What's the purpose of reading the resistance in Ohms for the pickups? Does it help tell you how much power they put out or is there more to it than that?
Gibson switched to those back covers because of people complaining about static electricity noises when rubbing them. They fix issues people complain about and then people complain about the remedies, wanting Gibson to go back to the original, then complain again when it does the same thing they originally complained about. It’s a never ending circle: volutes, robot tuners, PCB boards, quick connections, brass nuts/zero fret, fret nibs.. you can go on forever.
The Trogly's Guitar Show Im sure you heard about this, I should’ve been more detailed in my response. The problem was the back covers were becoming conductive via static electricity. So when you came into contact with the cover, an audible popping and crackling noise was produced from the guitar while plugged into an amplifier. This was a the “big thing” to complain about for awhile and some people thought they changed the formula of the plastic as older guitars didn’t do this. This was way before the whole bankruptcy/debt thing happened.
Boston Mike actually that back plate doesn’t solve the problem at all. Maybe helps just a little. This is a deal.breaker for me . I already have a les Paul I never play because of this issue. Ive completely rewired and shielded and grounded everything to no avail. I can pickup a hundred dollar sg copy used that doesn’t have this problem. So why does a guitar that cost thousands of have this problem. This is probably one of the major reasons sales are down and the company went bankrupt.

I got mine from a guy in my town. He had it for about 2 months and just wasn't a fan. I bought it off him for $800 case and all. the plastic was still on the pickguard, with original factory strings. It's my favorite guitar i own. The fretboard is so dark it almost looks like Ebony. Gibson really did something right with these
Just picked one of these up off Reverb also in Pelham Blue. Very impressed by the quality for the price point on these. I agree; inspiring is the right word for this guitar. I don't want to put it down. The P90's really scream through a crunchy amp too. Boat loads of extra harmonic content that you just don't get with a humbucker. It's awesome!
I have been curious about p-90's. I always wrote them off on my head as a "vintage" thing, like single coils, that lack balls and muscle for hard rock and metal players. Boy, was I wrong. When I heard the demo of Old Glory, the Epiphone JJN model I was extremely excited and impressed by the dirty snarl produced by the Seymore Duncan dog ear. I am interested in P- 90's now.
The Gibson SG is the most beautiful looking and sounding guitar. I’ve been playing an Epiphone G400 for the past year, and I decided to finally get a proper Gibson. Tomorrow I’ll be getting a 2017 Gibson SG Special T, and next I would love to get one of these and mod it up.

I am not surprised by the review. I’ve got a 2016 sg special with mini humbuckers, and that’s been my main axe ever since I’ve bought it in late 2016. It makes you want to play!
For so many years guitar players from all over the world kept complaining about the poor quality of Gibson guitars. Their new line of guitars for 2019 makes a lot of sense to me. The Memphis series were very good already and the acoustics are great too. But now, imho, they're back completely. This is good stuff! And off course these beauties are expensive. Gibsons have always been expensive. Sure, everything used to be cheaper back in the days. Inflation. You can buy a fine guitar for a lot less, but you won't get an American product for that. Be glad that Gibson doesn't pay his employees $3.00 an hour. Personally, I'd kill for an SG in faded Pelham Blue with P90's.
I finally decided on the Ebony finish, which they didn't have at the time of this video. I've watched this video many times and it was between the Pelham Blue and the Ebony once they added it. Watched this video many times since it debuted. I've added a wide bevel vintage style pickguard, a Dimarzio Super Distortion that is designed to fit in a P-90 notch, an amber switch tip, locking vintage style tuners and a bad ass fine tune bridge and finally a wide bevel truss rod cover. Looks and sounds amazing.
I just spoke to Gibson to find out about the hand wiring situation with the 2019 Special. They informed me that the yearly designation will no longer happen and that the SG’s are coming out now with hand wired pots and the orange caps. Would love to see a review on one of these.
That is what I noticed as well, hand-wired and orange caps. Also, the control plate on some of them is the regular smooth surface type, protected with clear plastic foil like on the pickguard.
