- Justin compares the PSR-SX900 and Tyros5 Keyboards. Both setup with the same styles and using One Touch Settings so you can directly compare the same standard settings. This video does NOT compare the capabilities of the instruments in terms of functionality/ features it is designed to give a comparison of exactly the same setting on both from the factory.

This is one of the best head-to-head comparisons I've seen for keyboards... well done! After watching this video I had a much better sense of what these two keyboards were capable of. For my money, the SX900 is a far better value based on the quality of sounds/styles to my ears.

The SX900 sounds very refined along with a more responsive system, indeed. However; hats off to the T5 that has aged elegantly. I would take any of those home 🙂

Great achievement of the T5 to sound more realistic, better to MY ear, than the SX900. Still the second best workstation from Yamaha.

Yeah. But the wood winds isn't updated. (there's no Super Articulation 2) so... the sax and flute sounds like crappy shitty 90's fake sounds unlike the Tyros 5. Why they just can't convert the SA2 woodwinds to just SA so the tone of the sounds is renewed???

@@amusic9825 That's why I'm having a hard time deciding whether to get the SX900 or something else. The drums on the SX900 are much better than on the Tyros 5 and the rest of the SX series, but as you said, the woodwinds aren't as good. I wish they hadn't put the touch screen on the SX900, because I'm blind and I can't really use that. The lack of aftertouch is another drawback of the SX900, but many of the sounds are better than the Tyros 5.
@@amusic9825 I prefer the saxophones on the SX900 because they are the same samples I have in Halion. And 90s PCM sounds are not "crappy and shitty"
as you so eloquently put it. I wanted to buy a Tyros 5 and very nearly did buy one but as I resigned after falling out with my ex boss on the phone I can't afford it!
The woodwinds on the PSR-SX700 and SX900 are still usable, I would say they are on par with my Roland SC-88 Pro which still sounds just as good today
as it did back in 1998 ( it's so hard to believe the SC-88 Pro is that old, 1996 actually! ). 90s PCM still sounds better for playing public domain songs like
Christmas carols or nursery rhymes at a kid's party. Some people even reccomended I go for a PSR-SX700 or SX900 over a Tyros 4 or Tyros 5, listen to Tony
from Bonners playing the Yamaha PSR-SX keyboads and I think you might be surprised at how good they really are ( I was at one point almost sold on an
SX700 and probably could still just about afford one if I still wanted one ).
The Tyros sounds fuller and sounds more realistic. The SX 900 is a good keyboard for its price. Only a Tyros player will feel the difference in feel and articulation overall
T5 keybed with aftertouch is better.... The overall sound from the sx900 is beter.

I bought a 76 key T5 2 years ago - still learning all about it - but deffo sounds ace with the volume up - picks out more of the subtleties I am finding.

One thing I have noticed with Yamaha is that in the newer models, you only get a teaser of an increase in more buttons and features they always bring out more in the next and the next models never all at once. If you get my drift.
I have a PSR S970 at the moment. These reviews are very helpful, but I guess in the end, it always comes back down to ones own personal preference. I hear and see pluses and minuses in both keyboards. I think Yamaha should have continued making the Tyros 5 whilst introducing the Genos to provide better choice.
gingerladyaubern what do you mean? The Genos is the continuation. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, no?
I think whos playing makes a massive difference as well
If you get someone like Glyn Madden or Martin Harris playing say a psr8000 or 9000 they are going to make that instrument sound much better than any home keyboard player that uses a Genos or T5
I'm not a big fan of the latest yamaha keyboards even though I own the Tyros 5 , it just sounds very tinny compared to my older yanaha keyboards . The 8000 is probably my favourite
Can't imagine how far mid-class PSR can sounds so good against the high-end Tyros. Amazing keyboard.
Btw, I still love my Technics KN7000 sounds and capability.

