As a college freshman in engineering, can confirm: a plastic hanger will *definitely* hold up an entire bed and the human on top of it with frequent use for long hours at a time *just like* a metal pin. I'm definitely not questioning how still he had to be up there to not shatter that whole hanger like a prehistoric femur.

To be quite fair, compression and torsion strength are completely different. It's the same reason concrete seems hard like a rock but collapses when there's too much strain pulling it apart. I'm no expert though, it's possible that the reason it held is different, but I'd guess it gives when cut, since it's soft, but being flexible and having the support of 3 other rods it was resistant to it sliding off and snapping (since the hole wouldn't be hard or sharp enough to cut it). I wouldn't bet on it lasting any longer than 2 years though, but still.
@@lucianoariasduval We know that the plastic is soft because they cut it. Imagine what would happen if the upper bed tilted a little. The weight would cause the plastic to bend and snap. There is a reason it's supposed to be metal.
@@dorarandom7870 I don't think you quite got what I meant. The fact we are 100% sure about is that, against better judgment, they used the coat hanger and it somehow held the whole year. What I'm arguing is not whether or not it was smart to do, but rather figure out how it managed to survive. Concrete, while resistant to compression, is brittle and and not very tough when pulled apart from different points. If they had filled the hole with concrete, it would've tilted over 100%. So why did the plastic hold? Iron and derivatives are both resistant to compression and also flexible (not brittle), which is why metal rods are a prime choice for support. What I figured is that while plastic bends easily, it's likely that its flexibility means that it resists the force of the bed sliding off. Flexible plastic is easy to bend sideways, but very hard to snap. Imagine if you couldn't strain the plastic's integrity by bending it and you just had to snap it in half by pulling with one hand and pushing with the other. Being incased in wood it wouldn't actually bend, it just slides, so maybe as long as you don't push it too much, it can hold your weight going up and down the bed. It's still mostly just a theory based on vague understanding of how these materials work. I'm no engineer, I'm a biology student and I have to study organic chemistry even if it's not my thing, those are my qualifications lol.
@@lucianoariasduval I'm also not even close to begin an engineer but your idea seems pretty solid. It's also not just the materials that kept the beds from being unstable but the beds themselves. It's hard to explain but if the beds started to tilt, the plastic wouldn't bend far enough to actually snap because the beds are in each other's way. The pressure that would have to be applied would have to be strong enough to damage the bed itself. To stay stacked on each other is actually a preferable position for the beds regarding gravity. The plastic was mainly just there to keep the upper bed in place. It's not that plastic is that durable, the position in which it wouldn't be is just less likely to happen. Still, pretty dangerous.

Listen. As someone who currently goes to a university whose primary focus is engineering I can tell you. This is EXACTLY how engineers and engineering students behave.
Everyone gangsta until Mark drops an hour long animated bob's fridge
I sent this the my RA at my seasonal job to have a maintenance guy come bunk the beds, because originally I was in my room with one bed alone, then they brought another person and bed to my room and put it in front of my dresser so I couldn't really access my clothes for a week and a half. I was so close to doing it myself, but my RA thought it was funny and we got a maintenance person to help.
I adore that Mark and his oldest friends are still close. Keeps his roots
3:10 wade as a herm made me laugh
?
wajajss same haha
@@mattybrunolucaszeneresalas9072 a herm is a stone pillar base thing with the sculpture of a persons head ontop (most commonly hermes hence the name!)
they drew wade like that since it was discussed in one of the distractsble episodes which this audio is from .)!
@@thatoneshepherd but why
@@mattybrunolucaszeneresalas9072 as a call back i guess :)!
3:35 the bed dynamaxed
0:28 the movie they were referring to was Step Brothers (“there’s so much room for activities”) but I guess Lego Movie also works
It was step brothers, but wade is bald
Thanks man
I don’t get it
This animator is so inspired, I love their visual gags. Also something about this gag is just hilarious 1:40
3:13 God, I remember Art Attack.
I feel like all their conversations should be animated exactly like this.
I love the way Bob pronounces “cloTHes” with such consistently over exaggerated annunciation
This KILLED me when I listened to it on the podcast but these animated shorts are amazing. Reliving all my favorite stories 😂
Everyone can build a bed that stands, it takes an engineer to build a bed that barely stands.
The entire podcast had me on edge for about 15 minutes afterwards. Jokes aside, go listen to Distractable. Distractable is fucking hilarious. Distractable is the kind of stuff that goes through your brain in an instant, but spread into an actual topic. If you choose not to listen to Distractable, you're choosing to ignore the voices in your head. And I thought the Edge of Sleep was a good podcast... Holy shit we as humanity have a lot to discover. More episodes of Distractable I mean.
What the fuck are you doing still reading this comment? Go listen to Distractable or I'll stealthily swap your femurs for pieces of plastic clothes-hangers and they'll snap due to the sheer amount of weight and guilt on your shoulders for not listening to Distractable.
i ove this comment
This sounds like Mark wrote it
The fact that at this point Mark was still planning on becoming an engineer makes this story like. 10x better
The “foot” of room was so clever. It made me laugh 😂
2:32 And i thought why Mark was dropped out of college.
The "that's fine, thats fine, I'll sleep up high" was SUCH a good impression lmao
Your consistency and quality of content never disappoints!
Okay
Cool
Lmao
Yet again, what a generic compliment to say to a Ytuber that's been active for almost 10 years. Is this also a bot?
@@missachua It's very likely. A lot of bot accounts get botted themselves, probably due to how moronically-similar their bot scripts are in timing.
I just love how vulnerable Mark is with Bob and Wade hahah they seem like a great group of guy buds
Mark is drunk and Bob is high in this stories or both of them had already lost their sanity
This is such a stepbrothers scenario.
This is what I love about these three's friendship. They go wayyyy back. You don't see stuff like that blossom strong everyday..m
And this is why we love mark. He is dumb just like the rest of us. A man after my own heart ❤️.
Dissension reference? 0:03
Dis-what? Is this a play-through I missed or something? 😂 (I’m incredibly picky with what I watch so there are a lot of things I haven’t even heard of).
@@bluepurraidk why but I just put this comment
"But if you leave it like that and our it on top of another bed, there's like maybe a FOOT between the bed and the ceiling." Is definetely the best part of this 😂.
1:05 Me and my brother once upon a time in a single wide house.
I’m in a dorm with those beds. The bed is basically a metal frame, you put a mattress in top, with four metal triangles that you pin into four wooden legs that you can adjust. Whenever someone moves in and wants to adjust it you can hear the RA going crazy with a mallet.
2:08 How Mark almost became an engineer
I’m laughing so hard at this. Especially at the part where mark scrambles up to his bunk.
It's crazy how it was only a toddler when this took place I don't know why that suddenly just got into my mind
I love how this animator uses all the computer actions to their advantage and makes hilarious little jokes of their own in-between like the Lego Wade losing his hair 😂😂😂😂
This is my favourite episode of all time I’m so glad this was animated
What is the name of the episode?
@@lilliebixler1776 Hold My Beer Moments
I love that Mark and Bob a) met in college and b) share the same singular braincell sometimes. 😂