I just bought a slightly used (almost Mint) 2019 SG Special in Sparkling Burgundy. I had an original '61 SG/LP with the Sidwinder Tremelo back in 1969. My new Special blows the old one out of the Water. It is so Light, Sleek & Sexy. The Burgundy Sparkle is truly Intoxicating. Best Action/Neck/Tone I've ever had on any Guitar I've ever owned - actually brought me to Tears it is So Good. Pure Gibson Vibe/Sound thru & thru. This one really is a "Special", Friends - P-90s & All. I didn't pay the "New" price, but being that this Guitar is so Good, I would pay it if I hadn't found a used Specimen for less (which I did).
That Pelham blue will look pretty cool when it gets old and worn. I think everyone would really appreciate a tune-o-matic bridge on all models though. My 2013 sgj came with one luckily
Great review Trogly! I just picked one of these up last month brand new and I love it! At $1,500 it's not a cheap guitar but I've been wanting one for a while actually a long time. I remember seeing a Heritage cherry Standard model that had P90 pickups in it over 20 years ago and always regretted not trying it out. Fast forward to 2020. I saw one of these at the local Guitar Center store and just wanted to look at it. Of course the salesman said I can hook you up with an amp if you want. Man that was the kiss of death! After playing it for nearly a half an hour I was hooked! Needless to say I did not leave the store empty-handed nor did I regret it. I couldn't believe how good those p-90 pickups sound! It's a nice stablemate to my 1994 SG Standard in Heritage cherry. If you're thinking about one try it out you just might like it! :-)
simplicity is one of the keys to beauty, and this guitar demonstrastes that. single piece wrap around bridge, p90s, no unnecessary logos or lettering on the headstock, i would add classic tunners to it.
I know you mean the "snot green" plastic tulips , but these were the type used on the original 60's SG Junior & Special & I believe, back in the 60's would have also been manufactured by Kluson. 👍
The keys/Tuners are even better than the original Kluson's, because they are smoother tuning with the larger Ratio (16:1 ?). Also, adding the bigger "Tulip" ones may result in "SG Neck- Dip" ("Heavier at the Headstock" syndrome). Trust me - you LOVE the lightness & simplicity of these stock, smaller Tuners.
Love the color and looks. I can never get a real feel from these videos about the sound coming into my home system. Thanks for the FogHat Slow Ride lick I had totally forgot about that song. Nice Job!
My SG Classic was $1000 back in 2001 and came in a gig back, so I guess $1499 with case is not absurd. I prefer this pickguard, the wraparound bridge and of course the Pelham blue finish. Looks like a winner to me
@@jefflitchfield4950 If you look at ESP built SGs even the cheaper Edwards models the neck joint is so tight and beautiful made.Perfect wood construction. The Japanese know how to do it !
Aquarter inch? and the big finish chip is standard too. I dont care if if it gets covered by the guard for 1400 it should have flawless finish. That will grow.
ive got a 1974 sg special with the raised pick gaurd and the gibson logo embossed on the p90s..a proper players guitar.the neck profile and action is awesome
You're right, and I paid $1800 for a limited edition in aged cherry with vibrola, just like a '64 - circuit board... When I wrote to Gibson, I got quite a curt email back... Having said that, it's a great guitar.
@@VeroniqueMystique Hi V. Just got mine opened up and I see no orange caps - and not hand wired. Also case does not fit guitar properly. Still, it sounds great through my old Digitech TwinTube. Pondering changing my Humbuckers on my '73 Gibson Les Paul Custom to Gibson P90's. (There's an explanation as to why below your comment)
I've just bought a 2019 one of these based on this review. Got to be honest I'm really happy with it, great sound and NO PCB!!! It must have been a really early idea that they scrapped and went back to good old wire thank god. Well I'm three years after this first aired but thanks anyway for the great work you do Austin 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
The new Gibson 2019 are very good. I got a Les Paul Junior, it is a great build. The main thing I have noticed on the 1950's and 1960 still have that top pick guard mount divot problem. Its been an issue for many years, they need to fix it. I do love the new SGs'
I just got an Epiphone SG in Pelham blue with P90's and I gotta say, I'm glad I bought it and not the Gibson, the bridge for starters is the correct distance from the pick up that the 60's special was, the colour is much nicer than the Gibson, the pickups sound the same. Pots roll volume and tone beautifully. I'll take the Indian Laurel, poly finish and Epiphone brand name anyway over the $2,000 AUD difference.
