As i started getting into Vintage Lenses in 2019 i really had a hard time finding informative AND enjoyable youtubevideos about it. I can say you and your Gf are very relaxing to listen to - also you totally point out the infos i am searching for! Flares and Character is what i am searching for in order to get an advantage over all these instagramers having the same look over and over again - thats why i keep searching for unique lenses and your videos are helping while doing so. Keep up the good work! Really curious with which lenses u come up with next! Greetings from italy
If you’re a fan of that check out the Pentax K 55 f/1.8. Can be had cheaply and has a beautifully characteristic bokeh, some CA but sharp even wide open. 👍👍
Actually very surprised you don't have more subs dude. Keep posting. You guys are both really likable and I'm picky with people lol. Great info and I can really learn a lot from hearing you. Ggs man! Ty! Subbed.
8:56 Sorry but NO. FL was the earlier version of FF SLR, NOT range finder, and was overlapped at one point and subsequently replaced by FD, in the pre-AF, EOS era. Canon rangefinder lenses are *LMT* not FL.
I bought my first canon slr QTB with a 50mm 1.4 lens for 7-8$ in a flea market in Paris in 1983. It was working till I shifted to the digital mirrorless. The fl lenses use the same mount as the later FDn & FDn lenses but their character and construction is different. Something special about the bokeh - 3d & if one wants more contrast just bring down the highlights a little. The lenses are more solid, beautiful construction & focus & aperture dials work beautifully. The aperture dials are usually in front of the lenses which I prefer vis a vis the later fdn lenses which have more contrast. The 35/2.5 & 135/2.5 primes I think you would appreciate too. I love both the takumar & jupiter9 lenses - there is a glow - special rendering & personally I find it very limiting to work only with wide open apertures. Depending on the composition of the frame and the textures of the blurs that one wants - the DOF - distance from subject is what should be the criteria for the chosen aperture. Meanwhile thanks for showing your journeys with these lenses
I really appreciate these videos sir! I shoot with a sony a7ii and last year I came across a Konica Hexanon AR 135mm F3.5 for 6.99 at a good will in Irving (In the original case and everything!!!) it took me awhile to get comfortable with the lens after I bought the adapter for it. But now....I take crazy doap photos with it!!!! Started searching for more vintage lens and I came across your vids. Plus you're in Ft. Worth! Nice!
FL is not a rangefinder lens. It's the second SLR mount developed by Canon, after the Canomatic R SLR mount and before the FD SLR mountt, which was an improvement of the FL, for this reason the FD adapters are good also for FL lenses, with identical film-flange distance of 42mm and the mechanics of the mount being mostly the same The rangefinder lenses have much smaller film-flange distances, not having a mirror between the shutter and the lens (For Canon is 28.8mm same as LTM L39 but with a different 39mm thread).
I like to use a 50mm f1.8 by Canon and 45mm Minolta f2, however shooting pics of kids is hard since when they are open, it's super hard to get tack sharp eyes.
Eric McFarland so it all depends on the mount for the lens. I just google the adapter based on the ebay lens. Here’s an example Pentax Super Takumar: m42-e mount Jupiter 9: m39-e mount Canon 55: fd-e mount
Thanks for your test. An acquaintance of mine recommended the SLR Magic, but in the previous video of yours I was seeing that it is too flare. So, I think if I went for one of these lenses I would go for the Canon.
Hey man I got onto you because of WhoisMatt shout out! Now I've been binge watching your channel 😂 . Great intresting content mate! Regards from Australia!
Really cool video! I’m definitely going to be picking up some vintage lenses to play around with when I get my a7iii! I know that autofocus obviously doesn’t work with these lenses but with the camera still show things like focus peaking and zebras when you are shooting with vintage lenses?
Yes! It definitely does! I would highly recommend an external monitor if you shoot video though. It’s sometimes difficult to gauge focus on the small LCD
people get wet dreams for all new lenses in mirrorless cameras, to me the best part about mirrorless is not having to use first party lenses and instead buying vintage
But it’s interesting that the zeiss 55 1.8 you used to shoot the video has the 3d pop or swirly bokeh especially when the background are trees and leaves. A modern autofocus lens with a vintage look.
you guys are amazing theres a lot of knock about not using sony native lenses so this is great encouragement I am about to order the pentax 135 f 3,4 I heard a lot of really good about them did you have to use mount converters?
I have a converto tamrom 1:2.8 135mm its a screw on lens. Im having a hard time finding out exactly what adapter I need for my sony a73. any suggestions
I liked your videos. im really concerned about the issue of the a7iii with the shutter. I dont know if you can tell us something about it. How to avoid it or if we need to extend the warranty of our a7iii
@@AustinBlackvideo That one will be good for a low light photos. I own only one vintage lens (Helios 44-2 58/2). Yet I havent had a chance take some good photo with it. :D No model, no photo.:D So I took a photo of some flower only. lol
@tim deridder . Just pick a brand. Canon, Nikon, ....... I myself use Olympus OM lenses on a Sony A7(S). For more info about old lenses, see: www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/
i suggest you to put the lens name on title, cause this is what people look for, a review and result at the same time not just talking blah blah blah about lens build but didnt show any great image come out from the lens subscribed
Ouuuuu do not focus on the sun like that in video :D you will make a hole in the sensor. If it is not in focus you will get the flare but without heating up the sensor that much.

