) but I think she is trying to mimic her older style of singing to be closer to the original 5 minute version. As you guessed, the ‘3 months in the grave’ refers to them breaking up and then him finally saying three months later that it was love, but it was too late. The ‘twin flame bruise’ is a reference to the fact they are both Sagittarius’s (a fire sign). It also relates back to another song on Red called State of Grace, where she mentions ‘Twin fire signs’. ‘Brooklyn Broke my skin and bones’ is a play on words using the expression ‘Brooklyn Broke’ which is someone who has lots of money but still dresses like they don’t (particularly for the purpose of looking cool or relatable) which definitely applies to Jake’s style.. I’ve always interpreted it as another way of juxtaposing how casual and cool he was about the whole relationship whilst it literally broke her.
Omg thank you so much for reacting to this, i’ve always wanted to see you react to this song, bc it is one of her most deep and emotional songs, she was so heartbroken
This is about Gyllenhaal; goes along with We Are Never Ever Ever. . . . . ., I Knew You Were Trouble, Red, and the Moment I Knew. But, she has dated several older men; John Mayer, Gyllenhaal, Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston were all older. Taylor Lautner, Conor Kennedy, and Joe Jonas were about her age; Harry Styles and Joe Alwyn are a couple years younger.
@@Azx12345 I'd love it if you point me to an interview. . . . in her aussie Today show Red era interview, it seemed like she said it was the same person who inspired WANEGBT?
As I'm sure plenty of other people have mentioned, this song is about Jake Gyllenhaal. If you want more context for the "turning 21" line, you should check out "The Moment I Knew" from this same album. That song talks about it in a lot more detail.
I think the line about "til we were dead and gone" was about the attempts to get back together - but "We are never ever getting back together" answers that.
I really enjoyed having your husband and his input in this video. It’s the perfect teamwork - you decoding and deciphering the singing technique while he decodes and deciphers the lyrics. It was fun watching him figure out some of the poetry of the song and connect to it.
I love this reaction!! One looks at the vocals and the techniques, and one is looking at the lyrics and the story. It makes everything perfect! Just missing someone looking at the production. 😁
I LOVE your reactions. It makes me sad that no one reacts to the “Sad Girl Autumn Version” of this song. It is my favorite version. Listening to it while typing this actually. ❤
Please do 'I bet you think about me' feat chris stapleton. There are ties to all too well and directed by Blake lively. Its rather fascinating to find the clues that tie together the two songs.
I love both versions of this song however the original version is a bit of tighter story line. It also is sadder and seems more poignant where the 10 min version has more of the frustration and anger. I'm a pretty big believer in the concept that the ending is current and wasn't what she originally wrote. In the film version it's a shift in perspective and is told from current Taylor and I think that's what happens in the song as well. I don't mean that as a criticism I would expect her to polish, change or add stuff to vault songs. I mean isn't that the purpose of production?
My husband also said it’s a waste of electricity, and now I can’t not think that during that line lol Still the best song ever!! This is Taylor’s Version, but she’s still improved even from then, I saw her live in Minneapolis, and she killed it!!
I wonder if this is the version she recorded in the past or if she did it again and was keeping the integrity of her old vocals. I definitely hear what you mean about the pushing on "well".
I just wanna point out how cute you guys are!! The part when Audrey gets so excited to tell about the 'twin flame' then her husband just laughs in a confused manner. Aaahh! So cute!!! ❤️
So I think that the Brooklyn part has to do with the fact that during the time that Taylor and Jake Gyllenhaal dated, they spent a lot of time in Brooklyn (in fact their "famous" paparazzi photo was taken in Brooklyn.) I would assume that something about Brooklyn or Taylor's time spent with Jake in Brooklyn left a painful mark on her and broke her and that's what that line means. The line "I'm a soldier who´s returning half her weight" is similar to the “tolerate it” line that says “gain the weight of you then lose it” as in she’s returning the weight of him and the relationship after the battle of trying to keep it.
15:37 no. The weight Is a way of saying she got absolutely destroyed. The break-up got her feeling so much pain she feels like half herself after the process of gettting over him. She returned alive, but very hurt, drained, devastated, injured. Still, she returned to live, she got over it. That why she says "from when you broke me, i returned". Emphasis in returned. The battle was surviving the break-up.