This is a beautiful instrument, thanks for the great dissection. Love that faded Pelham Blue. I have a 2018 SG Special (the kind with mini humbuckers) and am considering mid-term replacing one of the mini h's (which sound great btw) with a P90... Likely in the neck.
What is the difference in the nomenclature and the model number designation of your SG Special with the Mini Humbuckers so I can try to find one like it ? Is it called a SG Deluxe ? I have a 1998 SG Deluxe with three Mini Humbuckers, and a 1971 Les Paul Deluxe with Mini Humbuckers. I also bought a new 2015 Les Paul Deluxe Gold Top with Mini Humbuckers. I do love my 2010 SG Classic with the P-90 pickups too though.
I love it , and would love it more if it was white like Townshend's from back in the day . If I could afford one , I would grab one immediately , despite the dispicable un-vintage PCB ! The Pelham blue looks real nice tbh . Here in the UK ,we'll probably get stung with a £1499 price tag or something ridiculous like that.
thesame body but mini-humbucker version of these is the 2016 sg special T, They have a separate bridge and tailpiece, comes in satin faded finishes, and are also convertible to p90 pickups. Not to mention I believe they are cheaper.
@@jjjamesonnn If you look at the prices of Gibsons from the last five years they've increased dramatically. It seems to have happened just after 2015 when whom ever it was in management that made the utterly foolish decision to install those horrible robo tuners on all Gibson models. In addition to a slew of other idiotic mistakes including that horrible Les Paul logo on the headstocks of their Les Pauls. Rumor has it, Gibson took a real bath in sales that year and I was told by one of the GC stores in my area that they told Gibson not to send anymore 2015 models. So it appears as though Gibson has been trying to get back what they lost in 2015 with these incredible price hikes since then. I've noticed it, even if no one else has.
@@macaholic100 I've noticed the price hike, but consider how much money this model is over the LP Jr. Doublecut they just put out. For an extra pickup and a rarer finish, the upcharge is 700... Even by Gibson standards, it doesn't make too much sense.
macaholic100. When the recession hit, they made a foolish decision to raise their prices $200 on les pauls.Epic fail...Thats why you see young bands sporting midrange fenders.Dont screw over your base.
The guitar is this video is from before the Original Collection - it just looks similar. It's still the 'Henry spec'. Your SG is the newer, current Original Collection model. The transition happened midway through the 2019 year for some reason.
You've missed out the lovely early to mid 70's ones with mini humbuckers harmonica bridges and rectangular fret board markers. I had a 73 one which was ace!
Think Frank had Dimarzios humbuckers in his SG by the time of the Roxy recordings. He was trying to boost the instruments biting mid range. It worked, his solos sure cut through the mix.
John M Dweezil has a recent video of him giving a lesson while using his dad's sg .I believe the neck pickup is a Sustainiac and bro the clean tone on it is absolutely stunning.
What is the blemish thing on the pickguard below the bridge pickup? You didn't address it, so I assume it's supposed to be there... or is it a removable protective sheet like you find on plexiglass that is starting to peel off? It looks awful.
Nice one bro, sounds great! I never owned an SG and my wife and I were talking about getting one, between the 2 of us we have just about every other body shape by Gibson, Fender but no SG! Maybe one of these will be it! Thank you for the review bud
Facebook, their market place, type in "gibson sg" and scroll through the selections, I bought an "08" faded for $500. I took it to a music shop and was impressed and pleased to hear the luthier say, "thats one damn nice guitar". Reasearch the selections, and save yourself some money
I don't know why, but the wrap-around bridge always makes me cringe a bit. I have heard that Gibson wrap-around bridges are perfectly fine, but I can't help but visualizing nightmare scenarios about intonation. I feel more comfortable with a separate bridge (with saddles) and a stop tail peace. I am of a mind that two-in-one designs never do as well as having separate designs for each function.