So glad you’ve enjoyed the channel! Hopefully I can get my hands on some more vintage glass!
I have the Jupiter 9 and the Pentax... Love both of them...
That Pentax bokeh is stunning. Nice job! Really enjoyed this video
Loved it! One of my favorites. I think i prefer it to the canon fd 50 1.4
If you’re a fan of that check out the Pentax K 55 f/1.8. Can be had cheaply and has a beautifully characteristic bokeh, some CA but sharp even wide open. 👍👍
I have that lens. It has the "character " of a Canon lens..very beautiful and inexpensive
Do you know what adapter is used?

Thanks so much! We are definitely going to keep going in 2020. Hoping to get some Contax Zeiss stuff as well as the Canon FD 85 1.2 next year.
Just picked up a Sony adapter for my dad's old Minolta 50mm 1.7 and about 20 filters. Should be interesting.
That's awesome! Your getting started down that rabbit hole lol

Which adapter did you use

i wish you put link to part 2 and 1....its so hard to see them in your video list
What adaptors do you need?
I like to use a 50mm f1.8 by Canon and 45mm Minolta f2, however shooting pics of kids is hard since when they are open, it's super hard to get tack sharp eyes.
Awesome video, Austin. Well worth the wait. I personally preferred the Super Tak over the other two.
Kenny Ritchie interesting to hear since it’s the cheapest! I really enjoyed using it for sure
Nice group of radio active lenses. Jupiter 9 isn't although later version could be.
Nikon Ais lens are a gem for Sony A7iii. The 85 1.4 ais , the 28mm f2.8 ais and many more. The 105 2.5 Nikon Ais.....
serviola3 I would really like to try that 85!
Beautiful work!! What adapters do you recommend for these lovely lenses? Kind regards from Sweden
I would like to know that as well
Which adapter are you using to adapt these lenses? Thanks for introducing me to these lenses.
Eric McFarland so it all depends on the mount for the lens. I just google the adapter based on the ebay lens. Here’s an example
Pentax Super Takumar: m42-e mount
Jupiter 9: m39-e mount
Canon 55: fd-e mount
What adapter are you using for the lenses?
If you like the FL 55 1.2 you must try the Minolta Rokkor 58 1.2 ;)
Simeon Kolev would be awesome to test!
Thanks for your test. An acquaintance of mine recommended the SLR Magic, but in the previous video of yours I was seeing that it is too flare. So, I think if I went for one of these lenses I would go for the Canon.
That’s awesome! Yeah, I had a couple SLR Magic primes, and they were so so. I much prefer having a library of a bunch of vintage glass
Can you please test the Vivatar 28 mm 2.5? Thanks for this video, super cool
They should have put a lens hood on the vintage pieces, as done with the Sigma.
Hey man I got onto you because of WhoisMatt shout out! Now I've been binge watching your channel 😂 . Great intresting content mate!
Regards from Australia!
Whoa! Thanks so much! Crazy to hear someone saying they have “binge watched” content from my channel!
I have Takumar 50mm1.4 is buttery smooth.but I have Jupiter 37A
Great review. The Canon FL was not a rangefinder lens though (8:55), SLR.
g bee hmmm! Gotcha. So it’s just one of the break lock versions? What’s the difference between the FL and FD mount?
@@AustinBlackvideo Far as I know they are identical except the later FD mount allows wide open aperture metering.
Subscribed. Glad I found this channel. I will Definitely share this channel with my friends.
What about a series on best M42 lenses or best in a range, say around 28mm around 50mm
That could be interesting! I was thinking of doing a photo challenge with Kristin for the next vintage lens video
How you can used with out adapter!?
When you purchased, the Jupiter9 85/2.0, which adapter did you use, because everything I'm seeing requires a Leica..or are there others?
Can you specify what adapters you use to use the vintage lenses, please?

