- display shelf for model trains
how hard can it be. Yes not the best display case, but it works for what I want it for.
simple design, as long as it is squared up, I think it will do.
I take 1X3 finished pine, stain it to the color I wanted, Cut to length, pre drill the holes and use number 6 screws. spacers ensure I have the same space between each shelf.
the back I just measure the back of the display case. add some marks and use a small brad nailer to fasten.
some picture frame hooks and wire.
Done
How hard can it be anyway.
Nicely done. You did a great job. Staining the wood was a good move. Thank you for sharing.
Amy taught you well. Great job on these and you saved yourself a bunch of money. You can always make plexiglass covers for them.
Great shelfs sparky and for steam locos white back wall and dark cover for diesels. Take care -Kevin
Ok now you just made me add another thing on my massive projects list. The white background looks best with the steamers, the black looks best with the conrail units. Those look great! - Jason
Pretty easy. Using the spacers for each shelf made it go together lickity split
Very nice sparky. I like the white better for being able to see details.
As most are saying, go with the white. Amy should be proud of you. You did a great job
Those display cases turned out really good! I think the white background makes the locomotives stand out more. Thanks for sharing! ~Pedro
Fantastic job 👍👍👍
I agree Sparky - a light gray.
Looks good Sparky, staining tip: rub stain on with a cloth.
Looks great Sparky
Nice job on the shelves , the white background helps everything stand out nicer .
Great idea, I preferred the black over the white.
Those shelves look great!! I like the black background, but hey it's your project! Thanks for the video
Great job! They came out great! I saw a NYC Niagra! Take care!
Lighter color allows you to see the objects on the shelves better
light yellow but white will do shows off the goods great
Nice job Sparky. And you saved a bunch of money for trains
Looks pretty easy to me...that being said measure a bunch cut once. This is a future project.
Looks great Sparky. I kinda like the black background. Add LED strips in the shelvings and they would look really cool.
Well done Sparky, your certainly a jack of all trades. I think use the white back, it’ll make the locomotives and cars show up better.
Thanks for sharing, Cary
nice work Sparky!
Hi ya Sparky, great tutorial. If it was me I would go with the white backing. I think it shows the locos and rolling stock better. Thanks. See ya.
Great job man.. ill give it a shot.
Dang buddy. Those are really sharp man
I’m gonna break tradition...go with beige...all the locos will stand out
I am glad you didn’t say yellow. Like one other person did. Or green.
actually i like this display. i have one that i had years ago and when i finally got around to it i took it appart sanded it stained and put clear coat on it . I think it was for matchbox cars but i made it my display shelf and i dont know where it came from or where my mom got it . Yard sale i think, anyway i mounted some old brass track which is very old and worn but i put thumb tacks in it and made it so i can put trains on it easy . and they sit not on flanges its small enough to fit 2 of my pacifics 1 consolidation and 1 0-4-0 with cabooses behind the pacific and 2-8-0. i did this back in summer when it was wicked hot
looks good sparky keep up the good work
Nice shelves Sparky! Amy needs to hide her tools better.
Nice job. I would have sanded everything and put it together before staining. I would go with a lighter background like a light oak or pine stain or grey paint. I was thinking of making one of those myself...how hard can it be!
Awesome job sparky go with the white that way you can see everything
If you have the space and mindset, it is always cheaper to do it yourself. Mind you the glass, or even poly carbonate sheet, to make the front cover (if you desire it) will be more expensive than the wood.
See how much dust gets on there. I like the easy access so I can run them
looks great ..i would go with the white backing...now you can make one for me ...LOL...
Great job....Jerry will be proud....lol....but really they look awesome...prefer the black...
Maybe try a light grey, it makes the engines pop without looking to bright against the wood.
I.vote.white.for.the.display.case.contrast.is.the.key.
Great job! see not so hard. I would use a rag or old sock to put stain on. just me but more even coverage and don't waste a good brush. But great job sparky and saved a ton of money.
Nice job! Go with the white back, you can see the locos better.
Great build. I like the black better. Thanks for sharing. Dave
Nice looking shelves sparky! Want to come down here and make me some for bigger choo choos? Lol
Good job. The white background is better.
The white backdrop looks a lot better, 😊
Well hell I should have paid you to build me some! BLACK 🖤
Very easy man. Looks great and way cheaper..
Just next time stane the wood after its built.
That case you linked on Amazon is only about $70 here in the US.
White is better
Am I the only person that was waiting for Amy to come in and ask Sparky what he was doing?