Dulistan Heman Technics is an old model OMB Keyboard but no one can underestimate its performance. It’s a fantastic Keyboard of the past until today...
You're so right. The KN7000 has now achieved something that few keyboards ever do - cult status. And the second hand prices are steadily increasing too. That's partly due to old ones being snapped up for spares. Technics really should bring it back!!
@@dykemiller483 That was was fantastic keyboard too......the first KN I ever had. The 2000 & the 7000 were the best that Technics ever produced. The ones in between not so much.
I used to own a Tyros 3 and the speaker system was excellent. I cannot believe that the SX900 built in speakers would sound better then the Tyros 5 speaker system and subwoofer. It is wonderful to see professionals like Justin play, It does sound amazing, My only gripe, Is the SX 900 plugged into an external PA to give a better sound whilst giving the demo between the keyboard models.
By the way Justin your videos on Yamaha instruments are excellent and educational, With Technology changing all the time I am having trouble keeping up, Must be an age thing. thank you for taking the time to produce the demo.
Dont forget that the T5 have aftertouch , SA2 voices , Ensemble function( its great to use), Larger Sample memory ,sliders and better build overall ( even better than Genos)
Exactly, I do not own neither of both bud i do own a yamaha montage 6 which of course has aftertouch, I've tried de MODX 6 and it's great but not on it's big brother level.

Yeah! And, good news, the T5 doesn't have a touch screen. That means that blind people like me can play it. The bad thing about the T5, though, is that it's missing 19 drum kits the SX900 has.
Sample memory its the same - 1GB.
The Drums at sx 900 sounds more fresh and realistic. But for use at Stage i prefer the biger knobs from T5.
First off I will say that I don't really use auto accmpaniments and tend to do everything via midi sequencing but at the time when I was looking into buying a flagship or midrange
Yamaha arranger the only reason I considered one as a substitute or a fall back was due to concern that Halion 6 might not work if I ever had to take my old computer back to
factory reset or also concern of license transfer and also bad experience after having to get a refund on Halion Symphonic Orchestra but in the end I bought a new computer and
as I had to update my Cubase I also decided to buy Halion 6 again ( I now have Halion 7 ).
Anyway last summer I considered a number of Yamaha arrangers from Tyros 2 which was at first tempting due to the fact they are now a lot cheaper but then I decided on Tyros 3
as my base model as it was the first to feature sliders allowing more real time control over the organ flutes but each newer Tyros is an improvement over the previous Tyros even
though some people may disagree. When a black Tyros 4 was listed on EBay last August I did seriously contemplate buying it but decided not to rush as I knew I could get a Tyros 5
if the Tyros 4 was already sold ( I planned to buy an arranger keyboard for my birthday or nearer the time ). I did also look at the PSR-SX700 and SX900 and I was very impressed with
the quality of the sounds ( especially the drums ) and I'm sure I couldn't have gone wrong with one of the PSR-SX series, another advantage was that the PSR-SX keyboards have built
in speakers making them easier to move. I also looked at the Montage and MODX after somebody challanged me saying that "arranger keyboards are not just for one man mands"
( but they are really designed for one man band situations ). The Montage has some really nice sounds but the saxophones were not it's strong point and I can say the same for the
MODX but I soon went off the idea of buying an MODX. But by October I finally decided I was going to buy the Tyros 5 but sadly I couldn't afford to buy a new keyboard in the end
as I handed in my notice with immediate effect and I have been unemployed ever since and I agree that an arranger keyboard does not really suit my needs and that I should stick
with VST instruments as they tend to sound far more superior with no static noise unlike with hardware.

SX900 sounds amazing.
With the exception of S.Art2 patches, all the presets of Tyros5 are available in the SX900. In addition, the SX900 have several Genos drums and synth patches. I am still waiting for S.Art2 to make their way into the PSR models
Although the SX900 does not have AudioStyles like Tyros5, it does have support for that via optional expansion packs.
I don't own a Tyros but still feels like Tyros has not failed before sx900. It's still on top before sx900, may be Genos can beat it not a psr series keyboard.

