Luton Town have completed a fairy-tale return to the top-flight of English football after beating Coventry City on penalties in the Championship play-off final
Luton Town completed one of the most remarkable rises in English football history on Saturday, beating Coventry City on penalties in the Championship play-off final to secure a place in the Premier League next season.
The game got off to a worrying start for Luton as talisman defender Tom Lockyer had to be stretchered off after collapsing with nobody near him. Fortunately, the club later announced that he was conscious and had been taken to hospital for assessment.
Jordan Clark broke the deadlock for Luton after 23 minutes with a powerful finish at the near post as the Hatters totally dominated proceedings in the first half.
However, Coventry roared back after halftime and found the equalizer its improved play deserved thanks to Gustavo Hamer’s unerring finish into the bottom corner.
With the scores level after 90 minutes, the match went to extra time as the tension from both ends of a sold out Wembley Stadium became palpable.
As both teams visibly tired during a grueling period of extra time, chances became few and far between and there became a growing sense that this final would be decided on penalties.

I think there will be some reduction of atmosphere, but not much... Gary has had the architects come to Luton matches and then talked to them about how they need to capture that atomosphere...
and it's one if the reasons the stadium is not designed to be bigger than 18000 capacity to begin with (with easy adding of 7000 more seats if we reach the Premier...).
In Sir Gary we have a fan who has shared the dream of a new stadium that has the best of modern visibility, access and facilities...whilst still having the sound of the crowd focused on the very close pitch...
I am so looking forward to this becoming a reality.

@@Team-be1md the delays have been for two reasons. The main one is how Covid utterly changed the retail landscape and forced the Newlands park changes. the other was the more predictable bite back over the river Lea and other issues re Power Court that should all be dealt with by the tome of the detailed submission due very shortly...
from the month after approval of that we can expect spades in the ground... but it could easily be a longer build than most stadiums because of the toxic ground residuals and the river course changes.
Gutted u's are moving there is no other ground like kenilworth
Fantastic video thanks (Luton fan) this is almost 70 years in the making a capacity of 23,000 not to small, not to big but a massive increase on the limited 10,070 capacity of Kenilworth Road
@@robinlarge1630 Problem with that as they tried everything from 25 ,000 to 50,000 capacity at the previous dozen stadium attempts since the 1950's onwards is that the higher the capacity the lower the chance of approval in fact this stadium will have an opening capacity of 17,500 limited seats until the club iron out any transport issues which could rise up. The physical capacity on opening will have 5,000+ seats out of bounds but ready to go so would jump up to 23,000 at no extra cost just a signature on a legal document. Then in the future if successful it could be raised further easily could go to 30,000 the record attendance for Luton was 30,069 so probably would aim to be higher than that to beat it some day.
@@robinlarge1630 My dad went in these days he told me that he reckons there was bigger crowds than this against Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers said fans were on the edge of pitch and sitting on the top of the Bobbers stand possibly could of been 35,000 unofficially said it was common for clubs to downplay the crowd size, lot of fiddling on the gates 😆

@@andyrob3259 This is not the official one, this is a mock up visual by the youtube channel it is a lot more advanced than this the site has a lot of planning already passed on this. Just some tweaks to the stadium design itself need to pass now and then it will be spades into the ground this year

Looks good if and when it happens, I remember the Kohlerdome plans back in the day and nothing ever came of it. I was born in Luton and left over 20 years ago now and moved to the US but have great memories of Kenilworth Rd..even the cold dark night matches playing in the Simod cup were a laugh..best of luck hatters.

“Power to the People” of Luton! But what’s with the blue iron/steel rails running across the top of the stadium? Makes for ugly shadows across the pitch on match days from the sun (when we get any!)

Congrats building this before August comes.
Those plans need to be revised now you’re in the PL. It’s too small, like Brentford and they have regrets now. You can use next season as a bounce to increase the clubs size and get back to the PL again, but you need minimum 25,000.

Thanks. Presumably your a Hatters fan. Been to sixty six football grounds. My favourites were the ramshackle grounds. Old Wolves ground. While under modernisation the pitch was miles away from the main stand. Old Anfield was good. LFC bought every terraced house on an adjacent street to expand. Two old ladies refused to move. Offered big money. Even to rebuild their house elsewhere. They left in the end. Obviously Everton Fans.

Why is it that as soon as you build a new stadium your team struggles. North Enders used to call Blackpool Bloomfield road Doomfield Road or Bombsite Road. When we were relegated they hired a plane with insulting banner flowing behind. We did the same when they went down.

It is already happening via demolition and waiting for the power station to be relocated the river underneath will have to be diverted to the edge next to the church and then contamination removed before the 6 levels of stadium and everything else get built. It should be physically starting to be built in the next 6 months to 1 year

From the original plans on the website, I don’t think so. They could easily pop two on the goal end roofs like the Jumbotrons at the old WHL, and it won’t spoil the original aesthetic. And Old Trafford doesn’t have a huge jumbo screen
I believe a screen will be inside was told the 2 smaller stands behind each goal will be expandable upwards and potentially corners could be filled in if ever needed