Maybe a sky or robin's egg blue background instead of the white or off-white matte. A tan or biege would also show off the models well. There is nothing wrong with the design or construction with the way you did it. I probably would have taken a slight more time with the corners so the top and bottom pieces would be flush with the sides; but that is just me(I am kind of persnickity that way).
Shelves turned out great, the white highlights the logos, but what about staining the back same as your shelf, wonder what that would look like
White looks good sparky but how about mini backdrops for each shelf. Themed ones ie, fueling/engine yard for logos, grain elevator for hoppers and maybe Toyota for your auto racks.
Do you know a artist?
Sorry went up before ready - continuing- with his lift up track bed at his shed just a thought.
Cheers Robert.
Suggestion for next time.. cut and make the item first then stain it ... that will make it much easier and less wastage of material and time, as you are only staining the finished product not all of your off cuts... and usually a stain is put on then the excess is wiped off with a cloth or sponge. It does look good tho and much cheaper in the long run. I prefer the white background as it shows the trains better as the black background is too dark.
thanks
Experiment a bit Sparky, some light colored cars or locos would probably look better against a black background, darker ones against a light background. Try the swifts reefers I gave you against the black and against the white, see how it looks, you might want some of each.
White back I says...
I can tell you how hard it can be, being a cabinet carpenter. You make me cry but I guess it works.
Side question, the laminate strips on my cupboard doors are starting to peel off on the edges. What glue can I use to stick them back on ?
@@KingTrump2024 You can use contact cement.
@@ScottDowneywoundedbear thanks, 5 year old cabinets so I can only assume it was cheap product for the builder to install
@@KingTrump2024 Builders don't usually use the best products when it comes to finishes. Cheaper the better for them but not the home owner.
So for the cost of one one on Amazon i assume you made the three?
I made four total. And going to say under 50$ each. Without the front cover mind you
Hey Sparky, I think something between the stark white (it hurts my eyes) and the black = Light Grey is a good choice.
I think the white is a good color
sparky i thought you were going to build a bark room
laughing at the problem you have with it lol
yeap he has a hard time finding the burnout light bulbs
sparky you done it now you have not bought the paint let and already spill it lol
Hi Sparky, not hard at all lol. I've got a cream coloured background on my train display case and a green colour on my Eddie Stobart trucks display case. The trucks are generally a lighter colour so need a darker background but as most of my trains that I have on display are darker I've gone with the lighter colour. Just my thoughts atb Andy
THANK You!!
after you strainyour redwood you draw the paint brush with steady presure from one end to the other
Hi Sparky,
A super job and the money you saved can be put to a better purpose namely a new loco or rolling stock have you thought of puttin clear doors on it to keep the dust out Perspex can be used I would think with an ali (illuminam) frame you can screw into the Perspex as Allan of Dragons Junction MK 2 did
Nice job Sparky! White background looks better on video but how does it look in person?
Great job sparky they turned out awesome the colors in the background what would you think about the colors of your Canadian flag just a thought if not I like the white it shows more until your next video stay safe and have a good day
They look good. White background?
Darker colors to white
lighter colors to black
Nice Video Sparky, did Amy find out you used her saw? I think for you a white back ground works because you have many dark engines. Lighter train cars go to the black. Great job.
Your wife has a compound miter saw? I want to meet her! So, How hard, can it be? The white is definitely better for "steamers" and other dark locos but I wonder how dust and such will take its toll over time as compared to black. Black would work for bright and lighter colors. Perhaps 2 of one and 1 of the other depending on your mix of locos. My only minor suggestion would be to see if Amy has a router for the front outer edges. :)
She has more wood working tools than most wood shops.
Yes she does have a router. And many bits
@@sparky107107 Can she give my wife lessons? :)
A different color, yellow? Green? I like the black too but hard to see the steam engine! Maybe add strips of LED lights above the locos?
Sparky, you could buy a piece of plexiglass the size of the shelf unit, predrill holes for hinges, attach! Maybe add a strip of rubber around the perimeter of the shelf unit for a tighter seal to keep dust out? Door edge sealant, rubber. Something else, add aluminum style contact paper to the back to act as a mirror to see that backside of your locos. If you cut a groove(router) in the bottom of the shelf above the loco, then place the LED strip lights in that groove(to hide them), then set the LED strip lights to randomly switch colors. Or choose 1 color all of the time.
White it shows off your trains better
Very nice, did you use 1x4? Personally I like the dark background.
I used 1x3
great layout hope you like mine diesel dave
Ebay has it for half the price, pretty sure same company.
Stop block works better for consistent lengths, WHITE
I am not sure what you mean