I turned the vision off and it was easy to pick when the Tyros 5 was playing Mush richer in sound.
When you consider the price of SX 900, a good condition used Tyros 5 could be around the same price or cheaper.
It is worth considering this before you buy.
There are a lot of Tyros 5 on the used market as many keyboard players have moved on to the Genos.
The only thing I have found with the older Tyros keyboards is that some of the backing accompaniments are quite dated.
For the price, Korg seems to have mastery over modern accompaniments based on what I hear listening to reviews.
This is tough. I'm trying to decide which one to get. The SX900 has way better drums, while the Tyros 5 has aftertouch, art switches and super articulation 2 voices. The PSR-SX900 doesn't have any of those, but there is a joystick, which I like better than the Tyros 5's wheels. The other thing I don't like about the SX900 is that it has a touch screen. Since I am blind, I can't use it. I know it is possible to get to the different voices without the touch screen, but the fact they included it is not good to me.
The Genos have voice assist for people with bad or no vieuw , and the T5 hasnt that . I see a lot of game movies on youre YT site ? and youre blind ? ( just curious)
@@Soryt Yes, I am blind, and I post moly gaming videos. I do plan to post music on there at some point in the near future.
Perhaps they should have added a version of the SX900 with optional lcd screen, and SX600 controls, but I guess it comes all down to how many they would sell. I feel the Tyron 5 just sounds a bit "older", as in less modern. Also more often harsher and less organic. In some manner it feels a bit like my old house organs. The SX series really caught me by surprise. Really "next gen", even now in 2022. Getting a SX700 delivered tomorrow in fact. Got most of the important functions from the SX900 at a much lower cost. Really looking forward to playing with my family, as I never find time to use my home studio with loads of different instruments any more. What did you end up with?

Yamaha always does this: first it launches a very expensive top keyboard for a few and after some time it releases versions of the same product with a few items less. The sx900 is the same as a mini genos, the system is the same and many voices are the same, changing only the number of keys, more controls and buttons.
Can you please tell me the name of the songs you played in order of how you played them.
Thanks for the comparison, it really helps in making a decision. Currently in the USA, the SX-900 is about $2000 (new) compared to $3000 + for a T-5 (used).

All sounds are from the OTS of the factory styles so we have adjusted nothing to show exactly how the customer gets it.
May its a "placebo effect" but i felt the sound more intense in T5.

I have played Yamaha for 25 years, from the Portatone 100 to the Tyros 5. In the end they all sound the same, they simply take the same styles and refine them over and over, but the general feel does not change. And even the Genos, does not really offer anything dramatically new or better, as a matter of fact I tried one at the store and looks cheaper made than the tyros 5. Then, (big surprise) I heard that Korg is full of Yamaha components in side. I had just ordered a SX900, but I sent it back after only 1 hour. The touch-screen it's nice but it is a huge step backwards from the tyros, especially because of the no after-touch. . So this time around I decided to go a different route. i bought a Ketron SD9. It sounds very promising on youtube, let's hope for the best.
Hello hi Seth 👍🤪 I’m an oldie ! So have tried practically most out there etc , Yamaha took over from technics yonks ago & bought their whole systems ? Then on to this day is still technics = the Best ever . I still have a / Technics Kn 65000 / 18 years old witch proves this , most on Yamaha is still 80% tec ✅. Not being presumptuous- I possess 8 keyboards all makes etc , all Best to you & family 🍷🌈

i swear Yamaha just changes the master EQ & stereo field for every new release to make it sound more present, because most of the samples are regurgitated.
Would you please compare sound of Yamaha PSR SX900 with Yamaha MODX? There are not many people who own both of them and that’s why there is not video that compares sound of Yamaha’s arranger keyboard with MODX or Montage. Thanks in advance!
Hi i have both. And my opinion the yamaha modx is slightly better in comparison to sounds i can tell the difference between both.
But both are awesome boards. I love them both..
Roggyo....the MODX has TWO sound engines. The PSR/Tyros/Genos do not have the advanced 8 Operator FM engine. The MODX/Montage also includes indepth granular sound design capabilities. Two examples: 1. Bosendorper Piano Samples for the PSR/Tyros/Genos are limited verses the MODX/Montage samples. 2. Rhodes samples (Chick Corea) samples.
Aftertouch (Sound modulation dynamics): MODX and SX keybeds do not support Aftertouch, while T4/T5/Genos and Montage all have better keybeds with aftertouch. Invest in a used Montage61 for the dual sound engines and better keybed with AF and later add the SX. Best of both worlds.

