  • In this episode, as part of the Bush Edge Homesteading Australia Canning Basics Series, I share how we use a waterbath canner to preserve for shelf stable foods.
Did you know that any big pot in your kitchen that meets some basic criteria can be used as a waterbath canner? Waterbath canning is a great way start getting into canning to preserve your own produce and foods (high acid foods only).
I hope this video helps you build up your knowledge of how to do waterbath canning.
Do keep in mind that this video shares how we use the canner and things I have learned over the years. But you are responsible for your own safety and developing a full understanding of how to can safely and use your canning equipment safely.

Love watching a great and informative video without hearing an American accent! If I hear 'and then you're going to' or 'you're going to want to' I am going to scream!

Another well explained video, brings back memories from nearly 50 years ago helping my parents cutting up the fruit from our trees for the Fowlers Vacola, if only we still had it, the complete system with around 60 jars was sold off nearly 10 years ago, but I do have enough hobbies.

So nice to have found you. I follow a lot of US homesteaders but it’s nice to find an Aussie who preserves. I haven’t canned as yet, mainly fermenting and oil preserving but am keen to start some canning so these videos are wonderful. Thank you

    Another great video.
I actually found an old trivet at the op shop for 0.50 and when I took it to the counter they had another Larger one that had just come in I got them both for $1. Keep an eye out.

Another hack for your tea towel trivet is to use spare jar rings on the bottom of your pot as a trivet..great video btw..loving this series.

Since mason jars are so expensive and I am late to the game, can the canning lids and rings fit recycled glass jars from pasta sauce etc.
Nice to watch an Aussie canning

Thanks Patricia 😀 Im not sure if you saw the 1st episode of this series which runs through a bunch of options for jars. All the ones covered can be used for waterbath.
There are normally 1 peice lug style lids for the recycled jars, which are different to the 2 peice mason ones in this vid. It is such a bugger that mason has got expensive and harder to find.
