- Following a heavy overhaul at Locomotive Maintenance Services of Loughborough, the Didcot Railway Centre welcomed back the Alexandra Dock Railway 0-4-0 Saddle Tank No. 1340 'Trojan' in the Spring of 2021. The loco was launched back into service over the Bank Holiday Weekend in April and May, after an absence of 10 years!
Carrying GWR livery, 'Trojan' is now officially the oldest Great Western locomotive in current operation, being outshopped by the Avonside Engine Company of Bristol in 1897!
The loco was in operation on Wednesday 26th May, during one of the Centre's scheduled steam days. The 0-4-0 would haul shuttles along the main demonstration line during the day, heading the resident GWR vintage set of coaches.
This comprehensive video showcases the action during the day. We begin with a few detailed shots of 1340 standing outside the engine shed, along with a closer glimpse of the other locomotives on display. This includes the New-Build GWR Saint No. 2999 'Lady of Legend', which has recently returned to Oxfordshire, following its highly coveted visit to the Severn Valley Railway during April and May.
This is followed by 'Trojan' moving off shed to collect the vintage coaches, in readiness to handle the shuttles along the 'Main' demonstration line, which runs the whole length of the Great Western Society's base. The shuttles are captured from several different angles and locations, which includes a handful of brief encounters with mainline trains that use the Didcot avoiding line, heading to and from Oxford.
All scenes were captured on Wednesday 26th May 2021.
1340 'Trojan' is set to be in operation over the 29th - 31st May, running alongside GWR New-Build Saint No. 2999 'Lady of Legend' and GWR Large Prairie No. 4144 during the Centre's 'Bank Holiday Steam Up'. For more information, visit their website here: didcotrailwayc...

It's nice to see Percy still in steam
In the thumbnail it looks exactly like a OO gauge model. One of the cutest engines ever. I bet it gets called Percy a lot
Certainly a lovely little engine, and nice to see it back in steam! Thanks for commenting.
@Doctor Whos it's just a theory that percy is based on trojan because awdry never stated what percy is
But let's be honest: you enclose that cab and put a bunker on the back it's Percy ;-)
Has to be one of the most eager little engines I have seen. Gorgeous little thing!
Certainly a beautiful engine! Thanks for commenting Richard.
I cry myself to sleep knowing the e2 class tank engine and Trojan will reunite together
Love 0-4-0's. So cute, yet so powerful.
It's a lovely engine! Thanks for commenting.
We all know *EXACTLY* why 90% of the people are here, myself included, to see the green caterpillar with red stripes!
It's amazing to know that the Green Caterpillar with red stripes, also known as Dirty Percy is still on steam
where the red stripes though 🤔
Looks amazing! Would be nice to see 1338 in steam as well with all of its unusual exterior linkages. Great footage👍
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video! 1338 is currently on display at Didcot, but it's nice to see 1340 back in steam.
No way that's a engine it's just a green caterpillar with red stripes on 4 wheels
(Insert Percy the small engine theme here)
2:18 (Insert Duck the GW Engine theme here)
It’s a bit sad seeing all of those beautiful GWR engines static in the shed, probably never going to be in steam again..
It's Percy the green engine!
In 2:17 you can see Duck and Percy
Hello Percy!
2:16 I see a green caterpillar with red stripes and a Duck
guys stop saying it's percy
it's Trojan
Percy, where and when were you built?