I considered the Modx but went for the SX as it offered a wider spectrum of capability / playability and a much more intuitive setup. The SX is very close to the Genos for a great price. If you dont need the chord looper, vocoder just get the SX700 as you can download more styles and voices specific to your genre of music. The Modx sounds / effects are great but more complex to setup. The Modx is also super light, i think the 6 is half the weight of the SX. "Horses for courses"...
PSR has horrible sounding piano sounds unlike the MODX.
I could go into loads of detail but the T5 wins for me over the SX - and the Genos! Of course, as an 'old' model, the Tyros is easily the best value for money too. In the final analysis, as Kenny would have siad, it's all down to personal taste - and your wallet!!
I have had the T3 T4 T5 and was lucky that my Yamaha dealer allowed me to home trial the Genos for a week. and it was not long enough to go through all the functions the sounds are outstanding if the SX-900 is anything like its big brother I know what I'm asking from Santa this 2020 Christmas plus the subwoofer.

An excellent comparison but did not convince me to change from My T5. The technology of the SX may be more advanced but the sounds as far as I am concerned are not that better than the T5 especially the saxophone which sounds very cheap compared to the T5. Also the SX900 has no after-touch and only 60 keys. However, if I was to change then I would go for the Genos which at the moment is for me not worth double the price of the SX900. I will wait a year or so and purchase a good second-hand one. On the other hand the SX900 is worth the price, especially with the free future upgrades.

O. K... this is a nice comparison! The 2013 released flagship Tyros5 VS the mid class leader of 2019 SX 900....very close, can't say which is better!I like more the drumkits of SX900...also I like the 76 keyboard of Tyros5... Both are grate! If you ask, finally I would buy SX900...

I have a Tyros 5 and was asked to home trial the Genos which was lovely to be asked after a few hrs I kept going back to the Tyros the touch screen was handy on the Genos but I do suppose it does go down to personal preference so I feel if this new Keyboard is a mini Genos I shall stick to my Tyros after all I have spent hundreds of ponds on extra voices and styles Just my opinion.
Hi Andy. I have a Tyros 4 and had the same thinking when it came to the T5. Even today the T4 has everything I need. I do like the Ensemble capability of the T5. I think the SX supports Ensemble mode correct? Would like to hear the SX using the T4/T5 subwoofer attached. I like that the T2/T3/T4/T5s have immediate button access to all the registration Banks for easy patch selection verses the SX and Genos. No need to abandon what you have for the "new" stuff.

Hola, no es que sea un efecto del teclado, es por la cámara. Las cámaras captan los cambios de luz por la frecuencia en la que se encienden y se apagan los leds, pero nuestros ojos no lo pueden percibir.

I’d have found it more useful to review the different functional areas where the two keyboards are not the same - I know the SX900 has stuff like the Chord Looper, arpeggiator, two live programmable knobs that I would really like (I have a Tyros 4), but I would miss the aftertouch on the Tyros. Any other areas where they differ functionally - and in particular what would I lose (apart from aftertouch) if I traded in?
The fact that Tyros (all) require additional speakers and PSR SX900 have very good onboard speakers is a HUGE difference for me.

Some people they don’t want to accept Tyros5 was amazing keyboard,but now is it a bit old(2013) I have sx 900 and to be honest it’s Really amazing for the middle range! Tyros 5 it’s very close,but touchscreen,big memory,chord looper,NEW DRUMS ,new style, bluetooth,joystick and many more features so this is the difference! Tyros5=iPhone8plus Psr sx900=iPhone 11

I don't know about iPhones, but the T5 is like driving a 10 year old Mercedes S-Class, while the SX900 is like a new maxed out C-Class. It's bound to have newer assistance functions etc. But hey, I'd prefer the S-Class.

Well both keyboards have their pros and cons. Between last summer and last October I looked into almost all the Tyros keyboards from 2-5, I was very tempted

I own a T3, love its sound , playability, the articulation buttons. But it's a bit bulky to bring to gig. A friend has an SX900 , want to trade with my T3. SX900 is more portable, but its speakers are no match for the T3 speakers.
However, in any gig, my keyboard is plugged in to a sound system. So the built in speakers act as monitor for the player to hear if he/she can't hear from the sound system well enough. I do let new bees to play my T3 and my previous S770 (and the SX900 if I get it by exchanging instruments with that friend).
For fancy features, voices, my Genos makes me happy. I do not let new bee touching my Genos.