Wait where's part 2 and 1?
do you recommend novoflex adapters made in germany?
What are some lenses I can buy for my Sony A7R Mark I? That being Vintage, Sony, or Canon. With a Budget $300 Dollars and under.
You can get loads of different nice glass for that budget if you go for vintage. I love my old nikkor 50 1.2 and 85 1.8. Great stuff.
What lens you use for record that video
What is the right mount for the Canon 55 1.2 If I Want To Buy It And Mount It To A Sony A7
Late reply, but you use a normal fd mount adapter.
I liked your videos. im really concerned about the issue of the a7iii with the shutter. I dont know if you can tell us something about it. How to avoid it or if we need to extend the warranty of our a7iii
It's certainly a little scary. I have not experienced it yet. Knock on wood
Great video! Out of curiosity, what action camera is attached?
It was my old Osmo action!
Austin Black thanks!
great video man!
Nico DehnhaRdt thanks so much!!
Could you please givd me links to parts 1 and 2?
Very nice review. Might buy some of those in future. Very nice bokeh! Thanks :)
Nice! I'm really wanting to try the 85 1.2 FD next

Great video and interesting content! Keep them coming!
very cool video, thank you guys 🙏
Really enjoy!
Hi, what vintage wide angle prime lens would you recommend for a sony a7 III?
@tim deridder . Just pick a brand. Canon, Nikon, ....... I myself use Olympus OM lenses on a Sony A7(S). For more info about old lenses, see: www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/
great vid but the lack of stabilization makes me a little sick
Canon FL mount is SLR not RF mount.
Great review, thank you!
Dee Yammy thanks!!
What extra adaptor do I need for that canon 55 f1.2?
Marlon Orellana you’ll need a Canon FD to Sony E mount adapter (some call it NEX)
Thank you for video!
Zlatana Lecrivain glad you enjoyed it!
great vid! thanks
If anyone found which is The Best vintage lens, please let me know too!
Cant find part 1 & 2??? Help!
They are there! You just have to go back like a year in my videos LOL 😂
i suggest you to put the lens name on title, cause this is what people look for, a review and result at the same time
not just talking blah blah blah about lens build but didnt show any great image come out from the lens

i recognize that song
Ouuuuu do not focus on the sun like that in video :D you will make a hole in the sensor. If it is not in focus you will get the flare but without heating up the sensor that much.
This is how all reviews should be, great job my friend :)
which one would you recommend between the Pentax 50/1.4 & Canon FL 55/1.2?
I prefer the Canon just for the 1.2 creamy-ness. It also feels larger, more robust, and more rare
Hey Austin, great stuff man. I was wondering how you are shooting video at f2 in daylight, since i can’t really see an ND on it. Cheers
Crancked shutter tf up
Thanks 📍📍🔳
cool channel : )
Lol when like she like started like talking.
Get a GH5, or a gimbal, or a glidecam to avoid having Parkinsonian footage :P
Astral'o Pithecus his stuff is fine, leave the gimbals to amateur UA-cam filmmakers
