Nice to hear that restaurant is reestablishing itself. So many great eateries died due to Covid, especially in California. Good on you for making a voyage to support them.

yo Mazzy Maz -- really great to see Paul's Boutique get some love. I still remember popping my PB cassette in for the first time and being blown away how great it was, definitely a hip hop high-water mark. Delfina memory: I was dining there with my then-girlfriend and we were seated across from several guys from Faith No More. As my entree was served I recall being tempted to sing 'well it's dirty job but someone's gotta do it' but I restrained myself. Anyway, always a nice vibe in there back then.

I wish I never parted ways with all the vinyl I had at one time, which was 3000 of them. The album that I recently listened to was Little Feat ‘Waiting for Columbus’, I miss it so much. I have UA-cam music and they have it on there, not the same as it was on vinyl, but either way good. Love your channel, my friend from work has several albums, several thousands and you remind me of him, a good thing.
    Thank you

Fiona, I’m a regretful late comer to her, was introduced by the excellent documentary narrated by Jakob Dylan “Echo in the Canyon “ ….and the vinyl from the documentary, which is not a great pressing but decent enough, covers of the Byrds an the others by Beck, Fiona and Jakob are a treasure…thanks for the Fiona lead, looking forward to build around her soon….

Every wear and tear on Mazzy LP sleeves has a tale behind it...Mazzy, were you there at Golden Gate park for the Jerry Garcia wake concert in the nineties? They read eulogy from Bill Graham, Mick Jagger,.. remember Steve Perry was on stage...the music was too windy..

    It's nostalgia. So,
"Those who condemn nostalgia as weak, maudlin, sentimental, and enjoin us to 'live in present' have a case, no doubt; yet they are also condemning us to superficial consciousness. We all have our reckonings and assignations with the past...the ache to return home is part of growing up and stays with us to the end. There is more to nostalgia than meets the dewy eye. Examined, it becomes a kind of philosophy, a mysticism, a presentness." [Paul Driver, MANCHESTER PIECES]

Man, it's nice to see Spirit getting some love. Love that band. Saw them many times, but usually with only Randy and Ed were the only original band members. Fantastic live band.

Todd Rundgren, wunderkind - he’s covered Strawberry Fields Forever AND Rain, engineered and mixed The Band’s Stage Fright, went trad & avantgarde all at once with the Harry Smith Project, toured with Ringo’s All-Starr Band and topped the charts with more than one stone classic of his own. Thanks for the reminder Mazzy. Look forward to #8.

I always say that I think that there are two Todd Rundgren’s; there’s the Mainstream Todd, who writes catchy pop/rock and ballads, and then there’s..Progressive Todd, the guy who’s done some really “out there “ music. With the exception of his A Capella album, I like Mainstream Todd

You’ve reminded me how good the Hollies were, forming in 1962 then a string of hit singles in the U.K. and still performing of sorts to this day. Certainly an achievement. I’am sure Massy they are worthy of your attention and an appraisal on a vlog about them! Also I’am sure your aware of Jethro Tull’s song We Used to Know being similar to the Eagles Hotel California, there’s even a mash up on You Tube! Always loved We Used to Know when it was on a sampler ‘Nice Enough to Eat’ in 1969, fantastic song 🎧. Look forward to your friends You Tube channel!

I have to agree with your statement that Crosby, Stills and Nash never topped those first solo albums, although I really like their other solo efforts and Stills came close in 1972 with the first Manassas album. I really got into Crosby, Stills and Nash after getting the movie Woodstock on VHS for my 20th birthday in 1999. Over the course of the summer and fall of 1999 and into the winter of 2000, I went out and bought everything Crosby, Stills and Nash I could find.

i love todd rundgren....that album 'runt:the ballad of todd rundgren' was a favorite of mine when it came out (not to be confused with his other album just called 'runt')....but i played it over ;wizard' or 'something anything'. or any of his albums...there was just something about it....i also loved his album 'deface the music', a beatles homage which was brilliant....another great episode my friend...peace...rocky

Love that you showed that Beasties record! At the time it was considered a commercial flop - I remember thinking they had “lost it” at the time, but many years removed I think the pendulum has swung more towards giving it the respect it deserves. PB truly took them for a 180 turn in their career at that point - in sound, business relationships (leaving Rubin like you mentioned), life outlooks, and even moved from NYC to LA to cement their foundational shift.
Would be intrigued by a video of your fave/top 5/whatever hip hop/rap records in your collection at some point. Cheers Mazzy 🍺

Hi Mazzy, I am a huge Todd Rundgren fan ! I named my second son Todd ! His lyrics, and music are so meaningful to me especially on the album "Something/Anything". I own the Graham Nash album too, I like it a lot, but tire of his (and the other members of CSN&Y) political songs, I guess they have a lot of material to work with...even now. I saw Sparks in the 70's, loved them ! They have the greatest album covers ! I bought a white satin scarf with Sparks picture on it at that concert...wish I still had it ! I like this series, but miss your "Memories of a Vinyl Junkie". Will you be doing anymore of these ? Happiness, Cindy

Paul's Boutique predates the lawsuit that mandated licensing for samples, so at that point the Beasties (along with everyone else) were sampling with abandon without having to worry about getting the rights to anything. I had gotten mostly out of hip hop by 1989 in favor of acid house/new beat/EBM/the beginnings of techno. At the time I thought the sample based hip hop was too soft compared to the Linn/DMX drum machine hip hop it replaced. So I missed a lot of those records, but it's hard to argue against the creativity they show creating music out of hundreds of bits and pieces.
IMO the version to get is the double vinyl release that was done in 1998 which gives the tracks a bit more breathing room.

My first introduction to Spirit was "7 Dreams..." which was a beach house staple back in the day. I have that and a couple of compilations on vinyl, not their first . Need to get that one. I don't know how Spirit lost that suit. The Led didn't win too many. Probably because it was only part of the song.
Todd Rundgren is from Upper Darby which you can get to on the Frankford El. Yeah I'm from Philly. Been to the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby for many memorable concerts.

todd rungren (in my opinion) had a good a run of records as anyone from runt through todd. 5 great great albums. and ballad of is the sleeper of the bunch! i always felt that crosby stills and nash( as a group and as solo artists) all picked a bit early. they were not primarily songwriters ( that is where i think they were hoping neil young would help them). dig you channel , got to hung on on sites stressing music i don't really dig ( heavy metal , prog , fusion) as a sort of i can't believe people really like the crap. i spent a bit of time in san francisco throughout the 90's and early 2000's as we kind of used SF as our west coast base when on tour. and we recorded our last album in san francisco.

If I could make a suggestion, an interesting late period Todd album to check out is A Cappella, which he released in 1985. The catch with this one is that every song is the result of his multi-tracked voice and programmed vocal samples. Kinda weird, but it’s definitely worth a listen.

All the members of Crosby Stills and Nash produced some great albums early on. I agree their first are their best with the exception of side one of Manassas. Randy California had no interest in suing Led Zeppelin but as he passed away his family filed the lawsuit. I don't get how Spirit lost considering George Harrison lost for the song My Sweet Lord. Fiona Apple is as wordy as Dylan. That Beastie Boys album came out before you got permission to sample songs. It is most likely the reason that permission became required.

From what I know about her I really like her as a person. For one thing, she’s into pit bulls and I recently learned she adopted her most recent pup from the same group my fiancée and I fostered for and adopted a couple ourselves. She’s no wanker!
For some reason I haven’t been able to get into her music but I’m going to stream that album a bit and see if I can understand the appeal to her work.