Is it my imagination, or is the sound of the Tyros more rich and sounds more like the actual real instruments, is there a difference in the way the sounds are sampled or reproduced in the 2 models.
? I have a sx900, like it, but it looks like the keys on the Tyros are true piano size. Is this true? That is the only thing i do not like about the sx900.
You guys using low shelf filter on the master or what? Why the sound of both keyboards sound so bright with no low mids?

But these demos do sound light on the base which is a bit surprising

I have a Tyros 3 and wouldn’t buy a SX900 to replace it. I have an old P60 that gives me 88 fully weighted keys and an MX49 which gives me arpeggios and so much more. I would only upgrade my Tyros to get Ensemble and a few other features so it’s either a Tyros 5 or Genos for me. Currently, I’m happy with what I have 😁

In my humble opinion, SX900 sounds better because of its drum kits, they sound very better, more realistic. In T5 they have the same problem of some PSR which some drum parts in high frequencies sound together and seem to be higher than the ideal. It doesn't happen in sx900. Of course, I don't mean that T6 isn't good but if I would take one, it would Be sx900

I own a Tyros 4 and although the SX900 is as good as, I think the T5 is just in front. but at the end of the day the cost between the two is big
My opinion is better buy second hand Genos when Yamaha launch Genos 2 because now is Tyros 5 second hand the same price as SX900

I am reconsidering buying an arranger keyboard in the not too distant future. I will most likely end up with either a Yamaha PSR-SX700
or SX900 as they are a bit cheaper than a Tyros 5 and also maybe having the speakers built in might be more practical. The PSR-SX700
and SX900 even have a few selected sounds from Genos and also better drums than Tyros 5 although Tyros 5 has audio styles.
SX700 has the same sounds as S970. SX900 has some sounds from Genos
Don't get SX700, it is not even close to the T5.
If you want something closer to T5 , get SX900
My first query is, why compare a new generation PSR, the SX900, with a Tyros which is, what, around 3 years old? Surely a comparison with a Genos, particularly with a new Genos model in the wings, would have been more informative. That said, it was interesting to hear this although it didn't explore some of the new capabilities of the SX900 (possibly levelling the playing field a bit as it didn't use the Tyros after-touch, for example). The SX900 is a marginal but clear winner here, and when price is introduced, it is now, more than ever, hard to justify the cost of the Tyros/Genos product line (unless money is no real object). So thank you for an interesting demo (and nice to hear you tip your hat to Jeremy!)
Hello together. I still own a Tyros 5. Before I had a Tyros 1, Tyros 4 and PSR S970. There was a huge difference between T1 and T4. PSR S970 was also very good in spite of added packs, Entertainer and REVO-Drums. Now on the Tyros 5 I also have added packs like REVO-Drums from GENOS and some other packs individual constructed by YEM. For example: STAGE DRUM SETS and Drum-Sets from other manufaturers. And it sounds great. To me the worst thing is, that some technical details you can do and arrange on the T5 are not written down in the manuals. So I picked up further informations from several users from UA-cam. The learning and know how of the T5 hasn't stop 'til now. Now to my conclusion. The SX900 is a very good instrument and offers some more, technical news that everyone has to decide, if he needs it or not. To me the new DAC in the SX900 has a little bit higher resoltution than the T5. SX900 sounds more diferrentiated than the T5 but more digital. But if everyone finds a good and own attitude of the built-in Master-EQ in connection with the Master-Compressor, you will recognize that the T5 can also offer an extraordinary sound. Further on I tried different PA-Mixers and PA-Sets. Now I play with an Allen Heath Mixer ZED 10FX and a Yamaha Stagepas 400. To me and the audiences up to about 120 people it sounds clear and great. Maybe that others users prefer other equipment. It's subjective to everyone what he prefers. So, if you need a Chord-Looper or assignable knobs take the SX900. The look on stage if you play is much more professional with a Tyros 5. Tyros 5 was made in Japan and the newer series are made in China. Some of my collegues changed back from a GENOS to a Tyros 5. Worst thing this Keyboards with a touch screen is the non moveable Screen and the problem of incidental sun oder roomlight. You see nothing if you don't use a sun-/light-protection. A separate monitor is helpful but if you can't recognize details on the touchscreen, it's useless. So I keep my Tyros 5 and still will have a look if the next generation can solve this problem.