What a professional presentation! I've got 3 Gibbys in different wishlists now. This Pelham Blue SG you showed off so well is definitely swinging the pendulum in its favor. I just discovered you, and liked and subscribed. Thank you very much!
Nice looking. I am skeptical of the wrap-around bridge, how do you maintain intonation? I got a Derek Trucks model, and had to have it refretted, because the frets did not span the full width of the fret board, which led to frequent slipping off on the high and low E strings. Now I look for "Fret over Binding".
That riff at 10:30 is sick, I especially love the vibrato on the 3rd fret, and when he plays it in the middle position it reminds me of Robert Palmer's 'Addicted to love'
Just got a 2022 SG Special in Vintage Cherry. The neck is set in the body jacked. The tail piece on the bass side is screwed a down all the way for the Low E to sit 5/64 at the 12th fret. The high e side is all the way up to get it to sit 4/64 at 12th fret. Poor QC @ Gibson. So disappointed. Its going back. Not sure if I should try another.
It's lovely, really. But 1499 is kinda stupid for this. Wraparound, single coils, silk screened logo. Meh. Its a student model, c'mon Levis. Lol. 799, you got a deal tho.
I don't think so when you consider a fender at this price point - it's a knock out! Why spend 1500 hundred on Fender USA - when most of the times nowadays the Mexi's at 600 to 900 are about the same. Epiphone is a bad alternative - IMO of course
If you want humbuckers and stop tail they make that guitar too for the same price. ( www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/2019/USA/SG-Standard-2019.aspx ) This has P90's because they have their own unique sound that people find desirable and the wrap around was what they used on the vintage guitar. And $799 for a USA made guitar of this type? They don't exist. Never mind an iconic design that will hold its value over time. Finally, how about the things you didn't mention while trying to knock the value of the guitar. Bound rosewood FB, set neck with what appears to be a holly veneer headstock. Separate volume and tone for each pickup with toggle. And nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Not just polyurethane like you'd find on a budget guitar. Solid mahogany. Not just some soft easy to carve timber that's not known for good tone. Those "single coils" are also iconic. The P90 is somewhat legendary as single coils go. Aftermarket PUP companies make their own versions of them as they are desirable for their tone. Seymour Duncan, for example, makes 15 different models of "P90" labeled PUP's. These aren't bargain basement hardware.
I have a 2022 model and the Neck Pickup is MUCH LOUDER than the Bridge one. I've lowered it as far as it will go and it's still Louder. Would you know what's going on with that? Thank You.
That's the only complaint I have about any of my Gibsons. All of them, I can see the tooling marks on the fretboard. Other than that, the boards are silky smooth and awesome feeling.
Just got this guitar and Gibson only went and plugged the pickups into the wrong ports on the pcb, so neck was bridge and vice versa. Couldn’t believe it considering both the pickups and pcb are labelled.
@@espltdhor The best way to tell prior to purchase is the serial number - if it starts with 19 - it is the 2018 version. The new ones will have the update serial system of YdddYbPPP instead of the old YYppppppp style that was used from 2014-2018
Nice guitar. I knew a couple dudes who bought those back in late 60s( I think), and they swapped out the tuners for Schallers, which were new and cool back then. Funny how things change, and then back again. Nice review. I want one as soon as I can an extra 1 1/2 grand!
I just bought one in Vintage Burgundy. I think getting a vintage style hard case is a bonus as Gibson doesn't always do that at that price point. Long tenon, P-90s and vintage tuners, but I wish there was one with a true, original style wrap tail instead of the lightning bar.
I had a sg one p90 on the lead pick up.later added a humbucker in the front. I ran it through a super reverb.l have never been able to reproduce the sound of that p90 through the amp.
Love your videos. Been following for quite some time. Of course I dig all of the guitar porn. But my favourite experience here, is watching your guitar skills improve with every video. Keep up the awesome work!

From my understanding - that’s about it. 7-7.5 is the standard for PAF like pickups. Anything more than that will have more bite/attack.

