As a college freshman in engineering, can confirm: a plastic hanger will *definitely* hold up an entire bed and the human on top of it with frequent use for long hours at a time *just like* a metal pin. I'm definitely not questioning how still he had to be up there to not shatter that whole hanger like a prehistoric femur.
By far the best thing about Mark and Bob’s relationship is how Mark keeps messing around when Bob is saying something serious which makes the two comedy gold.
Being employed as an engineer for 10 years, and having a Bachelors in mechanical engineering, most of the commentary makes me believe most people don't know any engineers. This sounds exactly like an engineer.

Broken ribs. Maybe? Head concussion. Also likely. Death? Cannot be discarded. Unless those beds aren't as heavy as I thought.
Everyone who's watching this, PLEASE go listen to the rest of the college stories they talked about. Honestly one of my favorite podcast episodes to date, it's SO hilarious
I love how they instantly started feeding off of each other's chaotic energy, and the fact Bob was able to perfectly quote Mark so well to the point I had no hesitation in believing this was an exact quote and how things went down speaks volumes on how close they are and how well they know each other.
One of my best friends is an engineer. Two of my roommates last year were in engineering. When I hear people talk and joke about engineers, I can tell they've never met one. This... sounds EXACTLY like an engineer. To do something bizarre but technically functional.
I really appreciate how Mark has always 1000% been the Mark we know and love, even in his college years. This entire story has Mark shenanigans written all over it. And every single thing that Bob described Mark doing or saying made me think "Yep.... that sounds about right."
When I look back on it, I think Mark just mellowed out a LOT. Like, he still has the same goofy ideas from over 10 years ago, he's just older and a little calmer.
Mark : "I could've been an Engineer !" [2:04] Also Mark : _(sees no problems with substituting an assembly bunk bed's factory grade metal pins with an improvised rod from a plastic clothes hanger he found in his college closet)_
Imagine Mark as a legit engineer building a complete legit bridge and then doesn’t have the right part and is like “YOU KNOW WHAT WORKED IN COLLEGE” And then somewhere in the world there’s a bridge that relies a bit on a plastic clothes hanger.
@@Plusle843 I was saying that your suggestion also worked with the joke that Mark would use unstable materials for engineer stuff. Didn’t mean to offend I guess.
@@IDrawSometimes__525 No offence, it just didn't work. How do you imagine a piece of ruler to work in any sort of big construction? Nevermind that clotheshanger didn't even carry any weight(except for one), it was actually about stabilising, keeping the legs of beds centered.
To be fair, he slept on a bed held up by a plastic clotheshanger for the rest of his school year. Like sure it wasn't built to last, but it fucking worked for as long as it needed to.
I remember that I and my older brother had our own separate bedframes, but when moving out of my grandmother's house to my mother's own house me, my older brother and younger brother all shared a room. So, to make more space, my mother opted to bunk my bed and my older brother's bed. This was a simple enough operation, they were the same design, big thicc wood legs going up to a halfass headboard that ended up forming a ladder pretty naturally. I was all for it, and kinda excited to see if I got the top bunk. Went up to my mother all like "DO I HAVE TOP BUNK????" And she was like "yeah, whatever." and I'm like "YEAAAH!" and climbed up that bed up to the top bunk... and wait a minute... that was my older brother's plushies. And his blanket. And pillowcase, and sheets... and... you know what? Forget it, just gonna take it all off and get my stuff up from the lower bunk. BECAUSE THE TOP BUNK IS MINE DAMN IT! I did keep that top bunk.
These three just have such an energy, Bob's willingness to go along with Mark's ideas. When Bob just says "Perfect. How big do you think they need to be?" I died. Seriously. Same with the parkour story. He never saw a doctor for his horrendous injuries, either. I am constantly amazed that he's not either dead or dealing with chronic pain/disability. I'm terrified for the day his unbelievable luck runs out.
To be fair, with how small the pieces would have been, there likely would've been enough tensile strength to keep all of them from snapping or shearing, except maybe that extra long piece.

I feel like I not only need to give credit to the animators for adding an Art Attack reference, but I feel like I need to give them an award... *I can't attach an opaque PNG of a trophy here though, so I'll trust them to get it off Google images*
To be quite fair, compression and torsion strength are completely different. It's the same reason concrete seems hard like a rock but collapses when there's too much strain pulling it apart. I'm no expert though, it's possible that the reason it held is different, but I'd guess it gives when cut, since it's soft, but being flexible and having the support of 3 other rods it was resistant to it sliding off and snapping (since the hole wouldn't be hard or sharp enough to cut it). I wouldn't bet on it lasting any longer than 2 years though, but still.
@@lucianoariasduval We know that the plastic is soft because they cut it. Imagine what would happen if the upper bed tilted a little. The weight would cause the plastic to bend and snap. There is a reason it's supposed to be metal.
@@dorarandom7870 I don't think you quite got what I meant. The fact we are 100% sure about is that, against better judgment, they used the coat hanger and it somehow held the whole year. What I'm arguing is not whether or not it was smart to do, but rather figure out how it managed to survive. Concrete, while resistant to compression, is brittle and and not very tough when pulled apart from different points. If they had filled the hole with concrete, it would've tilted over 100%. So why did the plastic hold? Iron and derivatives are both resistant to compression and also flexible (not brittle), which is why metal rods are a prime choice for support. What I figured is that while plastic bends easily, it's likely that its flexibility means that it resists the force of the bed sliding off. Flexible plastic is easy to bend sideways, but very hard to snap. Imagine if you couldn't strain the plastic's integrity by bending it and you just had to snap it in half by pulling with one hand and pushing with the other. Being incased in wood it wouldn't actually bend, it just slides, so maybe as long as you don't push it too much, it can hold your weight going up and down the bed. It's still mostly just a theory based on vague understanding of how these materials work. I'm no engineer, I'm a biology student and I have to study organic chemistry even if it's not my thing, those are my qualifications lol.
@@lucianoariasduval I'm also not even close to begin an engineer but your idea seems pretty solid. It's also not just the materials that kept the beds from being unstable but the beds themselves. It's hard to explain but if the beds started to tilt, the plastic wouldn't bend far enough to actually snap because the beds are in each other's way. The pressure that would have to be applied would have to be strong enough to damage the bed itself. To stay stacked on each other is actually a preferable position for the beds regarding gravity. The plastic was mainly just there to keep the upper bed in place. It's not that plastic is that durable, the position in which it wouldn't be is just less likely to happen. Still, pretty dangerous.
If you listen to this episode, Mark explains the time where he fell off the bed and nearly knocked over their tv, dressers and shit, and how Bob didn't even MOVE or CARE lol

Being employed as an engineer for 10 years, and having a Bachelors in mechanical engineering, most of the commentary makes me believe most people don't know any engineers. This sounds exactly like an engineer.
Mabey I'm just born an engineer or something cause I thought this was the normal logical solution that he did 😂 cause I have replaced plastic pins on something with metal from cut up sewing needles (the pegs that hold the kickstand in my tablet broke) I heated the ends up and stook them in the spot where the pegs were and it's stronger than before but the point is I just immediately was able to come up with that which I find really confusing like where did it come from how did I know to do that ????
I know right! Everyone here's all haha-dumb-plastic can't replace metal! ... But there was never any problem; It worked as per required for the entire duration!

This was a simple enough operation, they were the same design, big thicc wood legs going up to a halfass headboard that ended up forming a ladder pretty naturally. I am soooo glad someone animated this. This is perfect.
They cut the clothing hangers with *scissors* and didn't question the durability.
Seems about right.
I'm more surprised that it worked lol