It was a very good comparison however, with the SX-900 you seem to have to work harder at the keys to get a touch response unlike the tyros 5 you seem to have less effort there. I use currently tyros 3 and I love it but after a while of driving the same car, you want something different. Now I tried the Genos and didn't like it because you have to work every little aspect of the keyboard to bring about the rich sounds. This is not something I like I love plug-and-play with a bit of tweaking. Reading a manual that is too large for learning new things I might reach 90 before I finish the manual. As I have always used Yamaha and bought Yamaha since I was a teen and having Played digital organs the touch & the sensitivity has never left my habits. So I usually like to adjust the Sensitivity internally to the Soft 2 and then things work in my favor. The Live mega voices never could get the hang of those because they seem to require a different kind of pressure or none at all or somewhere in the middle of the top-to-bottom pressure point of the key. Who plays touching a key mid-way. It really doesn't help to get mega voices on some notes and not on others. It's like you missed something or made a mistake. What am I doing wrong? I hope they have cleared this up in this model. I also know that in April there will be a Genos 2 after the first Genos and I am also wondering will there be a PSR- SX-900 #2 as well what will be different? Thanks for the demo it was greatly appreciated. Even though I am 3 years late but that is the way I work always 3 years after the fact. Have you heard the New Ketron EVENT it is totally amazing better than Korg Pa5X and better than Yamaha Genos. Sorry to say but my ears don't lie. Too bad Yamaha had more than just 2 pedal options on the back why not 3 plus volume. There are times when 3 pedals help you save time when it is all set up for advances and endings and breaks etc.

if you compare the look of both keyboards, the older Tyros looks like a modern keyboard, and the SX900 looks like any old 90's keyboard if you take the color screen away. The 900 is a very capable machine, it's just a shame it looks cheap, which it certainly isn't. I prefer the 900 sounds and accompaniments, but to me the looks are just off-putting.

Yes, the SX900 has been very popular and have had many people change their Tyros5 for one as well, to have the speakers in and also more compact in size. It all depends on your circumstances, both are great products with their own benefits.

After weeks of kicking the tires, I was all set to buy a Tyros 5 "demo" or maybe a Genos and went in to finally decide. They happened to have the PSR SX900 arrive and opened it up for me to see and hear. Not to take anything away from the Tyros or Genos or even the Pa4X (I know, right), but they don't have +$3000 or more over the SX900 - and the +$500 I spent over the Pa1000 was well worth it (although I did have to buy the $95 sub for the Yamaha to match the bigger sound of the Pa1000). The mid-range boards are really getting to be enough for all but the most demanding (which I thought I was!)

When you compare price for what you get, the SX is by far best. Price difference is you can get 2 SX for the price of 1 Tyros. With 2 SX’s you have one for home and another for traveling, by a hard case and still be lower price than 1 Tyros. Price difference is you get one SX and in 3 years get the newer Yamaha and still be lower priced than just 1 Tyros.....bottom line is that these instruments are about 50% over priced to begin with. Come on...plastic, Black plastic. At least make a wood grain plastic in various wood look alike styles. Plastic is plastic.
The keys a very plastic. I have several Yamaha keyboards. Tyros first generation. Psr s 970.......Yamaha could really raise the bar on the competition with both looks and price. Sound quality can always be changed with amplified on any of the instruments. Bigger bass sound etc

I agree. The bad things about the SX900 are the touch screen (I can't use it since I'm blind) and the lack of super articulation 2 voices.
The 900 is louder the Tyros is more refined .
May its a "placebo effect" but i felt the bass more intense in T5.

Maybe it's just me. But the PSR-SX900 seems to have a little more life/clarity and realistic sounds.
Recently bought a korg pa1000 , couldn't play it for more than few days , decided to return it and keep my tyros 4 . Yamaha sounds amazing ...
