The more I listen to reviewers the more I realized that as objective as they want to be they have they own preferences about construction and sound to mention a few. And audio clips are worthless I dont waste my time with them. Im the ultimate judge of sound because nobody has my ears and brain. The cosmetics of it all plays a role on how much I enjoy music. Reviewers are mostly quite entertaining in a good way. Its like a open window into somebody's psychology. Thank you. And with that I keep coming back.
You are correct. Few reviewers I trust to give me a solid evaluation of gear. My preferences may not be theirs but they can describe the sound to let me know if it may be my jam or not. And like you said it’s up to my ears to make that choice. And my room plays a big part in that as well. So sound clips are basically entertainment not a way to t gear.

Yes. Use reviewers as 1 of multiple sources of information and insights. Also why when people ask me I split between what I look for, what I like, and how it differs from what most people seem to look for, etc, and always ask them to try themselves.
I like to hear how they feel the speakers compare to other popular speakers on the market. You can say they sound really good, but unless you say "they are $2k better than the R3 Meta, it doesn't really help much.
I thought that the leading edge transients were muted compared to the reference track despite your announcement of a 15k peak. I hear them as just a bit dull overall. I didn't hear "more life" in the speakers. I heard more life in the reference tracks.
Agree upper mids are softer than source. Also bass was less extended. But good sound overall. Yamaha has exceptional music equipment and digital keyboards (which I own and use). But I am not impressed with their speakers so far. Not with Andrew Jones speaker designs in the ring, at lower prices no less... Thanks for another great review 😊.
I'm sure the speakers are good. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who won't bawk at the price. But two "master crafted" wooden boxes with 4 moving parts between them costing as much as one of their upright acoustic pianos or one of their motorcycles.
Ron! Great review and sound clip, as usual. I have severe tinnitus but can still hear the variations in the sound and after your explanation. Great way to check my hearing. All above 11k is muted for me. Please Ron. When doing the sound test. Showed them also into a corner a play the same tracks. This is how many customers use them. Interesting to hear the difference compared to your LOTS.
Ron, Speaker Placement is key (as you very well know). I assume what you hear as a gimmicky effect may come from this. Move these close (er) to the wall and i am sure left and right channel Sounds will be presented in a more believable way.
To my ears Ron, the speakers seems to round off, maybe it is soften most of the music. It actually sounds "dull" to me. Not what I'm used too (Arendal 1723 Monitirs). Just my take.
you can Review the most recent release of the Quad Revela 1 and compare it against the above pair of Yamaha which is a little too expensive. Good review BTW but some parts the comments are over the top.
Hi Ron, what is the equipment used for the sound clips, amp source. is very close to the reference track, you hear that space (which is really great) contributes to this. But I think because of the little coloring it can become a bit boring over time. Grtz Phil

These are stupendously expensive in Australia and there are plenty of worthy competitors at that price point. Its really hard to understand if Yamaha actually intend to sell them or are just making them to demonstrate capability. I like Yamaha btw, I have a pair of Piano Craft speakers attached to a Yamaha system, but I would find it difficult to part with the money asked for the NS-800A.
At the price of these Yamahas in Australia, you can buy Australian made Osborn Titan stand-mount speakers which will eat these little Yamahas for breakfast! No comparison whatsoever!
Yamaha does affordability and hells bells how much, there seems a hole in the middle where speakers are concerned.. But I'm a Yamaha fan, old and new .
More (but still not enough) manufacturers are realizing that brass is for convenience and are poor conductors (for example 60% compared to copper) for sound reproduction and the microthin coating of gold is still not going to change that very much. I hope one day anything brass will be out of my signal chain.
Good renditi of general pop/rock sound. Overdrive. Peak of treble responsabile overemphasize labial clicks and pops of voices. Highs too lifted compared with upper midrange, creating innatural sound, which can result fatiguing in the long run. Natural decay of acoustic sounds are somehow "interrupted". As a result: not worth the money...for sure. Better results would have been achieved with phase alignment of the tweeter, better internal bracing and damping, elimination of internal strange acoustic trap/resonator, better implementation of the crossover in order to shave off 15k peak. Missed chance.
Understandably less deep bass than the reference. Your waterfall plot is positively biased by the unnatural 15KHz peak & not truly representative of the design. Other than that these speakers sound great, as they should at the asking price!
I want Alnico magnet$ with that Spruce, and Xylon! for 5Grand. Manufacturers are bloviating way too hard in marketing, and not demonstrating real-world peak transient composure they claim all these so-called new materials allegedly provide!
And especially at those darn trade expos, they look at me like I’m crazy for suggesting they bring electronic crossovers, and wall-off those amps to 70Hz, so we the public can view real world 85 watt peak transient performance worthy of $12k ! Much less $5k!
Yamaha’s are getting overpriced. Something is off. Their CD-S303 innards with its switch mode power supply and some ALI type chip does not justify the exhorbitant retail price.