Heidi, @heidos7 said it all! And thank you, Heidi, for clearing up the meaning of those last lines. Yes, Jake Gyllenhaal was after John. I'm so glad you're going right over to the short film now. (That Taylor directed)
When she was 19 John Meyer pursued her. He was 32. GROSS. She thought it was all a big love story. It for sure wasn't. Dear John and Should've Would've Could've are good songs for stuff about that. After Dear John came out, JOHN MEYER SUED HER!!!! WHATTTTTTT THE FFFFFFFF. And he said it was immature of her to sing about him. Well John, if you want maturity don't date people with 'teen' in their name. After that she dated Jake Gyllenhaal. She was 20 and he was 29. So not as bad but still. No. All Too Well is about him. He was around her family (unlike what how John was). She thought it was serious. But he basically seems to have just literally done an about face in her perception of it. He just sort of said it's over out of nowhere as she sees it. He just pulled a no show on her 21st bday. But he said it was to do with her being young. But then still dates really young women. "Brooklyn Broke" is a term. It's like rich people in brooklyn who dress under the radar. But also the Brooklyn attitude. It broke her.
@audrey if u haven't done it yet u need to check out "the moment i knew" (lyric version) which tells what happened after the b day party that jake didn't show for
Great reason. On my way to your husbands channel to see yalls reaction to the short film. I can't wait to see yalls reaction together. I remember what you said about your current husband and your ex. I'm so glad yall have each other. Beyond cute. ❤❤❤
I read something about the "twin flame bruise paint you blue" line yesterday. Twin flames are soulmates, also Taylor and Jake are both fire signs. The hottest part of a flame is blue, so she's asking him: "Did this love burn you as much as it burned me, soulmate?"
The thing is that the 10 minutes version is from the vault but the short version is old Taylor, but both are from back when she was 21, so maybe that's why she sounds so much like old taylor even if it's a Taylor's version. Also, I love that part where she says All Too Well in a very country, very Dolly Parton way. Totally a call back to her country roots.
“maybe we got lost in translation, maybe i asked for too much or maybe this thing was a masterpiece ‘till you tore it all up. I was there running scared i remember it all too well. And you call me up again just to break me like a promise, so casually cruel in the name of being honest i’m a crumbled up piece of paper lying here ‘cause i remember it all too well” …….. and there is still more, but yeah that’s the bridge and it’s the best bridge ever
It's Jake. Also Jake is We Are Never, Ever Getting Back Together and the one where she really socks it to him is I Bet You Think About Me. In this song, the red scarf represents her innocence (virginity)!
“Brooklyn broke” is referring to rich white people who dress like they can only afford flannel shirts and crappy Henleys and it is exactly how Jake Gyllenhaal dressed.
I’m sure someone else already commented this, but this song is about Jake Gyllenhal. I believe twin flame here is about their star signs. Taylor is really into those. And he didn’t show up to her 21st birthday party.
You can tell it’s TV because of her outfit and hair, this is from red when she had long hair and was 22 so her style was very different, but she just matched her vocals as close as possible. Also if you watch the first time she ever performed this live which was a Grammy’s performance she was almost in tears because it used to be so hard for her to sing, but now it’s become a happy song for her to perform because her fans sing this song back so loudly to her so she can smile through it because she thinks of her fans now. Twin flames = both Sagittarius fire signs. Brooklyn = Jake’s house. He missed her 21st birthday party which is why she made 22. & Never Never Never getting back Together tells you how that relationship ended.
You got it, even tho its taylors’s version, she said in an interview that the song was originally designed with the old notes and she recorded the vocals, how the old notes were
this song is about jake gyllenhaal, who started dating her when she was 20 and he was 29 (ew), and the part about her dad saying "it's supposed to be fun, turning 21..." references gyllenhaal not showing up to her up 21st birthday party. the song 'the moment i knew' from the same album (red) explores this situation in more detail/a more focused way. her work is so inter-textual and self-referential. :)
:) not sure - If you play taylor's arrangement the left had from time to time plays the sound and rhythm of pent up unshed tears - imo she sings in this restrained visceral way to convey the emotion and not be screaming crying and freaking out (as she did when she first wrote it (spontaneously) in practice with her band
I'm both of you when it comes to the line 'we dance around the kitchen in the refrigerator light'. On the one hand it's my favourite version of the chorus in the song, but I always think about it being such a waste of energy when listening to it.
I’m not sure the exact story. But it’s goes something like this: she walked in to either record a song or rehearsal. They could tell something was wrong, she walked into the booth and just let all this out. 1 take (the very first version) her mom asked the producer something on the lines of “I sure hope you recorded that.”