I really like the fact that trogly didn’t use effects pedals so we really heard the guitar literally naked instead of being masked by expensive pedals
simplicity is one of the keys to beauty, and this guitar demonstrastes that. single piece wrap around bridge, p90s, no unnecessary logos or lettering on the headstock, i would add classic tunners to it.
Looks like a winner to me
I know gibson always keep a small gap between the neck tennon and the pocket in case the wood will expand so it doesn't break
Also somewhere for excess glue to go.
That's just a gappy crappy glue joint.
@@jefflitchfield4950 If you look at ESP built SGs even the cheaper Edwards models the neck joint is so tight and beautiful made.Perfect wood construction. The Japanese know how to do it !
This looks nothing like on my SG where the gap is a couple of millimetres till the middle of the joint
Just by watching your video, I went ahead and bought one. Good job sir!
I find it ridiculous how the 2019 Gibson models have the quick connect system, but yet Gibson no longer sells quick connect pickups.
on the gibson website it says they are hand wired with orange drop capacitor?
Mine is hand soldered.
The limited run ones had the PCB job, but the Original Collection ones are back to handwired.
My 2019 sg special same guitar has hand wired electronics
Mine too.
I love Pelham blue. that price is ridiculous, though.

Thank you , so much ! Introduce , wonderful guitar SG, and Your excellent guitar play . I'm Shin'ichiro,Sato(male), from Japan.
Nice demo, you almost rebuilt the guitar. Lol. My first SG Standard it was in 1966 brand new. Loved it!
cool
I remember when I subbed when your videos were guitars on carpet, you went a long way man and ur channel deserves more subbs
06 CS version had pickups mounted directly. No foam or springs.
I had a Gibson SG Deluxe years ago which I traded. Wish I still had it, they are so easy to play!
I love that P-90 sound! Great review!
With this sound I will prefer my Yamaha Pac611hfm. A great guitar anytime, any day and anywhere.
The one I bought the electronics is handwired with Orange Caps. I didn’t look at the pick ups yet but I will check it out.
The best Gibson SG Special you could ever get for its attractive price.
Burgundy is gorgeous. Cars look good in that color too.
thesame body but mini-humbucker version of these is the 2016 sg special T, They have a separate bridge and tailpiece, comes in satin faded finishes, and are also convertible to p90 pickups. Not to mention I believe they are cheaper.
I love how whenever i watch yourvideos, i see the same reverb ad with your listing of the headless SG
they finally made an sg special how it should be made again
I agree, but they need to adjust the price to the model.
@@macaholic100 I agree. This would be a top tier option in the 7-1k price range. It's kind of a illogical for 1500 new.
My 2019 Les Paul Standard was (and is) flawless. It was part of the new run under the new mgmt. Outstanding quality on my piece.
I have one of these guitars from 2019 and mine is all hand wired . 🤯
Yeah...mine is a 2020 and hand wired too...
The guitar is this video is from before the Original Collection - it just looks similar. It's still the 'Henry spec'.
Your SG is the newer, current Original Collection model. The transition happened midway through the 2019 year for some reason.
Veeeery good video!! Congrats mate!
You did play REALLY WELL!!! You were in your element for sure. I want a LP DC in that TV Yellow... And the Tribute stuff is my favourite thing.
Under the bridge pickup it looks like it says 'Peter', I guess he signed it off?
You've missed out the lovely early to mid 70's ones with mini humbuckers harmonica bridges and rectangular fret board markers. I had a 73 one which was ace!
lol at 6.6.7
Angus Young NOT APPROVED!!!
Lol
I know the bridge pickup is right next to the bridge, is it too hard to string?
I don't why, but it reminds me the Frank Zappa's Roxy (excerpt the color).
It started life like that haha
@@Trog Indeed, Troglio.
Slow Ride sounding great brother
Nice one bro, sounds great! I never owned an SG and my wife and I were talking about getting one, between the 2 of us we have just about every other body shape by Gibson, Fender but no SG! Maybe one of these will be it! Thank you for the review bud
Facebook, their market place, type in "gibson sg" and scroll through the selections, I bought an "08" faded for $500. I took it to a music shop and was impressed and pleased to hear the luthier say, "thats one damn nice guitar". Reasearch the selections, and save yourself some money
@@abebabo4315 Cool! Thanks bro!!