This is all about her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal. She made a mini movie for this song & the video & the imagery add even more to the song. (From her clues, we think he took her innocence). And her dad told her turning 21 was supposed to be fun, instead of watching the door for 'him'. Watch that video.
"twin flame bruise paint you blue" makes me think like they wanted the twin flame relationship but they went so hard that it fell apart and bruised them both, leaving a stain of grief, a blue bruise

I like everything about the 5 minute version more. Editing is good.
Original >>>>>> 10 minute version
I love everyone's reaction to the F the patriarchy line. The way she punctuates it vocally makes a lot of people miss the whole context. "He was tossing me the car keys - F the patriarchy keychain - On the ground"
Ikr?
Very much Jake's style at that time.☺️
@@LK-lz6lk Thanks! I like idioms. 👏🏻👏🏻
I was thinking of the military and vets and her grandfathers. . . being retired Army.😉
I thought the soldier who returns half their weight was someone who left to war with a significant other but came back home single.
I tought only her mom had cancer right?
I interpreted the soldier lyric as she went to battle with her man and when it was over he was gone.
@@sabinajoh yeah, I mean, that makes sense, but why half her weight
@@adabadoskova2915if you go to battle with the person who is “your other half” (your twin flame/soul mate), and lose them, then you’ve lost half of yourself = returned from battle half your weight.
oh my god, that's so smart, I haven't thought about that, that's a very interesting take@@Jessijokes
I love the ATW bridge it gets me everytime, it will NEVER get old
The bridge begins wit maybe we got lost in translation and goes on
Idk if you've listened to "the moment i knew" from red, but it elaborates on the line about turning 21.
My jaw just dropped so hard I can’t believe yall are a couple omg
I’m 12 seconds in and David has already fulfilled my needs for some sassy Swiftie edits, AND I get you and your husband both in one video?!
🤩 😂
I think I can pretty confidently predict this video will be yet another one of yours with a score of 13/10 for me.
Jake and Taylor had a 9 year difference. Same as Sadie and Dylan do in the short video. Taylor doesn’t miss a beat to get the story perfect.
You are the first reactors I have seen to notice the "Dubble-cross my mind🥰So many miss that. It is Taylor´s version, however it was recorded a year or two ago ,so she has even better technique now, but I agree that she is doing it on purpose to emote emotion.
Double
Beveraggi noticed it too! You should check out his reaction, he's great!
Saying she’s a crumpled up piece of paper basically means the damage is already done. You can uncrumple a paper, but it can never be perfect again.
And when you’re crumpling up paper you’re discarding it like trash. You’re finished with it.
His face when she says "I'm a swiftie now." yes girlie❤❤❤
This is about Gyllenhaal; goes along with We Are Never Ever Ever. . . . . ., I Knew You Were Trouble, Red, and the Moment I Knew. But, she has dated several older men; John Mayer, Gyllenhaal, Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston were all older. Taylor Lautner, Conor Kennedy, and Joe Jonas were about her age; Harry Styles and Joe Alwyn are a couple years younger.
I knew you were trouble is definitely about john mayer
Tom was the best out of all the older guys
@@Azx12345 a nice guy; he's talked a bit about the overwhelming attention they got.
@@Azx12345 I'd love it if you point me to an interview. . . . in her aussie Today show Red era interview, it seemed like she said it was the same person who inspired WANEGBT?
we need more of you guys together!!
Oh it’s coming!
Your partner is so quick at understanding the lyrics!! He is lovely
As I'm sure plenty of other people have mentioned, this song is about Jake Gyllenhaal. If you want more context for the "turning 21" line, you should check out "The Moment I Knew" from this same album. That song talks about it in a lot more detail.
OMG you guys need to do the short film! Taylor directed it as well:)
Go to 7 Deadly Bananas. It's available right now. 😁
It’s 10 minute ATW or nothing at all! ❤
It has to be the 10 minute version ❤
This is 100 percent taylors version. There was never a ten min version till recently
I've been watching both of your channels for months and have only just found out that you are a couple. That makes me so happy right now haha
16:05 his question has me cracking up😭
Please do 'I bet you think about me' feat chris stapleton. There are ties to all too well and directed by Blake lively. Its rather fascinating to find the clues that tie together the two songs.
I always used to sing with my hands. The physical motion seemed to help me hit the right pitches, especially at the top of my very limited range.
This song gets me everytime
This is Taylor’s Version, but she’s still improved even from then, I saw her live in Minneapolis, and she killed it!!
you should listen to the sad girl autumn version!!
I've been watching his channel and I did not even know he was your husband!! How cool!
Aaahh! So cute!!! ❤️
is it the 10 minute version, if not you should react to the all to well short film
Omg yes i love the short film and she directed it so well
It says in the video it’s on patreon
Brooklyn broke refers to rich people in Brooklyn who act like they don’t have money and cosplay as broke hipsters
You should react to the eras tour performance she killed it vocally!
We need more of this!!!!
I can’t wait for the music video reaction!!!
Our reaction to the music video is already out at Danny's channel, 7 Deadly Bananas.
@@SongsFromASuitcase I watched it right after! I am hooked now on both your guys channels!!❤️❤️❤️
Ok so this IS Taylor's Version vocals. And the song is about Jake Gyllenhall
Heidi, @heidos7 said it all! And thank you, Heidi, for clearing up the meaning of those last lines. Yes, Jake Gyllenhaal was after John. I'm so glad you're going right over to the short film now. (That Taylor directed)
10:54 “Are we on verse, I feel like we are on verse again” we are in the third paragraph of the bridge actually. It just keeps going.
Living for this!!!
When I put on the red vinyl I still listen to the 5 min version and I wanna scream these other parts and they just aren't there. Lol
I love how you both analyze the lyrics =).
Hahaaha i love the your losing me from audrey’s vault 😂
He's awesome!
“Is this about a specific person?”
Oh boy is it ever… his name is Jake Gyllenhaal and he’s the Voldemort of the Taylor Swift universe.
You guys gotta watch the 10 minute movie, it's absolutely amazing!
The John Mayer sing is titled Dear John. This is Gyllenhal
the song is about jake gyllenhaal
I love you both so much! ❤
*hugs*
I read something about the "twin flame bruise paint you blue" line yesterday. Twin flames are soulmates, also Taylor and Jake are both fire signs. The hottest part of a flame is blue, so she's asking him: "Did this love burn you as much as it burned me, soulmate?"
THE ALL TOO WELL SHORT FILM AUDIO (11 MINUTES) IS SO FUCKING SUPERIOR NOBODY EVER TALKS ABOUT IT 😭😭
Need to do the short film of ATW! ❤
Our reaction to the music video is available right now on Danny's channel, 7 Deadly Bananas.
you have to watch the videoclip of this song
10 min version is everything
Brooklyn Broke is a slang term to define someone who has a lot of money but still dresses and acts like they're broke.
At 11:59 the song “The Moment I Knew” addresses the whole birthday situation and hits just as hard!
I LOVE your reactions! Makes my day ❤
You can tell it’s TV because of her outfit and hair, this is from red when she had long hair and was 22 so her style was very different, but she just matched her vocals as close as possible.
this a Taylor's Version! and its about Jake gyllynhall
this is definitely taylor’s new vocals! she might’ve made the choice to sing it less favorably to better replicate the way she sang it in the original
👍👍
:) not sure - If you play taylor's arrangement the left had from time to time plays the sound and rhythm of pent up unshed tears - imo she sings in this restrained visceral way to convey the emotion and not be screaming crying and freaking out (as she did when she first wrote it (spontaneously) in practice with her band
I'm both of you when it comes to the line 'we dance around the kitchen in the refrigerator light'. On the one hand it's my favourite version of the chorus in the song, but I always think about it being such a waste of energy when listening to it.
After listening to this song, you should listen to The Moment I Knew, it ties into this song a bit
10 minutes version the best version
This is Taylor's Version released tbh for her OG swifties
I’m not sure the exact story. But it’s goes something like this: she walked in to either record a song or rehearsal. They could tell something was wrong, she walked into the booth and just let all this out. 1 take (the very first version) her mom asked the producer something on the lines of “I sure hope you recorded that.”
this is sooooooooo good
This is all about her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal. She made a mini movie for this song & the video & the imagery add even more to the song. (From her clues, we think he took her innocence). And her dad told her turning 21 was supposed to be fun, instead of watching the door for 'him'. Watch that video.
It's available at Danny's channel, 7 Deadly Bananas.
I BET YOU THINK ABOUT ME NEXT PLEASE ❤
I think twin flame also means she's a fire sign and so is he which makes a twin flame.
You would have had a MUCH easier time understanding the story if you had watched the short film, She won a well-deserved award for it.
Our reaction to the short film is available now at Danny's channel, 7 Deadly Bananas
"twin flame bruise paint you blue" makes me think like they wanted the twin flame relationship but they went so hard that it fell apart and bruised them both, leaving a stain of grief, a blue bruise