@@MikeCindyWhite happy new year to ya
@@abebabo4315 You to bro! Thanks again..... Mike :)
That s what a good SG can do to you Trogly , very nice review!
One question, what are you applying on the guitar neck at 7:18 and why?
Great video, really enjoyed your quality check
@William Gilstrap ahh gotcha thanks for the explanation
Nice editing on that case opening!
Thank you
I think this looks and sounds sweet, nice axe, good demo with the strip down. Thanks Trogly.
just ordered mine ;) much love trogly
What a professional presentation! I've got 3 Gibbys in different wishlists now. This Pelham Blue SG you showed off so well is definitely swinging the pendulum in its favor. I just discovered you, and liked and subscribed. Thank you very much!
Nice looking. I am skeptical of the wrap-around bridge, how do you maintain intonation?
I got a Derek Trucks model, and had to have it refretted, because the frets did not span
the full width of the fret board, which led to frequent slipping off on the high and low E strings.
Now I look for "Fret over Binding".
It's pre-intonated.
That riff at 10:30 is sick, I especially love the vibrato on the 3rd fret, and when he plays it in the middle position it reminds me of Robert Palmer's 'Addicted to love'
ua-cam.com/video/GcCNcgoyG_0/v-deo.html
sounds like "slow ride" by foghat, early 70's. could be wrong though.
Thank you for playing clean, with no effects.
do you know why bridge p90 is not in the correct place?... like old ones or for example the same model in epihone 2020
Thank you for demoing this!!!
where do you get a NOFX pedal?
and why did use use it with this Axe?
It's lovely, really. But 1499 is kinda stupid for this. Wraparound, single coils, silk screened logo. Meh. Its a student model, c'mon Levis. Lol. 799, you got a deal tho.
Seriously. It's a beautiful guitar, but Gibson cut a lot of corners here. Definitely not worth $1500.
I don't think so when you consider a fender at this price point - it's a knock out! Why spend 1500 hundred on Fender USA - when most of the times nowadays the Mexi's at 600 to 900 are about the same. Epiphone is a bad alternative - IMO of course
$650 with a gig bag, no strap, truss wrench.
Or even 888 but not 666 but if it was 666 i,d buy it and tell the wife a friend gave it to me.
The Gibson site says that the wiring is like this " 2 Volumes, 2 Tones & Toggle Switch (Hand-wired with Orange Drop Capacitors) "

This one is a 2018 "2019 Model" before the specs were changed

-1 for the PCB card that holds the pots and the input jack. Do you need to change the PCB card if you want to replace any of the pots?
Looks like Gibson is on the RIGHT TRACK!!! FINALLY.........KEEP EM COMING LIKE THIS GIBSON! 🎸💚
Eternal Me what charging 1500 for a 500 dollar instrument yeah their really going to smash it with the idiots that don't know better
Nice guitar. I knew a couple dudes who bought those back in late 60s( I think), and they swapped out the tuners for Schallers, which were new and cool back then. Funny how things change, and then back again. Nice review. I want one as soon as I can an extra 1 1/2 grand!
It is not 'blue-coloured' - but grey - Rebel Grey, to be exact. But, yes, the secondary colour is blue, behind the grey.
I just bought one in Vintage Burgundy. I think getting a vintage style hard case is a bonus as Gibson doesn't always do that at that price point. Long tenon, P-90s and vintage tuners, but I wish there was one with a true, original style wrap tail instead of the lightning bar.
Great effect with the angels singing to the unveiling.
I had a sg one p90 on the lead pick up.later added a humbucker in the front. I ran it through a super reverb.l have never been able to reproduce the sound of that p90 through the amp.
Mine also doesn't have the textured plastic covers either?
Love your videos. Been following for quite some time. Of course I dig all of the guitar porn. But my favourite experience here, is watching your guitar skills improve with every video. Keep up the awesome work!
Just bought a 2021 version of one of these in vintage cherry. What are the pickup dimensions on these? I’m planning on getting different pickup covers for mine and am having trouble finding the right size.
